Book Geology for Engineers and Environmental Scientists

Download or read book Geology for Engineers and Environmental Scientists written by Alan E. Kehew and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2021-12-29 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth edition of Geology for Engineers and Environmental Scientists provides students with a basic foundation in the principles of geology, along with an illustration of how engineers must design and build their projects with natural geologic materials and protect them from potentially hazardous geologic processes. Kehew introduces engineering topics including soil and rock mechanics with a quantitative approach that will give students a head start in more advanced engineering courses. The book is prefaced with a discussion of engineering and environmental challenges that our society must face in the current century, such as population growth, scarcity of water and mineral resources, transition to renewable energy, and effects of climate change. Numerous examples of engineering and environmental applications ranging from short descriptions to extensive case histories, such as the “Big Dig” in Boston to the effects of Hurricane Katrina and reconstruction afterward, are included in every chapter. A full chapter is devoted to subsurface contamination and cleanup technologies. For the first time, a large color insert will highlight geological features in the field.

Book Quaternary of South West England

Download or read book Quaternary of South West England written by S. Campbell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: STRUCTURE OF THE VOLUME AND TERMINOLOGY USED This book contains scientific descriptions of 63 localities (Figure A) of at least national importance for Quaternary geology, geomorphology and environmental change in South-West England. These sites were selected by the Geological Conservation Review and are accordingly designated 'GCR' sites. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the Quaternary. Chapter 2 synthesizes the geomorphological development and Quaternary history of the region, and outlines the principles involved in site selection. The individual GCR site descriptions form the core of the book. In the following chapters, sites are arranged and described in broad geographic areas and by research topic. This is necessitated by the widely disparate nature of the field evidence in Soutb West England: sites demonstrating the full range of Quaternary and geomorphological features are not evenly and conveniently dispersed throughout the region, and some areas have significant gaps. Neither do the individual chapters contain sites that neces sarily equate with particular site selection networks. Rather, the chosen chapter headings provide the least repetitive means of describing the sites and background material. Where possible, a chronological approach, from oldest to youngest, has been used to describe sites within a given chapter. Again, this approach is not always possi ble, and a group of sites may show variations on landform or Stratigraphie evidence broadly within one major time interval or chronostratigraphic stage; inevitably there are many overlaps.

Book Trace Metals in the Environment and Living Organisms

Download or read book Trace Metals in the Environment and Living Organisms written by Philip S. Rainbow and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-23 with total page 767 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trace metals play key roles in life - all are toxic above a threshold bioavailability, yet many are essential to metabolism at lower doses. It is important to appreciate the natural history of an organism in order to understand the interaction between its biology and trace metals. The countryside and indeed the natural history of the British Isles are littered with the effects of metals, mostly via historical mining and subsequent industrial development. This fascinating story encompasses history, economics, geography, geology, chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, ecology, ecotoxicology and above all natural history. Examples abound of interactions between organisms and metals in the terrestrial, freshwater, estuarine, coastal and oceanic environments in and around the British Isles. Many of these interactions have nothing to do with metal pollution. All organisms are affected from bacteria, plants and invertebrates to charismatic species such as seals, dolphins, whales and seabirds. All have a tale to tell.

Book High Dartmoor Land and People

Download or read book High Dartmoor Land and People written by Eric Hemery and published by Robert Hale. This book was released on 1983 with total page 1096 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book about England's last great wilderness, as it is often called, is a systematic topographical and historical survey of Dartmoor by watersheds, and the first to deal comprehensively with the region since the celebrated guide of 1908 by William Crossing. Every river country has its map showing courses and names of even the smallest tributary streams. Authentic place-names are featured in the book, their origin in usage and tradition being traced back wherever possible. High Dartmoor traces the formation of the great granite upland from its inception as molten magma to the heather-cloaked moorland we know today, on which the first settlers built their homes and monuments nearly four thousand years ago. Something of the mystery, enigma and drama of this vast and remarkable moorland, and certainly its atmosphere, sound an echo in these pages, and the lives of the moormen and their families over several centuries are described in detail. explanation is given of every type of feature described in the text, and the illustrated note on the physical pattern of the valleys, which makes clear that, far from being an expanse of moorland conceived in a haphazard fit by nature, Dartmoor is possessed of a physical symmetry. Never before has the Moor been meticulously recorded in word and picture. High Dartmoor will remain for a long time to come the definitive work on the subject.
