The major breeds and types relevant to the tropics are described in terms of the main biological characteristics that affect productivity. Also examined are the techniques required in applying the principles of genetics, nutrition, disease prevention, and economics to sheep production systems.

Book Sheep Production in the Tropics and Sub tropics

Download or read book Sheep Production in the Tropics and Sub tropics written by Ruth M. Gatenby and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ex-Libris. Usual Library Markings With No Underlining And Highlighting. Sheep Have Traditionally Formed An Important Part Of The Economy In Much Of The Tropics And Sub-Tropics, But It Is Only In Recent Years That Scientists Have Begun To Recognize Their True Value, Not Only For Their Ability To Convert Low Quality Vegetation Into Tangible Products Such As Meat, Wool, Milk, Skin, And Manure, But Also As A Capital Store In Societies Where Grazing Land Is Communally Owned And Banking Facilities Are Few And Unreliable. With The Increasing Awareness Of The Importance Of The Sheep, Development Projects Aimed At Improving The Standard Of Living Of The Rural Poor Are Now Focusing On Sheep Because, Unlike Larger Ruminants, Sheep Are Owned By The Poorer Sectors Of These Societies. Until Now There Has Been A Marked Gap In The Literature For A Textbook On Tropical Sheep Production For Agriculture And Veterinary Students. This Book Fills That Gap, Providing An Introduction To Breeds Of Sheep In The Tropics, Their Genetics And Environmental Physiology And Covering Such Important Topics As Management, Health, Nutrition, Feeding And Reproduction; Products And Systems Of Production; Products And Systems Of Production; Sociological And Economic Aspects Of Production; And Possible Improvements. The Book Also Contains A Glossary, A Substatial List Of Breed Names And Descriptions, And Over 1,000 References.

Keeping poultry contributes substantially to household food security throughout the developing world. One of the principal constraints to increasing small-scale poultry production is Newcastle Disease. This acute viral disease can typically kill up to 80 percent of unprotected poultry in rural areas and is found throughout the developing world. This technology review presents the latest understanding of Newcastle Disease, its characteristics, epidemiology, symptoms, and control. It will be of practical value to state and private veterinarians, and to all those involved with rural poultry production who wish to control this disease.

This book was released on 2021-07-21 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastoral systems have evolved to function with the natural environment and therefore with variability. By identifying variability as an entry point, this paper aims at (i) engaging FAO in the mainstreaming of pastoralism by establishing the understanding of pastoralism, and its systematic inclusion in the normal operations of FAO, and at (ii) presenting an evidence based narrative on pastoralism to a specialists’ audience. Two main points are made in this document: First, pastoral systems are emblematic of farming with nature. Second, pastoral systems make use of variability in inputs (the environment) by matching it with variability in their own operational processes (flexibility in movements, animal breeds, labour force, etc.) in such a way as to reduce the variability in outputs (animal production and health, household’s food security, etc). Since 2015, the Pastoralist Knowledge Hub (PKH) has helped creating an institutional space for connecting and coordinating work on pastoralism within FAO. An Inter-Departmental Working Group on Pastoralism has been formed. The conceptual framework of this paper and early versions have benefited from comments and guidance of FAO staff as well as of specialists of pastoralism worldwide.

This publication considers key policy issues and trends involved in attempts to improve the livelihoods of pastoralist families and communities.

Book Mulberry for Animal Production

Download or read book Mulberry for Animal Production written by Manuel D. Sanchez and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mulberry, the feed of silkworm, was one of the first domesticated forages in the world and has been the subject of intensive research over the last few decades. Its intensive cultivation and use specifically for animal production only started during the last two decades. This publication presents a number of articles given at the first electronic conference on mulberry for animal production, held during 2000. This conference was organised in response to the growing interest in the cultivation and use of mulberry to feed various domestic animals. Issues discussed include: germplasm resources in various countries, agronomic aspects, chemical composition, nutritive value and animal performance.
