In the absence of a reference map, they serve as a substitute to a good degree, especially in defining the boundaries of counties and towns, being free from names, they are perfectly distinct to the eye. It also gives all the most valuable particulars of the late Geological Survey, not only in relation to the Geology and Mineralogy, but also to the Botany and Zoology of the State. To the Politician it is a valuable manual, furnishing him with the new Constitution, the organization of the different departments of the State Government, the history of the land purchases, which have been the source of much controversy in the State, and the Statistics of wealth, manufactures and population in each County. To the friend of education, this book is valuable on account of its full and accurate statistics of the history, progress, and present condition of the Public Schools, the Normal School, the Universities, Colleges and Academies in the state, together with the Common School System. Learning them by heart is a rite of passage in grade school, a pedagogical exercise that emphasizes the importance of committing place-names to memory. But geographers have yet to analyze state capitals in any depth. In American Capitals, Christian Montès takes us on a well-researched journey across America—from Augusta to Sacramento, Albany to Baton Rouge—shedding light along the way on the historical circumstances that led to their appointment, their success or failure, and their evolution over time. While all state capitals have a number of characteristics in common—as symbols of the state, as embodiments of political power and decision making, as public spaces with private interests—Montès does not interpret them through a single lens, in large part because of the differences in their spatial and historical evolutionary patterns. Some have remained small, while others have evolved into bustling metropolises, and Montès explores the dynamics of change and growth. All but eleven state capitals were established in the nineteenth century, thirty-five before 1861, but, rather astonishingly, only eight of the fifty states have maintained their original capitals. Despite their revered status as the most monumental and historical cities in America, capitals come from surprisingly humble beginnings, often plagued by instability, conflict, hostility, and corruption. Preceding this core part of the Gazetteer is a full 150-page survey of the government, topography, & institutions of the state of New York. Outstanding as the Gazetteer is, its usefulness as a research tool is severely limited by the lack of an index to the thousands of narnes that appear in the text & footnotes. But this reprint edition puts an end to this unfortunate situation, as it incorporates Frank Place's Index of Names, a 16000-name index first published in 1962 by the Cortland County Historical Society. In 1969 the Society issued a second printing of the Index incorporating a "Supplement" of additions & corrections, & a third printing in 1983 included a "Supplementary Index to Place Names." With the Society's permission, we have incorporated the final index edition of 1983 with our reprint of the Gazetteer, making it the most complete & the most useful edition ever published.
