Book Geological Records of the Fuegian Andes Deformed Complex Framed in a Patagonian Orogenic Belt Regional Context

Download or read book Geological Records of the Fuegian Andes Deformed Complex Framed in a Patagonian Orogenic Belt Regional Context written by Rogelio Daniel Acevedo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the Fuegian Andes in Argentina, showing both simple and complex aspects. The first ones refer to the general stratigraphy of the area and the latter result from their tectonic characteristics. Concerning the stratigraphy, an appraisal of the denomination and valorization of formations of Jurassic and early Cretaceous age is performed here to reach the simple scheme of the Fuegian-Patagonian continuity under the name of “Fuegian Andes Deformed Complex”. As an essay the formational nomenclature is simplified and the local concept of basement is evaluated. In relation to their structural aspects it is assumed that the formation of the orogenic Fuegian arc and the folding of the Mesozoic and early Tertiary layers are connected phenomena. Tectonic forces from the West, the Northeast and the South have had participation in the formation of the tectonic arc. The lithostatic column pressure was added once the layers were folded and thrusted upwards during the birth of the Fuegian Andes. Even the speculation of a great main fold overturned to North, as an abstraction, is considered. Instead, the Magallanes-Fagnano fault is appreciated only as a product of the transcurrent Quaternary movements, lacking associated eruptive processes that contribute to define plate borders.

During this period many projects were carried out and others remain to be implemented. In the course of time three generations of researchers have been formed. Mentioning names would be unfair to those that could be involuntarily omitted. There is still a long way to go. The eagerness for knowledge should not stop. This book is a tribute to all those people who have worked in the different projects of pure and applied science, and educational, and human resources training, granted to this founding program and associated laboratories of the regional center of CONICET in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. The twenty papers which constitute this book have a genuine Latin appeal, having been written by 50 authors based in Argentina and Spain. All this contributions are concerned with Fuegian geological resources. Everyone concerned with this work hopes that it will prove a fitting and lasting memorial to Nacho Subías, whose personal contribution to our knowledge of this geology was outstanding.

Book Geodynamic Evolution of the Southernmost Andes

Download or read book Geodynamic Evolution of the Southernmost Andes written by Matías C. Ghiglione and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-07 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the strong relation between the tectonic evolution of the Southernmost Andes and their closest southern neighbors, the Scotia Sea and Antarctica. Some episodes are related to processes of global significance such as the opening of the Drake Passage, which is somehow linked to Late Cenozoic cooling. Many of the topics covered in the book are subjects of heated debates; as such, not only the latest data and approaches are presented, but different points of view as well. The chapters examine the interrelation between main geodynamic processes and plate tectonics from a multidisciplinary perspective. This Paleozoic-Cenozoic geodynamic evolution of the Southernmost Andes involved interrelated metamorphic, magmatic, sedimentary, and deformational processes directed by plate tectonics. The main topics cover the evolution of the Rocas Verdes basin and the Cordillera Darwin high-grade metamorphic complex, growth of the Patagonian Batholith, development of the Patagonian Orocline, the opening of the Drake Passage during growth of the Scotia Sea, evolution of the Austral-Magallanes foreland basin and its related fold and thrust belt.

Book Textures Structures and Processes of Volcanic Successions

Download or read book Textures Structures and Processes of Volcanic Successions written by Beatriz L.L. Coira and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-18 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a complete study of the Central Andean volcanism and its most distinctive features, from the lower Paleozoic to the Cenozoic times in the framework of its processes, eruptive mechanisms and geodynamic conditions. It helps readers understand the nature of the volcanic geology and the volcaniclastic related deposits linked to the evolution of the Andean continental margin. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the ancient volcanic successions and the difficulties in recognition of the original rock type caused by the effects of deformation, metamorphism and alteration. The authors use distinctive cases to describe how to apply different tools in analysis and interpretation. The selected representative, well exposed and preserved volcanic records of the Southern Central Andes analyzed in this book open new perspectives in the understanding of the volcanic processes linked to active continental margins as the Central Andes. This book will be of special interest to volcanologists and specialists in the earth sciences and appeal to both undergraduate and graduate students in geology.

The basin is one of the largest petroleum provinces in South America and includes a dramatic record of relative sea level changes as well as a unique and globally important palaeontological record. Understanding this region is also central to unravelling the history of the Andes. The latest developments in the study of the area have been combined in this volume to give an integrated series of case studies that document the structural, igneous, sedimentological and palaeontological history of the region from the Triassic to the Recent. This publication provides an introduction into this fascinating region as well as a resource that includes the most complete and up-to-date studies of the area.

