Wherever any definite comparisons are made, they are intended only for reference, and not to be learnt; and comparisons between the size of African and British cities have been avoided, as the conditions of native life make them only misleading. Download or read book Geography of Africa South of the Zambesi written by William Henry Parr Greswell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geography of Africa South of the Zambesi The Continent of Africa admits of being divided into several distinct areas in which the activities of European nations are being displayed, but in no portion of it is the power of European colonisation, in the truest sense of the word, more visible than in the vast regions which may be distinguished by the general geographical definition of 'Africa south of the Zambesi.' South Africa has ceased to be a country of mere sporting adventure or of aimless wanderings. It is gradually being identified with the European system; and by recent international conventions and agreements under the Salisbury Government, boundaries have been assigned and frontiers surveyed which are likely to be both permanent and beneficial to all contracting parties, on the east as well as on the west coast. Great Britain is deeply pledged in South Africa, and she is concentrating her great colonising energies here rather than, for instance, on the north and north-west of the continent, which she is apparently leaving to her powerful neighbour, France. Download or read book The Geography of British South Africa Classic Reprint written by George Townsend Warner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geography of British South Africa In this book I have tried to describe in a simple way the main geographical features of British South Africa. In doing so it is impossible to avoid altogether the history of past quarrels, but in mentioning them I have endeavoured to be fair, and to keep clear of political controversies which are still hot. I have not thought it wise to go into any statistics. These pass out of date almost as speedily as they slip from the memory. But the physical features of the land, its climate and resources, the character of its inhabitants, its flora and fauna, its industries and occupations are more or less abiding. To these I have given most space. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Africa Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Africa Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by A. Henry Keane and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Africa, Vol. 1 IN the new issue of this series the single volume formerly thought sufficient for the treatment of African geography is replaced by two, each somewhat larger than that work. Yet the more than doubled space has seemed scarcely adequate to a proper exposition of the facts, both of a geographical and political order, which have accumulated with surprising rapidity since the leading Powers resolved, a few years ago, to transform this continent to a political dependency of Europe. Occurrences of far-reaching consequence have followed-in such swift succession that in the preparation of this work the chief difficulty has been to keep pace with the shifting scenes. In some instances many carefully-prepared pages have had to be greatly modified, and even re-written, owing to the un expected turn taken by events in various parts of the continent. Book A First Geography of South Africa Classic Reprint

Download or read book A First Geography of South Africa Classic Reprint written by A. Moir Robb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Geography of South Africa This book of South African Geography has been written for children of Standards III or IV. It meets the requirements for Standard III laid down in the new Geography Syllabus of the Transvaal Education De partment; and it will also be found suitable for the work of Standard IV in the Cape Province and Natal. Naturally, there has been no attempt to make the book a complete treatise on the geography of the Union of South Africa, its neighbours and dependencies; but it is hoped that it will be found to cover the ground with sufficient fullness for beginners. I must acknowledge my indebtedness to the Publicity Department of the South African Railways for permission to reproduce some of their beautiful photographs, and especially to Mr. J. Smith, the photographer of that department, for kind advice in making a selection. To friends, 'who have generously supplied me with views for reproduction, I have to express also my warmest thanks; their names are duly mentioned with the illustrations. My thanks, too, are due to the newspapers of this country for much valuable information. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great African Travellers: From Mungo Park to Livingstone and StanleyMany of England's sons have earned enduring fame by the explora tion of Africa; indeed, our knowledge of the Continent is mainly due to the enterprise and courage of Englishmen.Passing over the explorations of the earlier travellers in the last and first half of the present century, it was to Livingstone that the stimulus for geographical research is mainly to be attributed. That great man practically taught us all we know of Southern Africa on both banks of the Zambesi, from one side of Africa to the other, and Burton and Speke initiated the discoveries of the more central lacustrine regions, which have culminated in the last journey of Stanley, to whom the author of this volume has dedicated this imperfect record of African travel.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Africa and Its Explorers, Vol. 3: The Last of a Long Tale; The Sahara; The Missionaries; The Hunters; The International Explorers Iemark a peculiar feature in the physical geography Of this part of Africa, River pecw namely, the dovetailing of the armies sources of rivers which, in the rest of their courses, run in Opposite directions. Thus, close to the source of the Kwito rise three other rivers, two of which flow into the Atlantic by the Kwanza, Of which they are tributaries, and one into the Indian Ocean through the Zambesi. The same feature is noticeable even beyond Lake Bemba (or Bangweolo), the Congo and Zambesi as well as their effluents having their sources and mingling their streams near to the twelfth parallel of south latitude. East of the river Kwito, the Kwando, which Livingstone calls the Chobe (vol. II., pp. 195, 199, etc), takes its rise. It forms a fine, large, navigable river, watering a great extent of inhabitable and fer tile country, and receives several afiiuents 'as navig able as itself and all destined in future years to be enlivened by barges, boats, and steamers: In this forest-covered region, where the elephant still abounds, we meet with the Mucassequeres, a tribe Of a yellowish - white colour.
