Excerpt: ...for beauty and to adorn the face rather than for such uses. Below the nose is placed the mouth, with two functions: one being to speak, and the other to convey food whither it is needed. And being cut across the face it was next hemmed round by Nature with those two lips of finest coral, in the image of the margin of a fair fountain. It was dedicated by the ancients to Mentis, for here is the seat of tender kisses, apt to draw two souls in exchange out of one body into the sages have said that the laugh was nothing less than the radiance from the serenity of the soul, and thus it is most seemly in a noble and gentle lady (if we may believe Plato in his "Republic," as I do for my part), as a manifestation of her happiness, to laugh with modesty, severity and candour, without much motion of her body, in a low tone, and rarely rather than often. As doth that cousin of Selvaggia's, of whom you were disputing but just now. Verdespina. But your gossip, who often laughed, was praised for her laugh as much as for any other charm; and she had so many that in Prato she deservedly held the highest place above all other beauties. Celso. My gossip was so full of grace that if she had forever laughed she would forever have pleased. But this is not the case with all. Your Amaretta, who wrinkles her face when she laughs, if she laughed so often would not please so well, albeit she has the finest teeth. But there are certain graces which Heaven rarely vouchsafes here below and which fall on few. Hence laughter should be rare, for too much laughter is a sign of too great mirth, and a discreet lady cannot be too mirthful. Now Nature, knowing how much grace it would lend if she gave the bare teeth a little border about the roots, and how much charm...

Book excerpt: Is womanhood a glory? What saith the Scriptures about women? Like he made the sun and the moon, God so made the man and the woman. From their glory they fell, this we know. But to what glory has Christ redeemed them? Are they returned to their former glories or are they transformed into something else altogether? Or did they both become like the moon? Or did they both become like the sun?One thing that stands out in Scripture is that all instruction and admonishment to women was given by men. And not just mere men, but men of faith. The Scriptures call women not to look up to men but to men of faith---the sons of God. God refers to the woman as "the desire of a man's eyes." (Eze. 24:16,25) As the sun gives the light to the moon and the moon reflects the light of the sun, men gave women their sense of meaning. "For she was taken out of man" (Gen. 2:23, 1 Cor. 11:8). In one case a man passed on instruction--or an oracle to be exact--which he learned from his mother, the famous Proverbs 31 woman. From Adam to King Lemuel to Jeremiah to Jesus to Paul to Peter scriptural instruction was always from a man of faith. This is a bone of contention for feminists since they will point to exactly this as a proof that men have always been trying to control women. But closer study shows, overwhelmingly, that the Scriptures don't oppress the woman, they liberate and redeem her. It is the world and its tsunamis of social fashion, consumerism, temptations to wealth and power, idle comforts, and materialism that do the woman grave injustice--leaving her disillusioned and oppressed worse than ever, and ultimately buried in ignominy and sadness. Men who don't care that women are driving themselves into an abyss of self-destruction are the real misogynists. They are sons of the first Adam, enslaved to corruption. For over 15 years Matthew has ministered to men and women in the realm of a biblical understanding of sexual identity and purpose. Matthew holds a B.A., has done graduate work at Multnomah Biblical Seminary, and is the founder of The True Man Ministries (www.thetrueman.org) which is dedicated to rediscovering God's own heart and mind toward the man and woman and his great redemptive purpose in making them into his sons and daughters.

Book excerpt: What if the key to changing your life--and yourself--is already in your hand? So many women struggle with what to do with their daily lives. They feel trapped in everyday drudgery and disappointment, in dull domestic duties, and in mundane jobs they despise. Where is the abundant, purposeful life they were promised? Kari Patterson shows readers the truth: in each unremarkable life lies an opportunity to see, know, love, and be utterly transformed by a God who meets everyone right where they are. Instead of stepping away from real life to find God, Patterson equips women with a six-step practice to move further in and meet Him in the humdrum moments of everyday existence. And when a woman's inner being is truly changed by the sacred, everything in her world changes too--right down to tackling the dirty dishes. Through entertaining narrative, candid real-life stories, Bible study, and practical instruction, Sacred Mundane guides individuals or small groups to discover the beautiful sacredness in the lives they already lead. Women who long to grow in God and make a real difference in the world--no matter how small--will reach eagerly for this book and the radical transformation it offers. "Our daily routine, with its mundane tasks and mindless repetition, is ultimately an offering of worship to God. What a great truth from a great God!" --Ann Byle, author of The Making of a Christian Bestseller and coauthor of Devotions for the Soul Surfer

Book excerpt: A remarkable vision for how Christians can live with countercultural gentleness in a perpetually angry, attacking, outraged time. Wow! What a great book!" -- Max Lucado In a defensive and divided era, how can followers of Jesus reveal a better way of living, one that loves others as God loves us? How can Christians be the kind of people who are known, as Proverbs puts it, to "turn away wrath?" Scott Sauls's compelling new book shows Christians how to become people of "a gentle answer" in a politically, relationally, and culturally fractured world by helping readers: grow in affection for Christ, who answers our hostility with gentleness; nurture a renewed, softened heart in light of Christ's gentleness toward us; and catch a vision to forsake us-against-them mentalities, put down our swords, and "infect" a hostile world with gentleness. For those who long for a more civil way of being, A Gentle Answer reveals why answering hostility with gentleness is essential, how we can nurture our hearts to do so, and what a gentle answer looks like, both in the church and in the world. "A great, highly practical volume that points us to the tenderness of Jesus: 'a bruised reed he will not break'." -- Tim Keller, Pastor Emeritus, Redeemer Presbyterian Church, New York City "Wow! What a great book…. We will be better humans because of it." -- Max Lucado, bestselling author and pastor of Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas "Scott Sauls is the preeminent voice for fractured, polarized times…. Scott’s every word is read under our roof." -- Ann Voskamp, bestselling author of One Thousand Gifts and The Broken Way "This book could not have come at a better time, as we navigate a culture of polarization….This is a heart changing book!" -- Rebekah Lyons, bestselling author, Rhythms of Renewal and You are Free

Book excerpt: Christians know that God loves them, but can easily feel that he is perpetually disappointed and frustrated, maybe even close to giving up on them. As a result, they focus a lot—and rightly so—on what Jesus has done to appease God’s wrath for sin. But how does Jesus Christ actually feel about his people amid all their sins and failures? This book draws us to Matthew 11, where Jesus describes himself as “gentle and lowly in heart,” longing for his people to find rest in him. The gospel flows from God’s deepest heart for his people, a heart of tender love for the sinful and suffering. These chapters take readers into the depths of Christ’s very heart for sinners, diving deep into Bible passages that speak of who Christ is and encouraging readers with the affections of Christ for his people. His longing heart for sinners comforts and sustains readers in their up-and-down lives.
