Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genstat 5 Release 3 is the latest version of a popular statistical system that provides statistical summaries, analysis, data-handling, and graphics capabilities. Genstat--used worldwide on personal computers, workstations, and mainframe computers--has become the system of choice among many statisticians, researchers, and students across the many disciplines that use and apply statistics. This system guide has been rewritten for Release 3 and features new, example-rich chapters on basic statistics and on REML. It also clearly and practically details Release 3's many new capabilities, including the analysis of ordered categorical data, generalized additive models, combination of information in multi-stratum experimental designs, extensions to the REML (residual maximum-likelihood) algorithm, estimation of parameters of statistical distributions, further probability functions, simplified data input, and many new extensions for high resolution graphics, calculations, and manipulation. Both novices and seasoned users of Genstat will welcome this well-written, practical guide to Release 3.

Book Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting

Download or read book Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting written by Catherine Rich and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While certain ecological problems associated with artificial night lighting are widely known-for instance, the disorientation of sea turtle hatchlings by beachfront lighting-the vast range of influences on all types of animals and plants is only beginning to be recognized. From nest choice and breeding success of birds to behavioral and physiological changes in salamanders, many organisms are seriously affected by human alterations in natural patterns of light and dark. Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting is the first book to consider the environmental effects of the intentional illumination of the night. It brings together leading scientists from around the world to review the state of knowledge on the subject and to describe specific effects that have been observed across a full range of taxonomic groups, including mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, fishes, invertebrates, and plants. Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting provides a scientific basis to begin addressing the challenge of conserving the nighttime environment. It cogently demonstrates the vital importance of this until-now neglected topic and is an essential new work for conservation planners, researchers, and anyone concerned with human impacts on the natural world.

Book Heliothis Research Methods and Prospects

Download or read book Heliothis Research Methods and Prospects written by Myron P. Zalucki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heliothis ("Bull worm") species are one of the major pests of field crops worldwide, including sorghum, tomatoes, lettuce, and cotton. Pest problems have intensified over the years as the total area given to agricultural host plants has increased. This comprehensive text, written by experienced researchers, assembles biological and ecological research techniques and approaches to Heliothis management: from the fundamental question of defining genetic species to collecting, rearing, and sampling techniques for the construction of life tables; the measurement of predator impact and physiological development; the detection and measurement of behavior, migration, and diapause; population genetics and resistance. Approaches to modelling population dynamics are also explored. This book is intended for beginning research students as well as experienced workers. It will be a valuable reference for entomologists, population ecologists, and agronomists concerned with crop protection.

Book Root Demographics and Their Efficiencies in Sustainable Agriculture Grasslands and Forest Ecosystems

Download or read book Root Demographics and Their Efficiencies in Sustainable Agriculture Grasslands and Forest Ecosystems written by James E. Box Jr. and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Society of Root Research sponsored the Symposium "Root Demographics and Their Efficiencies in Sustainable Agriculture, GrassLands and Forest Ecosystems," July 14-18, 1996, at the Madren Conference Center, Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina, USA. The conference was a continuation of a series of international symposiums on root research held every three to four years. Symposiums have also been held twice in Vienna, Austria, and once in Uppsala, Sweden, and Almaty, Kazahkstan prior to the meeting at Clemson University. The sponsoring society has made a particular effort in these symposia to include root scientists from the former Soviet Union because of the importance of exchanging information on a worldwide basis. This symposium continued and promoted that effort by providing travel grants to several scientists from that region; however, funds for that purpose were limited. Therefore, in compiling these proceedings, a number of papers from scientists from the former Soviet Union and former Warsaw Pack countries have been included even though the scientists were not actually present for the SymPOSIum.

Book Advances in Botanical Research

Download or read book Advances in Botanical Research written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1997-01-10 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Articles in this volume analyze rapidly evolving approaches, many at the cusp of development, to research plant defense mechanisms, pathogen variability, and epidemiology. Jones and Jones focus on emerging patterns that key resistance genes encode or require leucine-rich repeat proteins. Holub and Beynon analyze associating host resistance specificity with a locus and whether a phenotype is due to single or multiple genes. Ashby combines biochemical, molecular, and classical plant pathology to analyze interactions and provide leads to novel control strategies. Heath and Skalamera question why fungal biotrophs form intracellular structures, the significance of ensuing cellular rearrangements and death of invaded resistant cells. Spencer-Phillips explores the roles of haustoria and intercellular hyphae in intercepting organic and inorganic nutrients from hosts.Chamberlain and Ingram compare pathogen asexual and sexual reproduction for generating genetic variation, physiological and fitness costs and trade-offs. Hardham and Hyde consider new knowledge of sporangiogenesis and zoospore production in oomycetes. Dewey et al. analyze recent advances in accurately enumerating pathogens in soil. Wistemeyer et al. consider opportunities for horizontal gene transfer amongst microbes and plants in soil. Irwin et al. discuss origins of genetic variationof Phytophthora pathogens of pasture legumes. Rodriguez and Redman show how prominent pathogens which also behave as endophytes or saprophytes may influence plant community structure and dynamics. Haubold and Rainey challenge us to consider geneticvariation in plant-colonizing bacterial populations. Milgroom and Fry demonstrate that the practical need to understand pathogen variation is the most significant application of population genetics to disease management.

Book Combined Stresses in Plants

Download or read book Combined Stresses in Plants written by Ramamurthy Mahalingam and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unique responses of plants to combined stresses have been observed at physiological, biochemical, and molecular levels. This book provides an analysis of all three levels of change in various plants in response to different combinations of stresses. The text provides a general review of the combined stress paradigm, focuses on the impact of higher CO2 levels in combination with other stresses, examines drought stress in conjunction with other abiotic factors in different crop plants as well as the combination of biotic and abiotic factors, and discusses the impact of combined stresses in forest ecosystems. Written by experts in the field, Combined Stresses in Plants: Physiological, Molecular, and Biochemical Aspects is a valuable resource for scientists, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows alike working in plant stresses.
