Book Trace Element and Organic Carbon Accumulation in the Most Recent Sediments of Southern Lake Michigan Classic Reprint

Download or read book Trace Element and Organic Carbon Accumulation in the Most Recent Sediments of Southern Lake Michigan Classic Reprint written by Neil F. Shimp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trace Element and Organic Carbon Accumulation in the Most Recent Sediments of Southern Lake Michigan Trace elements in 21 grab samples and sections of 21 cores from southern Lake Michigan were determined. In all, 119 sediment samples were analyzed for 13 trace elements, organic carbon, and less than 2-micron clay. Results show that bromine, chromium, copper, lead, and zinc are accumulating in the uppermost, recently deposited sediments (o to 10 cm) of the deeper regions of southern Lake Michigan. Prominent areas of concentration occur in sediments off Grand Haven and Benton Harbor in Michigan, off Waukegan in Illinois, and in the lake center near the illinois-wisconsin border. Concentrations of these five trace elements generally increase as the amount of organic carbon in creases. Book Organic Substances and Sediments in Water

Download or read book Organic Substances and Sediments in Water written by Robert A. Baker and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1991-08-19 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fate and transport of natural and anthropogenic sediment-borne organic contaminants is a critical environmental issue and complex processes are involved that until now have been poorly defined. Organic Substances and Sediments in Water is a three-volume book that provides the best information available regarding the many interdisciplinary factors affecting organic substances associated with particulates in water. Topics discussed include absorption and transport of contaminants associated with particles; interfacial processes affecting fate and transport of organic substances associated with particles; the release of contaminants in receiving water bodies; water treatment; the role of biological factors in the fate and transport of organic contaminants in aqueous systems; development of biotransformation in natural and anthropogenic systems; the use of organic contaminant and sediment chemicals; biological and physical data to refine models to be used by resource managers; and chemical and biological processes that affect the fate and transport of organic constituents and determine degradation of contaminants and uptake in plants. This will be an important reference for environmental chemists, environmental engineers, environmental biologists, water treatment and natural system modelers, and soils scientists.

Book Tracking Environmental Change Using Lake Sediments

Download or read book Tracking Environmental Change Using Lake Sediments written by William M. Last and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-06-30 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume in the Developments in Paleoenvironmental Research series deals with the acquisition and archiving of lake sediment cores, chronological techniques, and large-scale basin analysis methods used in paleolimnology. Other volumes deal with physical and geochemical parameters and methods (Volume 2), biological techniques (Volumes 3 and 4), and statistical and data handling methods (Volume 5). These monographs provide sufficient detail and breadth to be useful handbooks for both seasoned practitioners as well as newcomers to the area of paleolimnology. Although the chapters in these volumes target mainly lacustrine settings, many of the techniques described can also be readily applied to fluvial, glacial, marine, estuarine, and peatland environments.