Book Patterns and Timing of Exhumation and Foreland Basin Deformation in the Eastern Cordillera of NW Argentina

Download or read book Patterns and Timing of Exhumation and Foreland Basin Deformation in the Eastern Cordillera of NW Argentina written by John D. Trimble and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreland basin segmentation in retroarc orogenic systems like the Central Andes of South America can be associated with two very different modes of deformation: thin-skinned and thick-skinned. The Eastern Cordillera (EC) and related ranges of Bolivia and Argentina exhibits a wide variety of structural features, both thick- and thin-skinned, that make this region a prime area to study the factors that affect fold-and-thrust belts as a whole. This study uses a systematic combination of structural, geochronologic, and thermochronological techniques to investigate how and in what order the various structures of the Argentinian EC from 25-26S have developed in response to the eastward expansion of regional deformation. Detailed geological mapping in the Calchaqui Valley reveals a complex interplay of coeval thick-skinned and thin-skinned deformation that has brittlely deformed a thick Cenozoic succession of synorogenic siliciclastic rocks during Neogene inversion of the Salta Rift system. Detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology determines the maximum depositional age of the uppermost San Felipe Formation to be 2.3 plus or minus 0.1 Ma, and constrains growth in the lower Angastaco Formation by 14.1 plus or minus 0.5 Ma. Apatite (U-Th)/He thermochronology on detrital samples collected across the width of the southernmost EC (~80km) demonstrates a sequential eastward propagation of exhumation (and inferred deformation) from ca. 14-3 Ma. When coupled with published apatite fission-track cooling ages from the Puna-EC margin (Deeken et al., 2006), these new data indicate that the major structures of EC at ~25.5S developed sequentially eastward during the Miocene-Pliocene at a rate of ~8.3 mm/a. This study indicates that the propagation of deformation across the southern Central Andes can be summarized as having four major evolutionary stages, including: (1) development of the Western Cordillera from ca. 90-40 Ma; (2) rapid eastward migration of deformation across the Puna province from ca. 40-38 Ma; (3) distributed shortening and thickening within the Puna province from ca. 38-22 Ma; and (4) eastward migration of deformation and exhumation across the EC from ca. 22-3 Ma. These stages of eastward development of the southern Central Andes appear to be largely controlled by variations in plate convergence, but there is also considerable evidence that the orogen is profoundly affected by pre-existing basement anisotropy and dynamic mantle processes. Similar propagation rates of the thin-skinned EC of Bolivia, the thin-skinned Subandes of NW Argentina, and the thick-skinned southern EC of Argentina suggests that the rate at which the Central Andean orogenic system expands eastward is a factor that is independent of the magnitude of basement involvement.

Book Structure of the Patagonian Fold thrust Belt in the Magallanes Region of Chile 53 55 S Lat

This book was released on 2013 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The southern Patagonian Andes record the Late Cretaceous closure and inversion of the Late Jurassic -- Early Cretaceous Rocas Verdes marginal basin, subsequent development of the Patagonian retroarc fold-thrust belt and the Neogene to present tectonic superposition of a left-lateral strike-slip plate margin defined by the Magallanes- Fagnano fault zone. In this dissertation, I present new geologic maps, cross sections and detailed macro- and microscopic structural analyses that describe the geometry and kinematic evolution of the fold-thrust belt and superposed strike-slip deformation over ~200 km along-strike between 53° and 55° S latitude. Results are discussed in the context of the regional tectonic development of the southernmost Andes and are relevant to the understanding of important tectonic processes including the development of a retroarc fold-thrust belt, the formation of a basal décollement below and toward the hinterland of a fold-thrust belt and the spatial distribution of deformation along a strike-slip plate margin. New maps and balanced cross-sections of the Patagonian fold-thrust belt show that it developed during two main phases of Late Cretaceous to Paleogene shortening that were partly controlled by the antecedent geology and mechanical stratigraphy of the Rocas Verdes basin. During the Late Cretaceous, a thin-skinned thrust belt developed above a décollement that formed first in relatively weak shale deposits of the Rocas Verdes basin and later deepened to

Book Geological Investigations at the Southern Tip of the Americas

Download or read book Geological Investigations at the Southern Tip of the Americas written by William Dickson Cunningham and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Patagonian Orocline is the 90° bend in the southernmost Andes between 50°S and 56°S. New paleomagnetic data indicate that the orocline is, at least in part, the product of tectonic rotation. Field work in the Beagle Channel region of southernmost Chile provides evidence for widespread left-lateral strikeslip faulting in the internal zones of the mountain belt. Both arms of the Beagle Channel are interpreted to be left-lateral strike-slip faults based on detailed study of mesoscale strike-slip faults (Riedel shears) in coastal outcrops. Although much of the evidence indicates Cenozoic brittle strike-slip faulting, Late Cretaceous brittle-ductile strike-slip and oblique-slip shear zones and S1, L1 fabric trends in southern Cordillera Darwin indicate that a component of strikeslip deformation accompanied Late Cretaceous deformation. Detailed mapping of D1 and D2 structural trends in three separate areas in southern Cordillera Darwin and the identification of an uplifted upper ophiolitic sequence on Isla Gordon immediately south of Cordillera Darwin suggest that the mid-Cretaceous Andean orogeny involved the transpressional inversion of the Rocas Verdes marinal basin. Progressive transpression appears to have been the dominant deformational regime in the region for the last 120 Ma years. This conclusion is supported by quantitative analysis of southern South America-Antarctic Peninsula relative motion for 150-0 Ma that indicates a significant strike-slip component of relative motion has existed between southern South America and the Antarctic Peninsula since the Early Cretaceous opening of the South Atlantic. A new model is proposed that integrates the development of strike-slip faulting and the structural evolution and uplift of the southernmost Andes with the rotational development of the orocline. The Patagonian Orocline appears to be the product of broad interplate shearing accommodated by strike-slip faulting, block rotation and contraction and is probably continuing to evolve today. The uplift of the Cordillera Darwin metamorphic complex may have been due to hinged unroofing in a transpressional restraining bend setting.
