Book Fidel Castro and Baseball

Download or read book Fidel Castro and Baseball written by Peter C. Bjarkman and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few political figures of the modern age have been so vilified as Fidel Castro, and both the vilification and worship generated by the Cuban leader have combined to distort the true image of Castro. The baseball myths attached to Fidel have loomed every bit as large as the skewed political notions that surround him. Castro was never a major league pitching prospect, nor did he destroy the Cuban national pastime in 1962. In Fidel Castro and Baseball: The Untold Story, Peter C. Bjarkman dispels numerous myths about the Cuban leader and his association with baseball. In this groundbreaking study, Bjarkman establishes how Fidel constructed, rather than dismantled, Cuba’s true baseball Golden Age—one that followed rather than preceded the 1959 revolution. Bjarkman also demonstrates that Fidel was not at all unique in “politicizing” baseball as often maintained, since the island sport traces its roots to the 19th-century revolution. Fidel’s avowed devotion to a non-materialist society would ultimately sow the seeds of collapse for the baseball empire he built over more than a half-century, just as the same obsession would finally dismantle the larger social revolution he had painstakingly authored. A fascinating look at a controversial figure and his impact on a major sport, this volume reveals many intriguing insights about Castro and how his love of the game was tied to Cuba’s identity. Fidel Castro and Baseball will appeal to fans of the sport as well as to those interested in Cuba’s enduring association with baseball.

Download or read book The Papers of Martin Luther King Jr Volume V written by Martin Luther King Jr. and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr. has become the definitive record of the most significant correspondence, sermons, speeches, published writings, and unpublished manuscripts of one of America's best-known advocates for peace and justice. Threshold of a New Decade, Volume V of the planned fourteen-volume series, illustrates the growing sophistication and effectiveness of King and the organizations he led while providing an unparalleled look into the surprising emergence of the sit-in protests that sparked the social struggles of the 1960s. During this pivotal period of his career, King traveled to India in early 1959 to meet with Prime Minister Nehru and other associates of Mahatma Gandhi. After returning to Montgomery, King confronted the continuing ineffectiveness of his Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) by demanding personnel changes and agreeing to relocate to Atlanta at the beginning of 1960. King's move took place just before African American students in the South reclaimed the energy of the Montgomery bus boycott with their bold sit-in protests, which King predicted would become "an integral part of the history which is reshaping the world, replacing a dying order with modern democracy." He was arrested in October after participating in a sit-in protest in Atlanta. His resulting imprisonment led presidential candidate John F. Kennedy to phone his sympathies to King's wife, Coretta, a move many credit for providing the margin of victory in the close election of 1960.

Book Bhabani Bhattachacharya His Vision And Themes

Download or read book Bhabani Bhattachacharya His Vision And Themes written by K.K. Sharma and published by Abhinav Publications. This book was released on 1979 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bhabani Bhatacharya Is Unquestionably One Of The Celebrated Indo English Fiction Writers. Notwithstanding His Rather Scanty Literary Output, He Has Caught The Fancy Of Quite A Large Reading Public And Academics Both At Home And Abroad. No Wonder, Then, If His Latest Novel, Shadow From Ladakh, Has Won For Him The Much Coveted Sahitya Akademi Award For 1967. Besides, He Is A Much-Translated Indian Novelist Writing In English. His Books Have Been Translated Into Twenty-Six Languages Including Fourteen European Languages. In Spite Of The Global Fame That Has Come To Him Spontaneously, He Has Not Yet Been Explored And Evaluated Thoroughly Well With The Empathy Of A Scholar. Only Two Full Length Studies And A Few Articles In Journals And Books Have Appeared On Him, And These, Too, Are Just An Introduction To His Writings, And Do Not Examine Comprehensively Either The Thematic Or The Technical Side Of His Fiction. Hence The Need And Justification For A Book Such As This. The Present Book Undertakes To Make A Thorough And Objective Study Of Bhabani Bhattacharya S Vision, His Dominant Themes And His Concept Of A Creative Writer S Concern With Social Reality. It Has Been My Sincere Endeavour To Make This Study Really Useful And Interesting For Scholars In General And For University Students In Particular. Since There Is A Paucity Of Critical Works On The Contemporary Indian Novelists Writing In English, The Book, It Is Hoped, Will Surely Help The Reader To Understand, And Develop Genuine Interest In, Bhabani Bhattacharya As Well As The Indo English Fiction Of The Recent Decades.

Book Solzhenitsyn s Traditional Imagination

Download or read book Solzhenitsyn s Traditional Imagination written by James M. Curtis and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most critics overlook the literary significance of Alexander Solzhenitsyn's work, focusing instead on biographical, political, and moral interpretations. This examination of Solzhenitsyn's major novels--One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch, The First Circle, Cancer Ward, and August 1914--emphasizes that his writings must be understood within the tradition of Russian literature and the context of Western culture. James M. Curtis provides a detailed analysis of Tolstoy's crucial influence on Solzhenitsyn, and he discusses at length Solzhenitsyn's relationship to Dostoyevsky, Leskov, Chekhov, and Zamyatin. Curtis also demonstrates that a study of Ernest Hemingway (whose books have been enormously popular in Russia) and Virginia Woolf can contribute to our understanding of the Russian novelist. Solzhenitsyn's Traditional Imagination includes a chapter on Dos Passos and Eisenstein whose work constituted Solzhenitsyn's first major artistic interest outside Russian literature. The chapter presents the first comprehensive examination of the importance of film for Solzhenitsyn and shows how he learned the use of film technique in literature from Dos Passos and how he adapted it from Eisenstein's films. This was the first full-length study to use Solzhenitsyn's revised editions of One Day . . ., The First Circle, and Cancer Ward (all published in 1978). Professor Curtis's careful use of the best available texts, together with his wide knowledge of contemporary literary criticism and his insistence upon Solzhenitsyn's purely literary importance, make this a valuable book for all students of Solzhenitsyn's fiction.
