Book A Geology for Engineers

Download or read book A Geology for Engineers written by F.G.H. Blyth and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No engineering structure can be built on the ground or within it without the influence of geology being experienced by the engineer. Yet geology is an ancillary subject to students of engineering and it is therefore essential that their training is supported by a concise, reliable and usable text on geology and its relationship to engineering. In this book all the fundamental aspects of geology are described and explained, but within the limits thought suitable for engineers. It describes the structure of the earth and the operation of its internal processes, together with the geological processes that shape the earth and produce its rocks and soils. It also details the commonly occurring types of rock and soil, and many types of geological structure and geological maps. Care has been taken to focus on the relationship between geology and geomechanics, so emphasis has been placed on the geological processes that bear directly upon the composition, structure and mechanics of soil and rocks, and on the movement of groundwater. The descriptions of geological processes and their products are used as the basis for explaining why it is important to investigate the ground, and to show how the investigations may be conducted at ground level and underground. Specific instruction is provided on the relationship between geology and many common activities undertaken when engineering in rock and soil.

Book Engineering in Rocks for Slopes Foundations and Tunnels

Download or read book Engineering in Rocks for Slopes Foundations and Tunnels written by T. Ramamurthy and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2010-08 with total page 762 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the ever-increasing developmental activities as diverse as the construction of dams, roads, tunnels, underground powerhouses and storage facilities, petroleum exploration and nuclear repositories, a more comprehensive and updated understanding of rock mass is essential for civil engineers, engineering geologists, geophysicists, and petroleum and mining engineers. Though some contents of this vast subject are included in undergraduate curriculum, there are full-fledged courses on Rock Mechanics/Rock Engineer-ing in postgraduate programmes in civil engineering and mining engineering. Much of the material presented in this book is also taught to geology and geophysics students. In addition, the book is suitable for short courses conducted for teachers, practising engineers and engineering geologists. This book, with contributions from a number of authors with expertise and vast experience in various areas of rock engineering, gives an in-depth analysis of the multidimensional aspects of the subject. The text covers a wide range of topics related to engineering behaviour of rocks and rock masses, their classifications, interpretation of geological mapping of joints through stereographic projection, in situ stress measurements, laboratory and field tests, stability of rock slopes, foundations of structures, including dams and support systems for underground excavations. The Second Edition has been enriched with new topics such as minimum overburden on pressure tunnels, pressure around vertical cylindrical shaft, thickness of steel lining, and penetration rate from joint factor. What distinguishes the text is the application of numerical methods to solve various problems by discrete element and equivalent material concepts, interpretations of geomechanics modelling test data, excavation methods, ground improving methods, and use of roadheaders and TBMs. The book provides an excellent understanding of how to solve problems in rock engineering and should immensely benefit students, teachers, professionals and designers alike.

Book Dissenting Spirit

Download or read book Dissenting Spirit written by Peadar McArdle and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Weaver was an accomplished Irish engineer and geologist who found success at a young age in the early nineteenth century. Known as a strict if considerate manager of mines in Ireland, he also participated in suppressing the 1798 Rebellion in Wicklow. He carried out geological mapping in Ireland, Mexico, Great Britain and North America. His story sheds light on industrial and social conditions in pre-Famine Ireland and elsewhere, as geology was coming of age as a scientific discipline. Weaver, like many people today, took issue with emerging new mindsets, and he was eventually marginalized. This book will appeal to those interested in the science and industry of the early nineteenth century, and to students of the philosophy and history of science.

Book SME Mining Engineering Handbook Third Edition

Book Developments in Engineering Geology

Download or read book Developments in Engineering Geology written by M.J. Eggers and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in Engineering Geology is a showcase of the diversity in the science and practice of engineering geology. All branches of geology are applicable to solving engineering problems and this presents a wide frontier of scientific opportunity to engineering geology. In practice, diversity represents a different set of challenges with the distinctive character of the profession derived from the crossover between the disciplines of geology and engineering. This book emphasizes the importance of understanding the geological science behind the engineering behaviour of a soil or rock. It also highlights a continuing expansion in the practice areas of engineering geology and illustrates how this is opening new frontiers to the profession thereby introducing new knowledge and technology across a range of applications. This is initiating an evolution in the way geology is modelled in engineering, geohazard and environmental studies in modern and traditional areas of engineering geology.
