Book Geological and Topographical Maps Their Interpretation and Use

Download or read book Geological and Topographical Maps Their Interpretation and Use written by Arthur R. Dwerryhouse and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geological and Topographical Maps Their Interpretation and Use: A Handbook for the Geologist, and Civil Engineer Having frequently been asked by my students and others for a text-book dealing with the practical problems which are involved in the interpretation of maps, both geological and topographical, I have endeavoured in the following pages to give such descriptions and instructions as will enable the civil engineer and the student of geology to draw sections of the country depicted upon maps, and to ascertain the depth and thickness of the various strata of which it is built up, and their relations to the surface of the ground and to each other. The importance of a correct solution of this type of problem to the civil engineer, and to all others engaged in work which involves the making of excavations, need not be enlarged upon, and it is hoped that the present volume will be a help to them and to teachers and students of geology and geography. It has been thought desirable to include a brief summary of the main structural features of rocks for the benefit of those readers who have been unable to obtain a systematic course of instruction in geology; but it is not intended that this should replace the fuller accounts to be found in the text-books of Physical Geology. The examples given in the illustrations have been, as far as possible, based upon actual districts in the British Isles, but occasionally it has been necessary to simplify these to some extent for the sake of clearness. In conclusion, I cannot too warmly express my thanks to Professor P. F. Kendall, under whose guidance I acquired my first knowledge of structural geology, and to whom therefore many of the ideas expressed in the present volume are due. Book Geology and Plant Life

    Book Details:
  • Author : Arthur R. Kruckeberg
  • Publisher : University of Washington Press
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN : 9780295984520
  • Pages : 378 pages

Download or read book Geology and Plant Life written by Arthur R. Kruckeberg and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before any other influences began to fashion life and its lavish diversity, geological events created the initial environments--both physical and chemical--for the evolutionary drama that followed. Drawing on case histories from around the world, Arthur Kruckeberg demonstrates the role of landforms and rock types in producing the unique geographical distributions of plants and in stimulating evolutionary diversification. His examples range throughout the rich and heterogeneous tapestry of the earth's surface: the dramatic variations of mountainous topography, the undulating ground and crevices of level limestone karst, and the subtle realm of sand dunes. He describes the ongoing evolutionary consequences of the geology-plant interface and the often underestimated role of geology in shaping climate. Kruckeberg explores the fundamental connection between plants and geology, including the historical roots of geobotany, the reciprocal relations between geology and other environmental influences, geomorphology and its connection with plant life, lithology as a potent selective agent for plants, and the physical and biological influences of soils. Special emphasis is given to the responses of plants to exceptional rock types and their soils--serpentines, limestones, and other azonal (exceptional) substrates. Edaphic ecology, especially of serpentines, has been his specialty for years. Kruckeberg's research fills a significant gap in the field of environmental science by connecting the conventionally separated disciplines of the physical and biological sciences. Geology and Plant Life is the result of more than forty years of research into the question of why certain plants grow on certain soils and certain terrain structures, and what happens when this relationship is disrupted by human agents. It will be useful to a wide spectrum of professionals in the natural sciences: plant ecologists, paleobiologists, climatologists, soil scientists, geologists, geographers, and conservation scientists, as well as serious amateurs in natural history.

Book Military Geology and Topography

Download or read book Military Geology and Topography written by Herbert E. Gregory and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Military Geology and Topography: A Presentation of Certain Phases of Geology, Geography and Topography for Military Purposes In addition to those furnished by the - authors many illustrations have been supplied by the Director of the United States Geological Survey. Electrotypes for nineteen illustrations appearing in Geology, by Chamberlin and Salisbury, and Physiography, by Salisbury, have been provided by Henry Holt and Company. John Wiley and Sons has given permission to use one illustration from Engineering Geology, by Ries and Watson, and the Harvard University Press has furnished an electrotype of one illustration from Handbook of Northern France, by William Morris Davis. The task assumed by the authors has been a difficult one, for the relation of geology to military activities is unfamiliar to American stu dents, and the time available for the preparation of the text has been very brief. The aim has been to focus attention on those facts and principles that have proven to be applicable to military problems on the assumption that the teacher will develop the topics briefly treated and will supplement the descriptions in the text with models, maps, and lantern views. The book is the result of a preliminary effort, and its authors hope that it will be a nucleus about which will gather material for a more complete volume; it will have served its purpose if it increases the efficiency of the American Army even to a small degree; Teachers and other readers will aid in the preparation of an improved second edition by calling attention to errors, by suggesting emendations, and by furnishing general criticisms. Communications may be addressed to Professor Herbert E. Gregory, Yale University, New Haven, Conn. National Research Council, Division of Geology and Geography, September 10, 1918. Book Understanding Geology Through Maps

Download or read book Understanding Geology Through Maps written by Graham Borradaile and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Geology through Maps guides young professional geologists and students alike in understanding and interpreting the world’s dynamic and varying geological landscapes through the liberal use of visual aids including figures, maps, and diagrams. This highly visual reference introduces the skills of interpreting a geological map and relating it to the morphology of the most important types of geological structure. Thoroughly revised, and with more international examples, it is ideal for use by students with a minimum of tutorial supervision. Maps of geological structures provide all of the realism of a survey map without the huge amount of data often present, so readers can develop or hone their skills without becoming overwhelmed or confused. In particular, emphasis is placed throughout on developing the skill of three-dimensional visualization so important to geologists. Authored by a master geologist with more than 40 years of experience in research and instruction Features more than 130 figures, diagrams, and illustrations—many in full color—to highlight major themes and aid in the retention of key concepts Leads to a broad understanding of Earth’s geology through the use of real and theoretical map Exercises conclude each chapter, making it an ideal tool for self-guided and quick study
