Book excerpt: Linguists and philosophers have attempted different theoretical models to formalize the structural properties and the various uses of the genitives. Consequently, a large number of works listing the different uses of genitives are attested in different languages of the world. The works done from diachronic perspectives are as interesting and open as those done from synchronic perspectives. However, in spite of the attention that the issue of genitives has received in the linguistics tradition, the issue remains open. I have attempted to examine Hindi genitives from the point of view of their treatment in ancient traditional grammars in Indian and Westerns grammatical traditions as well as the way they have been approached in the modern linguistics theories. I have briefly outlined the approaches that ancient grammarians took with regards to the forms and functions of the genitive constructions. In this context, I have cited both Indian and Western grammarians. In the modern linguistics approaches, I discuss works of traditional Hindi grammarians and modern generative linguists. I have specially taken the core assumptions of Chomskyan Case Theory within the principles and Parameters framework of linguistics to examine the internal structure and the syntactic operations within the genitive constructions in Hindi.

Book excerpt: This book studies the nouns at their syntactic level and compares their internal structure with that of the verbs. The major part of the book is drawn from my doctoral work on the structure of the Hindi nouns within the theoretical approach of determiner phrase analysis in the generative linguistics framework. The book investigates the structure of the nominal phrase in Hindi under the theoretical assumptions that nouns and verbs parallel in their internal structure. That is, nouns and verbs and for that matter other words, that either associate with the nouns or the verbs, are identical inside, in their internal world. This assumption has been called determiner phrase analysis of the nominal elements in the existing literature (Abney 1987). I draw upon evidence from the different phenomena of the nominal phrases, such as the genitive constructions, (in)definiteness, focus and topic inside them, displacement phenomenon within the noun and the gerund constructions. The study is reported in three chapters.

This book was released on 1971 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of the transformational approach to the theory of language structure in the past decade has stimulated new ways of looking at a number of linguistic questions. One such important area may be considered the comparative study of the surface structure behaviour of substantive universals. This book seeks to provide an account of the structure of the noun phrase in English and Hindi within such a framework.

Book Non nominative Subjects

Download or read book Non nominative Subjects written by Peri Bhaskararao and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004-09-30 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1 of Non-nominative Subjects (NNSs) presents the most recent research on this topic from a wide range of languages from diverse language families of the world, with ample data and in-depth analysis. A significant feature of these volumes is that authors with different theoretical perspectives study the intricate questions raised by these constructions. Some of the central issues include the subject properties of noun phrases with ergative, dative, accusative and genitive case, case assignment and checking, anaphor–antecedent coreference, the nature of predicates with NNSs, whether they are volitional or non-volitional, possibilities of control coreference and agreement phenomena. These analyses have significant implications for theories of syntax and verbal semantics, first language acquisition of NNSs, convergence of case marking patterns in language contact situations, and the nature of syntactic change.

Book From Case to Adposition

Download or read book From Case to Adposition written by Vít Bubeník and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the historical development of many languages of the IE phylum the loss of inflectional morphology led to the development of a configurational syntax, where syntactic position marked syntactic role. The first of these configurations was the adposition (preposition or postposition), which developed out of the uninflected particle/preverbs in the older forms of IE, by forming fixed phrases with nominal elements, a pattern later followed in the development of a configurational NP (article + nominal) and VP (auxiliary + verbal). The authors follow this evolution through almost four thousand years of documentation in all twelve language families of the Indo-European phylum, noting the resemblances between the structure of the original IE case system and the systemic oppositions to be found in the sets of adpositions that replaced it. Quite apart from its theoretical analyses and proposals which in themselves amount to a new look at many traditional problems, this study has a value in the collected store of information on cases, and on adpositions and their usage. There is also a considerable store of etymological information that is relevant to the description of the systemic development.
