Book Material for Geography of Michigan

Download or read book Material for Geography of Michigan written by Mark Sylvester William Jefferson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Material for Geography of Michigan There are today 18 states larger than Michigan, but most of these are west of the 100th meridian and many of them limited for human occupancy by insufficient rainfall. In parts of our state the rainfall is light, but everywhere sufficient for agriculture. If a circle be drawn with its center at the southeastern corner of Michigan large enough to extend across Isle Royale, it will also include New York, Washington, Richmond, Va., and Raleigh, N. C. The radius of the circle would be five hundred miles. No state has so long a coast line. None has a greater variety of valuable resources. Lying far to the north the lakes save it from the rigor of an interior climate, yet is it in that invigorating zone of the spells of weather, now warm, now cold, now wet, now dry, in which are found the most prosperous and progressive peoples, the world over. Our state is a part of the physical region of the great lakes. All parts of this area drain to the St. Lawrence river; all parts enjoy the milder climate that comes from the presence of these great bodies of water, loth to heat up under the sun of summer and equally slow in winter to yield up what warmth they have. The great economic distinction of the region lies in the enormous transportation possibilities of broad and deep water ways between the pass over the almost imperceptible divide at Chicago leading to the Mississippi basin and the prairie states and that in the Mohawk valley leading to the Atlantic seaboard and to Europe. It is no coincidence that the growth of the Northwest territory has been parallelled by the expansion of New York, the only Atlantic port connected by an easy pass with the interior of the continent. We observe at once that to study the physical aspects of the state we must consider a wider area than state or country. But they are under threat as never before, and their problems are spreading across the continent. Book Waterways of the Great Lakes

Download or read book Waterways of the Great Lakes written by Walter LaPlante and published by Gareth Stevens Publishing LLLP. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Lakes watershed can be traveled from end to end--from the St. Lawrence River all the way to Duluth, Minnesota. In order for that to happen, man-made waterways had to be constructed to bypass rapids and aid ships moving from one water depth to another. Readers travel the basin through main content that includes geography, history, and interesting details that tie it all together. Descriptive maps of the region aid understanding and complement map skills emphasized in the social studies curriculum. Readers see how all the waterways work together to make one vibrant region.

Book Mapping in Michigan the Great Lakes Region

Download or read book Mapping in Michigan the Great Lakes Region written by David I. Macleod and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated chapter on the renowned Michigan map expert Louis Karpinski opens this volume, following a comparative introduction by the noted cartographic historian David Buisseret. Twelve chapters tell particular stories. Often these narratives extend well beyond the limits of today's state of Michigan. American Indian mapmakers sought to give directions and convey cosmological meanings and political relationships; only gradually did they adopt the geometric framing and uniformity of European maps, which reflected a different set of cultural attitudes. Would-be colonial governors mapped to promote their dreams. Boundary commissioners surveyed and mapped to settle contested claims and lay the foundations for peace along the U.S.-Canadian border. On the Canadian side, surveyors drew maps to build up the new British colony against American influences and encroachments. Mapmakers were also ambitious entrepreneurs, peddling illustrated county atlases to proud farm owners, bird's-eye views to show off towns, and plat and insurance maps to aid property development. In describing how people produced and used maps, contributors tell a larger story of one region's peoples and cultures--and of a nation's zeal for exploration.
