Book New Zealand Its Physical Geography Geology and Natural History

Download or read book New Zealand Its Physical Geography Geology and Natural History written by Ferdinand von Hochstetter and published by . This book was released on 1867 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Inhabited by Polynesians since the thirteenth century and discovered by Europeans in the seventeenth, New Zealand is a geologically diverse island group where active volcanoes and frequent earthquakes have resulted in a rich variety of rock formations and geothermal activity. In 1859-60, the geologist Ferdinand von Hochstetter (1829-84) was employed by Auckland's government to undertake the first systematic geological survey of the islands, the results of which were first published in German in 1863 and translated into this English version in 1867. Hochstetter describes his travels across New Zealand, his encounters with native people and his scientific observations. He analyses plants, wildlife and fossils, describes mountains, rocks and boiling springs, and evaluates evidence of glaciers and tectonic activity. As a result of Hochstetter's work, several species in New Zealand were named after him. This book remains a valuable resource in the history of Australasian natural science'-- Publisher.

Book excerpt: *Best Books of 2014* New Zealand Listener Imagine a typical continent with seemingly endless land in all directions. There are broad valleys and uplands, wide-open vistas across undulating plains, and upstanding mountain ranges far in the distance. There may be prominent features that command attention and draw the eye, such as odd-shaped hills, peaks, pinnacles, mesas and volcanoes. And there may be canyons, valleys, gorges, large depressions and basins. Now imagine this same continent under the sea, and largely drowned. Welcome to Zealandia. Continents are some of Planet Earth's most striking geographic and geological features. To have a continental identity is to be important, significant, recognised. This book makes a compelling claim for Zealandia to take its place alongside Eurasia, Africa, North America, South America, Australia and Antarctica. Zealandia is a continent almost entirely submerged. With New Zealand as its largest inhabited land mass, it stretches north to incorporate New Caledonia, south beyond Auckland and Campbell islands, west beyond Australia's Lord Howe Island and east past the Chathams. Its ancestry reaches back more than half a billion years - a long, complex and dramatic story of growth, stretching, break-up, submergence, immersion and collision. The story of its cargo of plant and animal life is also one of change - of extinction, adaption and migration. A big book full of big ideas, and brought to you by renowned GNS scientists Hamish Campbell (co-author of In Search of Ancient New Zealand) and Nick Mortimer, Zealandia: Our Continent Revealed is in every respect a landmark publication - thought-provoking, visually stunning and eminently readable. 'I couldn't resist this superbly illustrated and persuasively written voyage through the distant past. It's fascinating stuff that will undoubtedly generate considerable debate.' - Christopher Moore, New Zealand Listener

Book Geography in Focus Teaching and Learning in Issues Based Classsrooms

Download or read book Geography in Focus Teaching and Learning in Issues Based Classsrooms written by Mike Taylor and published by Nzcer Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive and stimulating discussion of issues-based geography education in Aotearoa New Zealand. It is an essential read for geography teachers and educators from the wider social sciences. Geography as a subject gets little attention in curriculum and assessment literature. Seeking to address that gap, the authors - teachers and academic practitioners - have thought deeply about the complexities and limitations of issues-based approaches. This book is not intended to offer strategies for teaching but the voices of teachers and the challenges of classroom practice come through strongly. Chapters include an exploration of social inquiry methodology here and internationally; the importance of subject-specific literacy in geography classrooms and the role of NGOs in development education. The case is made for subject knowledge to ensure the big ideas of geography are not lost and there is a critique of futures education discourse. Above all, the writers urge teachers to focus on the core business of teaching and learning and to lift the conversation beyond the constraints of NCEA.

Book Aotearoa New Zealand

Download or read book Aotearoa New Zealand written by Alan H. Grey and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past 200 years have seen the reconstruction of the world's human and biological geography through scientific and technical discovery, economic and social change, the expansion of populations and empires, and wars. Up to fifty million Europeans migrated to new lands, sweeping aside or assimilating indigenous peoples and rem-making landscapes in their search for prosperity within world-spanning markets. Sparsely populated and heavily forested, Aotearoa was drawn into these events. Robber economies and ranching were followed swiftly by intensive pastoral and agricultural development. Out of the resulting destruction of forest for pasture New Zealand emerged, becoming ever more urban like its British cultural hearth. Alan Grey traces the context of New Zealand's becoming; from uninhabited islands to 1935, when most aspects of today's landscapes were in place. The result is essential reading for historians, geographers and all with an interest in New Zealand's history and landscapes.

Book excerpt: An extraordinary visual data book like no other. Clustered yet scattered, we New Zealanders live across the country's physical landscapes, experiencing its varied weather and environments. We co-create its political, economic and social systems on a daily basis. Each of us has a particular view of Aotearoa, yet nobody comprehends the whole. This book's sets of maps and graphics help New Zealanders make sense of their country, to grasp the scale, diversity and intricacies of Aotearoa, and to experience feelings of connection to land, to place, to this time in our history, and to one another. By making data visible, each graphic reveals insights about Aotearoa. They answer a range of questions: Who visits us? How many fish are in the sea? How equal are we? How do we hurt ourselves? Where do our cats go to at night? This compelling mixture of charts, graphs, diagrams, maps and illustrations is functional, beautiful, insightful and enlightening. It tells us where we are, here, in 2018. Essays by some of New Zealand's best thinkers complete the package.
