Download or read book The Genetics of Cattle 2nd Edition written by Dorian Garrick and published by CABI. This book was released on 2014-11-28 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the time of domestication more than 10,000 years ago, cattle have played an increasingly crucial role in the development of human civilizations. Progress has been quite remarkable since the turn of the century; the sequencing of the bovine genome in 2009 launched new avenues for furthering our understanding of theoretical and practical aspects of cattle genetics. Covering a vast array of questions, this book reviews major topics from molecular and developmental genetics, disease resistance and immunogenetics to genetic improvement of dairy and beef breeds, addressing all current problems in the field. This second edition includes a new team of authors and completely new chapters on the genetics of fat production, nutrition, feed intake and efficiency, growth and body composition. Fully updated throughout, it provides a valuable resource on cattle genetics for researchers, breeders, veterinarians and postgraduate students.

Book Breeding for Robustness in Cattle

Download or read book Breeding for Robustness in Cattle written by Marija Klopčič and published by Brill Wageningen Academic. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has revealed unfavourable trends in e.g. fertility, udder health and locomotion in some major dairy cattle breeds due to a large increase in production and insufficient consideration of functional traits in the breeding goals. Such unfavourable trends in some functional traits increase costs. Additionally, the enlargement of herds leads to less available labour time per individual cow. This asks for cows that are easy to handle. At the same time, society is demanding a higher welfare standard of animals. These contradicting developments have increased the desire for so called more robust animals. Robustness can be defined as 'the ability to maintain homeostasis in commonly accepted and sustainable herds of the near future'; or 'the ability of the cow to function well in the environment she lives in as well as in a wide range of climates and production systems'. This book contains a series of articles (26) dealing with the concept of robustness, including aspects like evolution, genetics, environment, animal health and welfare, and integrity. Besides the major functional traits also the links to energy balance, hot climatic conditions, and the attitude and input of stakeholders towards robustness as part of the breeding program are discussed. This book is the first attempt to summarise the available knowledge concerning this topic in cattle, making this book unique. The contributions are from authors of 16 countries from all over the world. However, the focus is presently on farm animal level, while in future robustness of the whole production system may also require additional attention.

Book Breeding Genetics and Safety Production of Dairy Cattle

Download or read book Breeding Genetics and Safety Production of Dairy Cattle written by Zhi Chen and published by Mdpi AG. This book was released on 2023-08-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The integration of various omics information-such as DNA, RNA, protein, and epigenetic regulation-brings new opportunities for the mining of important economic traits of animals and the analysis of molecular genetic mechanisms. Over the last three decades, world milk production has increased by more than 59%, from 530 million tonnes to 843 million tonnes. However, the genetic mechanisms behind milk fat traits remain largely undetermined. Milk is rich in fatty acids, proteins, and eight essential amino acids needed by the human body. The fatty acids in milk, namely, dodecylic acid, myristic acid, stearic acid, and palmitic acid, are the main energy substances in the human body, accounting for approximately 5, 10, 8, and 27 % of total fatty acids, respectively. Thus, decoding the genetics of milk fat traits can have a potential impact on product development, international trade, and consumption of milk components. This Special Issue focuses on applying the aforementioned advances to explore gene regulation and its molecular mechanisms in milk fat traits. The topics include but are not limited to: Research and application surrounding the genetic basis of important milk fat traits; Mining and function of excellent genetic resources for milk fat traits; Genetics of nutrition metabolism regulation and efficient production of milk fat; Epigenetic research on genes implicated in milk fat traits; High-throughput sequencing research surrounding genetics of milk fat traits; Construction of gene (including circRNA, lincRNA, miRNA, and mRNA) expression regulatory network maps.

Book Genetic and Phenotypic Parameters of Profit Functions Reproductive Efficiencies in Crossbred Cattle

Download or read book Genetic and Phenotypic Parameters of Profit Functions Reproductive Efficiencies in Crossbred Cattle written by C. O. Reddy and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations were carried out to study the relationship of profit function, life production and herd life with reproductive variables and to study the relationship between first lactation and lifetime performance and to estimate the economic returns on the basis of first lactation performance. The least square analysis showed that the differences between the two genetic groups (higher and lower crosses) were significant for all the production and profit traits. Similarly the genetic group did not show significant differences in reproductive raits viz., number of inseminations per conception (1.69 and 1.74), firsst calving interval (423 and 426 days), days open percent (36.66 and 37.13) and weight at first calving (306 and 384 kg). Based on profit per day of lif an open period of 135 days in higher crosses and 134 days in lower crosses were found to be satisfactory. The days dry were optimised at 34.22 percent 26.98 percent, 20.22 percent, 24.84 percent and 24.11 percent, for hrd life, lifetime milk yield, milk yield per day of herd life, lifetime profit and profit per day of herd life in higher crosse, respectively. It was also observed that, one standard deviation decrease in mean days dry percent could maximise all the lifetime production traits in lower crosses. Long herd life was found to be necessary for maximum profit and profit per day of herd life. The age at first calving accounted for little in all the lifetime traits in both higher and lower crosses (3.11 to 5.54 percent and 0.07 to 2.11 percent). Similar observations were made with the weight at first calving. Herd life increased gradually upto first lactation (2500 kg) in lower crosses and 3000 kg in higher crosses. Increase in first lactation increased the lifetime traits. The genetic correlations between first lactation traits and lifetime traits were higher in higher crosses. Th phenotypic corrlations among lifetime traits were positive and significant except the correlations of days dry percent with other lifetime traits.

Book Genomic Characterisation and Polymorphism Analysis of Candidate Genes for Milk Production Traits and Association Studies in Three Cattle Breeds

Download or read book Genomic Characterisation and Polymorphism Analysis of Candidate Genes for Milk Production Traits and Association Studies in Three Cattle Breeds written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decades, various mapping experiments resulted in the detection of several markers affecting milk production traits on bovine chromosome 6. The aim of this study was to identify causative polymorphisms of milk traits using a multiple breed approach. Six selected candidate genes on chromosome 6 in cattle were characterised and screened for polymorphisms. Following this, 50 polymorphisms were genotyped in sires of German Brown, Fleckvieh and German Holstein for investigation in association studies with milk production traits. In particular, associated polymorphisms were obtained for fat- and protein yield. However, since polymorphisms were associated depending on breed, gene and trait under consideration, the causality of associated polymorphisms could not be confirmed.
