Book Biology and Geology of Coral Reefs V1

Download or read book Biology and Geology of Coral Reefs V1 written by Owen Arthur Jones and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biology and Geology of Coral Reefs, Volume I: Geology 1 focuses on the evolution, reef types, geology, and structural and tectonic factors causing the development of coral reefs. The selection first offers information on the coral reefs of the Caribbean and Indian Ocean, including evolution, physical environment, coral diversity, reef communities, reef types and zonation, and reef morphology and sea-level change. The manuscript then takes a look at the Bikini and Eniwetok Atolls in Marshall Islands; geomorphology and geology of coral reefs in French Polynesia; and the coral reefs of New Caledonia. The publication examines the coral reefs of the New Guinea region and waters of the Great Barrier Reef province. Topics include climate, seasonal variations in temperature and salinity, and water masses in the Coral Sea and their effect on the Great Barrier Reef. The book also ponders on the geomorphology of Eastern Queensland in relation to the Great Barrier Reef; structural and tectonic factors influencing the development of coral reefs off Northeastern Queensland; and sediments of the Great Barrier Reef province. The selection is a vital source of information for marine biologists and readers interested in the geology, evolution, physical environment, and diversity of coral reefs.

Book Earth and Life Processes Discovered from Subseafloor Environments

Download or read book Earth and Life Processes Discovered from Subseafloor Environments written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-12-03 with total page 829 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP: 2000-2013) has provided crucial records of past and present processes and interactions within and between the biosphere, cryosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and geosphere. Research in IODP encompasses a wide range of fundamental and applied issues that affect society, such as global climate change, biodiversity, the origin of life, natural hazards involving the study of earthquakes processes, and the internal structure and dynamics of our planet. This compilation of major findings from the 2003-2013/14 phase of IODP, focusing on scientific results rather than description of data acquisition and early inferences, provides invaluable information. Anyone wondering what scientific drilling can achieve will gain quick understanding of the range of questions that are uniquely addressed with this methodology and the ways these data dovetail with other regional information. The excitement of breakthrough findings that occasionally accompanies a drilling project will be evident. IODP obtained unique records from the global ocean basins during the 2003-2013 program phase. This book highlights findings in three theme areas: Subseafloor life and the marine biosphere; Earth's changing environments; and Dynamics of the solid Earth. Each core or borehole log provides a window revealing insights that no other data achieve. - Presents syntheses of key results from the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program - Encompasses a wide range of issues that affect society - Describes the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program and its expeditions

Book Alkaline Rocks and Carbonatites of the World Part 4

Download or read book Alkaline Rocks and Carbonatites of the World Part 4 written by A.R. Woolley and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2019-09-02 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The alkaline igneous rocks and carbonatites are compositionally and mineralogically the most diverse of all igneous rocks and, apart from their scientific interest, are of major, and growing, economic importance. They are important repositories of certain metals and commodities, indeed the only significant sources of some of them, and include Nb, the rare earths, Cu, V, diamond, phosphate, vermiculite, bauxite, raw materials for the manufacture of ceramics, and potentially Th and U. The economic potential of these rocks is now widely appreciated, particularly since the commencement of the mining of the Palabora carbonatite for copper and a host of valuable by-products. Similarly, the crucial economic dominance of rare earth production from carbonatite-related occurrences in China, has stimulated the world-wide hunt for similar deposits. This volume describes and provides ready access to the literature for all known occurrences of alkaline igneous rocks and carbonatites of Antarctica, Asia and Europe excluding the former USSR, Australasia and oceanic islands. More than 1,200 occurrences from 59 countries are outlined together with those of 57 oceanic islands and island groups. The descriptions include geographical coordinates and information on general geology, rock types, petrography, mineralogy, age and economic aspects with the principal references cited. There are 429 geological and distribution maps and a locality index. As has been demonstrated by the three earlier volumes, the present book is likely to be of considerable interest to mineral exploration companies, as there are no comprehensive published reviews of the economic aspects of the alkaline rocks. It will also interest research scientists in the fields of igneous petrology and volcanology, and geologists concerned with the regional distribution of igneous rocks and their geodynamic relationships.

Download or read book Defining the Pacific written by Fred Spier and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume lays the physical and conceptual groundwork for the Pacific World series, exploring both the constraints imposed and the opportunities offered to humanity by the physical environment of the Pacific region. Organized from the perspectives of "Big History" and macro-geography, the volume presents a series of major studies and surveys by authors from a range of disciplines. It opens with perspectives on the ocean, and closes with questions of human settlement, diffusion, and trans-Pacific contacts. Geologists write of the origins of the Pacific, its geological structure, and the problem of tsunamis; climatologists and oceanographers discuss the El Niño Southern Oscillation and the ocean waters; biologists and biogeographers find patterns in the life of the Basin - as is shown, all these have their impact on the potential of the region for human use and settlement. Finally, geographers, anthropologists, and archaeologists deal with the peopling of the Pacific islands, the settlement of the Americas, and the incidence and importance of pre-modern links across the Pacific.
