Book The Boxing Filmography

Download or read book The Boxing Filmography written by Frederick V. Romano and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-09-10 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The love affair between boxing and Hollywood began with the dawn of film. As early as the days of Chaplin, the "boxing film" had assumed its place as a subgenre, and over the decades it has taken the forms of biographies, dramas, romances, comedies, and even musicals and westerns. Such well known pictures as The Champ, Body and Soul, Don King: Only in America, Girl Fight, The Irish in Us, The Kid from Brooklyn, Somebody Up There Likes Me, Raging Bull, each of the Rocky movies and When We Were Kings are just a few examples of the feature films included in this filmography. Thoroughly researched, this work examines 98 boxing films from the 1920s through 2003. Each entry provides basic filmographic data (the film's studio, its genre, its length, cast and credits); a detailed synopsis of the film; illuminating commentary on the boxing sequences; and excerpts from contemporary reviews. Most entries also summarize the making of the film, with particular attention to the training of the actors for the boxing scenes. The filmography also includes information on studio publicity releases and advertisements, press books and exhibitor campaign materials for each film.

Book excerpt: The remarkable story of two battalions, one German, one American, cut off in the same forest at the same time, and the heroic efforts to save them. The 1st Battalion, 141st Infantry ("Alamo Regiment"), had been cut off for six days and food, water, and ammunition were running out. Sent to rescue the "Texans" were the Japanese American Nisei of the famed "Go For Broke" 100/442d Regimental Combat Team. At virtually the same time, only five miles away, a similar drama unfolded as the Wehrmacht's 201st Mountain Battalion attempted an equally desperate rescue of its sister unit, the 202d Mountain Battalion. The weather was abysmal, the terrain virtually impassable. Some generals lost their sons there, other generals lost only their honor. Told by the soldiers, American and German, from both sides, Lost Battalions is an unforgettable account of courage, honor, and humanity.

Book Kill the Fuhrer

Download or read book Kill the Fuhrer written by Denis Rigden and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-11-08 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Second World War, Britain's top secret Special Operations Executive plotted to assassinate Hitler. A small department of SOE known as Section X had the tantalisingly complex task of investigating how, when and where their plan could be executed. The section also plotted the killing of Goebbels, Himmler and other selected members of Hitler's inner circle. Only Section X and a handful of other SOE staff had any knowledge of these projects, codenamed Operation Foxley and Operation Little Foxleys. As history has shown, these schemes turned out to be pipe dreams. Even so, Section X, renamed the German Directorate in 1944, made a huge contribution to the Allied war effort through their organised sabotage and clandestine distribution of black propaganda. Denis Rigden describes Section X's efforts to discover as much as possible about the intended assassination targets, and questions whether a successful Operation Foxley would have helped or hindered the Allied cause. Based on top secret documents and private sources and illustrated with archive photographs, 'Kill the Fuhrer' is an intriguing insight into the shadowy world of Britain's wartime secret services.
