Book The Anarchist Roots of Geography

Download or read book The Anarchist Roots of Geography written by Simon Springer and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anarchist Roots of Geography sets the stage for a radical politics of possibility and freedom through a discussion of the insurrectionary geographies that suffuse our daily experiences. By embracing anarchist geographies as kaleidoscopic spatialities that allow for nonhierarchical connections between autonomous entities, Simon Springer configures a new political imagination. Experimentation in and through space is the story of humanity’s place on the planet, and the stasis and control that now supersede ongoing organizing experiments are an affront to our survival. Singular ontological modes that favor one particular way of doing things disavow geography by failing to understand the spatial as a mutable assemblage intimately bound to temporality. Even worse, such stagnant ideas often align to the parochial interests of an elite minority and thereby threaten to be our collective undoing. What is needed is the development of new relationships with our world and, crucially, with each other. By infusing our geographies with anarchism we unleash a spirit of rebellion that foregoes a politics of waiting for change to come at the behest of elected leaders and instead engages new possibilities of mutual aid through direct action now. We can no longer accept the decaying, archaic geographies of hierarchy that chain us to statism, capitalism, gender domination, racial oppression, and imperialism. We must reorient geographical thinking towards anarchist horizons of possibility. Geography must become beautiful, wherein the entirety of its embrace is aligned to emancipation.

Download or read book Colton and Fitch s Primer of Geography Classic Reprint written by George Woolworth Colton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colton and Fitch's Primer of Geography Geography looks like a long, hard word; but you will soon get used to it, and learn its meaning very clearly. Geography teaches us all about the Earth on which we live but in this book you will only study some of the simple facts of the science. After a while you will have larger works, which will explain more fully many things that it is desirable you should learn. You all know that Land and Water, are found on the Earth's surface Some people live in the country on farms, some have their homes in cities or towns while still others sail on the sea in ships, or ride from place to place in steamboats, sloops, etc. It is quite important that we should first learn the name and nature of those objects nearest to us, and then we shall be able to form a clearer idea of such as are beyond our sight. The solid part of the Earth's surface we call Land, and the rest is Water. Farms are land rivers, lakes, etc. Are water. Book excerpt: Geocomputation is the use of software and computing power to solve complex spatial problems. It is gaining increasing importance in the era of the ‘big data’ revolution, of ‘smart cities’, of crowdsourced data, and of associated applications for viewing and managing data geographically - like Google Maps. This student focused book: Provides a selection of practical examples of geocomputational techniques and ‘hot topics’ written by world leading practitioners. Integrates supporting materials in each chapter, such as code and data, enabling readers to work through the examples themselves. Chapters provide highly applied and practical discussions of: Visualisation and exploratory spatial data analysis Space time modelling Spatial algorithms Spatial regression and statistics Enabling interactions through the use of neogeography All chapters are uniform in design and each includes an introduction, case studies, conclusions - drawing together the generalities of the introduction and specific findings from the case study application – and guidance for further reading. This accessible text has been specifically designed for those readers who are new to Geocomputation as an area of research, showing how complex real-world problems can be solved through the integration of technology, data, and geocomputational methods. This is the applied primer for Geocomputation in the social sciences.
