The term “geoheritage” refers to a particular type of natural resources represented by sites of special geological significance, rarity or beauty that are representative of a region and of its geological history, events, and processes. These sites are also known as “geosites” and, as well as archaeological, architectonic, and historical sites, can be considered as part of the cultural estate of a country. “Geotourism” is an emerging type of sustainable tourism, which concentrates on geosites, focusing on visitor knowledge, environmental education, and amusement. Geotourism may be very useful for geological sciences divulgation and may provide additional opportunities for the development of rural areas, generally not included among the main touristic attractions. The collected papers focused on these main topics with different methods and approaches and can be grouped as follows: i) papers dealing with geosite promotion and valorization in protected areas; ii) papers dealing with geosite promotion and valorization in non-protected areas; iii) papers dealing with geosite promotion by exhibition, remote sensing analysis, and apps; iv) papers investigating geotourism and geoheritage from tourists’ perspectives.

Because natural hot springs and active hydrothermal areas play a significant role in the tourism industry, visitor expectations are examined together with an assessment of common hazards and potential risks in active hydrothermal environments, along with recommendations how to stay safe. For the purpose of showcasing certain unique features, to share noteworthy events and developments or to identify concerns associated with the sustainability of natural water source, examples of particular hot spring areas are included in several chapters. One chapter is also dedicated entirely to the protection of natural hot springs and raises awareness for conservation, while another chapter reviews the history of hot springs in great detail to establish a realistic and justifiable timeline of their original use. Lastly, the significance of natural hot springs for various tourism sectors is analysed and the potential for sustainable future destination development in rural and remote regions is discussed. Many locations were considered and invite the reader to use the information as a reference point in the quest to further explore the remarkable natural and cultural geoheritage of hot springs worldwide.

The extensive Kalahari Sand surface has been sculptured by numerous past processes which have produced subtle but regional landforms consisting of extensive dunes and shorelines. Incipient rifting has created the dynamic Okavango and Makgadikgadi fan-basin systems which produces iconic wetlands with a world heritage status. Geological outcrops in particular to the east expose highly denuded basement lithologies which produces numerous inselbergs that are home to a rich archaeological heritage. The book also examines the geomorphology of mineral and water resources which sustain the economy and population and also features dedicated chapters that cover diamondiferous kimberlites, caves, pans, dams, duricrusts and wildlife. This region is the result of geologic forces during two vastly different periods in time that shaped spectacular landscapes¿the largest lava flow known on Earth, stunning red cliffs of sandstone, an archipelago in the largest freshwater lake in the world, wave-tossed pebble beaches, dunes, and Lake Superior itself. This book offers a general introduction to the processes behind the diverse and globally significant geology of the Keweenaw Peninsula and Isle Royale and the relationship of that geology to human inhabitants, known as geoheritage.Humans came to North America more than 15,000 years ago when the glaciers were receding and leaving magnificent pieces of copper on the surface. Evidence from Isle Royale indicates that early people mined this area 4,500 years ago, although mining likely began here much earlier. Keweenaw copper was discovered at McCargoe Cove on Isle Royale, marking what is referred to as the North American Bronze Age. During this time, copper was traded all over NorthAmerica. Ancient pits have been discovered at dozens of sites on Isle Royale and the Keweenaw, and beautiful copper objects have been found throughout the Midwest, particularly in Wisconsin. Archaeological evidence along with a rich storytelling tradition indicates that early inhabitants had a deep understanding of the geologic landscape. Copper treasure from the Earth was a focus of human interest and marks the beginning of our geoheritage.
