Book Mountain Geoecology and Sustainable Development of the Tibetan Plateau

Download or read book Mountain Geoecology and Sustainable Development of the Tibetan Plateau written by Du Zheng and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intense uplift of the Tibetan Plateau in Late Cenozoic Era is one of the most important events in geological history of the Earth. The plateau offers an ideal region for studying of lithospheric formation and evolution, probing into the mechanism of crustal movement, and understanding of changes in environments and geo-ecosystems in Asia. Intense uplift ofthe plateau resulted in drastic changes of natural environment and apparent regional differentiation on the plateau proper and neighboring regions. The plateau therefore becomes a sensitive area of climate change in Asian monsoon region, which is closely related to the global change. As a special physical unit, its ecosystems occupy a prominent position in the world. Due to its extremely high elevation and great extent, natural types and characteristics of physical landscapes on the plateau are quite different from those in lowlands at comparable latitudes, and environments are also different from those in high latitudinal zones. Consequently, the Tibetan Plateau has been classified as one of three giant physical regions in China and considered as a unique unit on Earth. Scientific surveys and expeditions to the Tibetan Plateau on large scale began from 1950's. Amongst them, a number of comprehensive scientific expeditions to the Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region, Hengduan Mts. areas, Karakorum and Kunlun Mts. regions, as well as the Hoh Xii Mts. areas, have been successively carried out by the Integrated Scientific Expedition to Tibetan Plateau, sponsored by Chinese Academy of Sciences since 1973.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy, Resources and Environment documents the first U.S.-China Conference and discusses the concerns about the world's energy situation, such as its resource, environmental effects, and possible alternative sources. The book is comprised of 72 chapters including the keynote address, five lecture papers, and 66 technical papers that are organized according to its contents, specifically the type of energy it discusses. The text begins with the keynote address, and then discusses the plenary and technical papers. The plenary papers discuss the importance of energy, resources, environment, and future development. The technical papers cover the technological advancement of alternative energy source and their application. The conference covers the following theme: chemical fuels, coal energy, electric power systems, energy conservation, geothermal and other natural energy, hydropower, ice storage for cooling, solar energy, wind energy, economic aspect of energy utilization, and impact of energy on the environment. The book will be of great interest to individuals concerned with the development of alternative energy sources. Researchers whose work involves alternative energy will be able to make use of this book as a reference material.

Book Contemporary Ecology Research in China

Download or read book Contemporary Ecology Research in China written by Wenhua Li and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-26 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chinese government is increasingly focusing on ecological construction and has subscribed to a national “Ecological Civilization Construction”. Ecological research and protection practice develop so fast and achieve a lot at the national agenda. This book is a synthesis of five most exciting and dominant themes in contemporary ecological research in China: biodiversity, ecosystem management, degraded ecosystem restoration, global change and sustainable development. This book spans all the Earth's major ecosystems, such as forests, oceans, grasslands, wetlands, lakes, rivers, farmland and cities. This book provides a platform for scientific research across a variety of disciplines. It will be invaluable to experts, policymakers and local officers and will also be a highly useful resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students. This book will allow researchers, students and policymakers outside China to learn about the significant achievements and applications of ecological research within China.

Book Wildlife of the Tibetan Steppe

Download or read book Wildlife of the Tibetan Steppe written by George B. Schaller and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2000-05 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chang Tang, the vast, remote Tibetan steppe, is one of the most forbidding places on earth. Yet this harsh land is home to a unique assemblage of large mammals, including Tibetan antelope, gazelle, argali sheep, wild ass, wild yak, wolves, snow leopards, and others. Since 1985, George B. Schaller and his Chinese and Tibetan co-workers have surveyed the flora and fauna of the Chang Tang. Their research provides the first detailed look at the natural history of one of the world's least known ecosystems.

Book Himalayan Weather and Climate and their Impact on the Environment

Download or read book Himalayan Weather and Climate and their Impact on the Environment written by A.P. Dimri and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-08 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. It highlights the role of the Himalayas in defining local to regional to global scale impact on weather and climate. It includes Himalayan impact on defining physical basis of changing glacier systems, permafrost melting/thawing, climate variability, and hydrological balances. As a result, this volume represents an important synthesized overview both for environmental and earth science researchers, and for policy makers and stakeholders interested in the physical and dynamical processes associated with the Himalayan massif.

Book Big bone disease a multidisciplinary approach of Kashin Beck disease in Tibet Autonomous Region P R China

Download or read book Big bone disease a multidisciplinary approach of Kashin Beck disease in Tibet Autonomous Region P R China written by Malaisse, François and published by Presses Agronomiques de Gembloux. This book was released on 2008 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kashin-Beck disease is probably one of the most neglected diseases. It occurs in only a very limited part of the world, in a crescent shape area situated from South East Siberia to North West China. It affects mainly the rural population of these remote regions and more specifically the children. They are suffering from a lot of joint pain and lose their mobility. They stop to grow properly and they became severely handicapped. Since more than 15 years, an international team together with his partner, the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention of Tibet Autonomous Region, are studying this disease with, sometimes, very limited means but always in a marvellous environment. Their daily workmates are the lovely children, the yaks and other animals of the Himalaya region as well as the unique variety of flowers and plants, under the beautiful shadow of some of the highest peaks of the world. Their unique multidisciplinary approach of the complex issue of the Kashin-Beck disease is done with a constant worry of a better knowledge of the environment and its population. Through a lot of beautiful pictures and some more scientific data, the authors, with an immoderate enthusiasm, will drive you along the valleys of the high Tibetan plateau and will accompany you for a visit from one village to another to meet these patients and understand the difficulties of their daily life.
