While the principles set forth are world-wide in their ap plication, the illustrations used to enforce them are drawn almost wholly from the features and phenomena of the state. Wherever state lines are ignored and the boundary is crossed it is to secure what seems neces sary to make clear the causes of conditions about us. For instance: almost the whole state presents manifold evidence of the work of glaciers; to show a glacier and its setting as a physical factor, appeal is made to the Yoho valley near the summit of the Albertan Rockies. Figure 29, Chapter VIII, is a picture of the interesting Yoho glacier. As the pupil looks at this picture and, in imagination, sees it expand into an ice stream hundreds of miles long and scarcely less in width, its moraines, in places, looming up hundreds of feet high and its wash filling prairies and plains scores of feet in depth, with identically the same materials as one finds every where throughout the state, there will become clear to the mind conditions well-nigh universal in Minnesota only a few thousand years ago. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Minnesota, Vol. 1 of 4 During his presidency at the university Dr. Folwell not only laid broad and firm foundations for that institution but also took the lead in promoting the development of high schools and in building up a unified system of public educa tion in the state. The establishment of the Minnesota Geological and Natural History Survey in 1872 was also a result of his foresight and initiative. After his resignation from the presidency of the university in 1884 Dr. Folwell rendered notable services to that institution as professor of political science and as librarian until his retirement in 1907. His influence, however, was by no means confined to scholastic matters. He could always be counted on to aid in any movement for the advancement of culture and the public welfare. Thus he was one of the founders of the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts and served as its president from 1869 to 1884; from 1888 to 1906 he was an active mem ber of the Minneapolis park commission; and from 1896 to 1902 he served on the state board of charities and correc tions. The first part, embracing the popular. And semi technical descriptions, is now in press, and when issued will constitute an interesting publication of the survey. The other portion is in Prof. Herrick's hands, and when it has been revised by him, and changed so as to comport with the advances made since the volume was first tendered for publication, it will appear as another bulletin of the survey. The report of Dr. Hatch on the Birds of the state is intended for similar publication, but it is not at hand. Dr. Hatch left the state about a year ago and has never actually put his manuscript in the custody of the survey. His present address is unknown.
