Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geographic Influences in American History In the chapters which follow, an attempt has been made to combine the materials of American history and geography. One must invent a method as he can, for models in this field can scarcely be said to exist. The plan chosen is geographic, as might be expected from a student of earth science. Each division of the book deals with a region which is more or less distinct in its physical development, and which often shows in the end a good measure of historical unity. Parkman and Fiske have been among the most useful historical authorities; also McMaster, and the "Winning of the West," by Theodore Roosevelt, who, as an official and as a private citizen, has shown an unfailing appreciation of the physical features of our country. Prof. Charles Worthen Spencer of Colgate University has kindly read the manuscript of the volume and has made valuable suggestions. Book Geography History and the American Political Economy

Download or read book Geography History and the American Political Economy written by John Heppen and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2009-08-16 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection takes on the call issued by reviewers of The American Way for a critical application of Carville Earle's framework to more geographical examples of political and economic shifts in America's past. The essays illustrate changes in U.S. settlement, development, and political structure through the lens of the restructuring of the American economy and society over approximately fifty year cycles of crisis and recovery. They demonstrate the extension of American's sphere of influence outside of the United States as a larger scalar shift, and they underscore the utility of geography in answering very local questions concerning questions of poorly documented settlement histories. Focusing on the geographic responses to periodic cycles of crisis and recovery and the more general underlying intertwining of geography and history, Geography, History, and the American Political Economy is an incisive demonstration of how the constant restructuring of American politics and economy occurs within spatial and historical constructs.

Book The Geography Behind History

Download or read book The Geography Behind History written by William Gordon East and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 1965 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Professor East discusses the vital relationship between history and geographical conditions. Drawing examples from ancient times up to the present, he demonstrates that a study of history must include consideration of the physical conditions under which an event occurs, and that "the particular characteristics of this setting serve not only to localise but also to influence part at least of the action." Topographical position, climate, distribution of water and minerals, the placement of routes and towns, and ease or difficulty of movement between districts and countries are among the factors which the historian must take into account. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American History It has been the aim of the authors of this book to give the main features in the development of our Nation, to explain the America of to-day, its civilization and its traditions. In order to do this, it was necessary to select topics from the various fields of human activity, the political, industrial, social, educational, and religious. Emphasis has been placed upon the fact that the position the United States occupies among the great nations is due primarily to the achievements of men and women in these fields. Consequently the military phases of our history, striking as some of them are, have in a measure been subordinated to the accounts of the victories of peace. We have thought it desirable also to give greater prominence than has been usual in school texts to the advance of the frontier and to the growth and influence of the West. Particular care has been taken to state the essential facts in European history necessary to the explanation of events in America. How may the subject be best presented to the pupils of high-school age has been constantly in mind. To that end, only trustworthy illustrative material has been included and the maps have been prepared with great care. While there is no separate chapter or section devoted to a discussion of the physical geography of America, it will be noted that the influence of geographical conditions has been constantly stated in connection with events and conditions mentioned in the volume.
