Book Socio Economic Human Rights in Essential Public Services Provision

Download or read book Socio Economic Human Rights in Essential Public Services Provision written by Marlies Hesselman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a clear overlap between securing socio-economic human rights for all persons and arranging adequate access to essential public services across society. Both are necessary to realise thriving, inclusive societies, with adequate living standards for all, based on human dignity. This edited volume brings together the two topics for the first time. In particular, it identifies the common challenges for essential public services provision and socio-economic human rights realisation, and it explores how socio-economic rights law can be harnessed to reinforce better access to services. An important aim of this book is to understand how international socio-economic human rights law and guideposts can be used and strengthened to improve access to services, and assess socio-economic legal and policy decisions. The volume includes contributions from different continents, on a range of different services, and engages with the realities of different regulatory settings. After an introduction that sets out the most important challenges for universal access to services – including sufficient resources mobilisation, private actor involvement and regulation, or the need for improved checks and balances – the book goes on to discuss current issues in services provision and socio-economic rights, as well as explores the place and role of private business actors in the provision of services. In particular, it assesses how the responsibility and accountability of such actors for human rights can be improved . The final part of the book narrows in on the under-explored human rights concepts of ‘participation’ and ‘accountability’, as essential prerequisites for better ‘checks and balances’. Overall, this volume presents a unique and powerful illustration of how socio-economic human rights law supports improved access to essential public services for all.

Book The Mystical Geography of Quebec

Download or read book The Mystical Geography of Quebec written by Susan J. Palmer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of new religious movements in Quebec focuses on nine groups—including the notoriously violent Solar Temple; the iconoclastic Temple of Priapus; and the various “Catholic” schisms, such as those led by a mystical pope; the Holy Spirit incarnate; or the reappearance of the Virgin Mary. Eleven contributing authors offer rich ethnographies and sociological insights on new spiritual groups that highlight the quintessential features of Quebec's new religions (“sectes” in the francophone media). The editors argue that Quebec provides a favorable “ecology” for alternative spirituality, and explore the influences behind this situation: the rapid decline of the Catholic Church after Vatican Il; the “Quiet Revolution,” a utopian faith in Science; the 1975 Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms; and an open immigration that welcomes diverse faiths. The themes of Quebec nationalism found in prophetic writings that fuel apocalyptic ferment are explored by the editors who find in these sectarian communities echoes of Quebec’s larger Sovereignty movement.

Download or read book Provider Led Population Health Management written by Richard Hodach and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provider-Led Population Health Management: Key Healthcare Strategies in the Cognitive Era, Second Edition draws connections among the new care-delivery models, the components of population health management, and the types of health IT that are required to support those components. The key concept that ties all of this together is that PHM requires a high degree of automation to reach everyone in a population, engage those patients in self-care, and maximize the chance that they will receive the proper preventive, chronic, and acute care. While this book is intended for healthcare executives and policy experts, anyone who is interested in health care can learn something from its exploration of the major issues that are stirring health care today. In the end, the momentous changes going on in health care will affect us all.
