Book Genetic and Molecular analysis of yield and physiological traits in three line hybrids in rice Oryza sativa L under aerobic condition

Download or read book Genetic and Molecular analysis of yield and physiological traits in three line hybrids in rice Oryza sativa L under aerobic condition written by Sathya Ramalingam and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2012-11-27 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2012 in the subject Biology - Genetics / Gene Technology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (Madurai Agricultural College and Research Institute), course: Ph.D, language: English, abstract: An investigation in rice (Oryza sativa L.) was carried out subjecting six ‘lines’ and 15 ‘testers’ crossed in a Line x Tester mating design to estimate gene action, combining ability and heterosis for yield and drought tolerant traits under aerobic condition. The 21 parents were also surveyed using SSR markers. From the Line x Tester analysis, the hybrids exhibited significant variation among themselves for all the characters studied under aerobic condition. The study of gene action for drought tolerance and yield component traits revealed that all the traits exhibited dominant gene action which was predominant. Therefore, to harness the dominant gene effects, either heterosis breeding or selection at later generations would be an appropriate breeding methodology. Based on the per se performance of lines and testers, the following parents i.e., IR79128A (L1), IR79156A (L2), COMS14A (L5), COMS24A (L6), IR 80286-22-3-6-1R (T3) and IR7925A-428-2-1-1R (T4) were adjudged as the best parents and crosses involving them would be expected to throw desirable segregants for both yield and drought tolerant traits under aerobic condition. Based on the gca effects, the parents IR79128A (L1), IR70369A (L4), IR79156A (L2), BI-33 (T15), IR79582-21-2-2-1R (T5), KMP-105 (T11), T1 (IR 69726-29-1-2-2R) and MAS - 946-1 (T9) were the best general combiners and the crosses involving them would result in the identification of superior segregants with favourable genes for both drought and yield. Out of 21 parents evaluated based on per se and gca effects, three ‘lines’ viz., IR79128A (L1), IR79156A (L2) and IR70369A (L4) and three ‘testers’ viz., IR7925A-428-2-1-1R (T11), KMP -148 (T12) and BI-33 (T15) were identified as the best genotypes which will be utilized in further breeding programmes as parents for improvement of yield and drought tolerance under aerobic conditions. The cross combination IR70369A / MAS -26 (L4 x T10) was identified as the best for recombination breeding to get desirable segregants for yield and drought tolerant traits under aerobic conditions. The cross combinations viz., IR70369A / IR 7925A-428-2-1-1R (L4 x T4) and IR70369A / KMP-105 (L4 x T11) had high per se, sca effects and standard heterosis for drought tolerant and yield traits under aerobic conditions.

Book Rice Improvement

Download or read book Rice Improvement written by Jauhar Ali and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-05 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. By 2050, human population is expected to reach 9.7 billion. The demand for increased food production needs to be met from ever reducing resources of land, water and other environmental constraints. Rice remains the staple food source for a majority of the global populations, but especially in Asia where ninety percent of rice is grown and consumed. Climate change continues to impose abiotic and biotic stresses that curtail rice quality and yields. Researchers have been challenged to provide innovative solutions to maintain, or even increase, rice production. Amongst them, the ‘green super rice’ breeding strategy has been successful for leading the development and release of multiple abiotic and biotic stress tolerant rice varieties. Recent advances in plant molecular biology and biotechnologies have led to the identification of stress responsive genes and signaling pathways, which open up new paradigms to augment rice productivity. Accordingly, transcription factors, protein kinases and enzymes for generating protective metabolites and proteins all contribute to an intricate network of events that guard and maintain cellular integrity. In addition, various quantitative trait loci associated with elevated stress tolerance have been cloned, resulting in the detection of novel genes for biotic and abiotic stress resistance. Mechanistic understanding of the genetic basis of traits, such as N and P use, is allowing rice researchers to engineer nutrient-efficient rice varieties, which would result in higher yields with lower inputs. Likewise, the research in micronutrients biosynthesis opens doors to genetic engineering of metabolic pathways to enhance micronutrients production. With third generation sequencing techniques on the horizon, exciting progress can be expected to vastly improve molecular markers for gene-trait associations forecast with increasing accuracy. This book emphasizes on the areas of rice science that attempt to overcome the foremost limitations in rice production. Our intention is to highlight research advances in the fields of physiology, molecular breeding and genetics, with a special focus on increasing productivity, improving biotic and abiotic stress tolerance and nutritional quality of rice.

Book excerpt: This book presents a wealth of both general and specific information about rice. The first section outlines the distribution and mutual relationships of various types of rice with special attention to the adaptive strategy of wild and cultivated rice, and to the relationships between different ecotypes and their adaptation to low temperature, different photoperiods or different humidities. The section on rice morpho-physiology compares the characteristics of rice and dry land crops and different ecotypes with regard to seed dormancy and germination; describes the important steps in the photosynthetic structure process and its adjustment to the course of evolution of cultivated rice; studies the root and nutrient uptake and the responses to hormones in terrestrial and aquatic plants; considers the reproductive nature in relation to tolerance to environmental stress; and discusses the morphological characteristics of rice panicle in relation to grain filling, sink-source balance and variation in yield components of panicle structure. The last section reviews the genetics of rice and includes new findings on chromosomal analysis, cytoplasmic analysis and gene analysis and reviews recent achievements in tissue culture and genetic engineering techniques. The book is authoritative, well-documented and international in scope. It presents new and useful information of direct use to rice research workers and students, and of interest to crop physiologists, agronomists, plant physiologists and breeders throughout the world.

Book Morpho physiological Yield and Genetic Characterization of Indica Rice Oryza Sativa L Genotypes for Salinity and Drought Tolerance

Download or read book Morpho physiological Yield and Genetic Characterization of Indica Rice Oryza Sativa L Genotypes for Salinity and Drought Tolerance written by Naqeebullah Naqeebullah and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The occurrence of phenotypic and genotypic diversity is the key factor in crop improvement including abiotic stress tolerance. The focal objectives of this study were to evaluate and characterize 74 tropical indica rice breeding lines for phenotypic and genotypic diversity, screening for the most devastating abiotic stresses in rice; drought and salinity at the seedling stage at morpho-physiological and molecular levels. To fulfill these objectives, five studies were conducted in pots; first two experiments aimed at assessing phenotypic and yield variability at seedling and maturity stages respectively; based on several (more than 20) root and shoot traits which exploited a wide range of variability among genotypes for measured traits. Germplasm was then screened for drought stress at two moister regimes, 50%, and 100% moisture levels, under mini-hoop structures. Nine percent of the genotypes exhibited a high tolerance to drought stress, and genotypes IR86638 and IR49830 were identified as the most and least drought tolerant respectively. Germplasm was also screened for salinity tolerance in pure sand pot-culture (a simple, efficient and alternate screening method) at three levels; high salt stress (EC 12 dSm-1), moderate salt stress (EC 6 dSm-1), and control imposed one week after emergence. Thirteen genotypes (17.57%) were identified as highly salt tolerant; genotypes FED 473 and IR85427 were highly salt tolerant and salt sensitive, respectively. Root traits were found more crucial and best descriptors in identifying both salinity and drought tolerant genotypes. Genotypes were further used in Genome-wide Association Study (GWAS) to uncover important SNPs, QTLs or genes related to salinity tolerance. A higher number of significant SNPs were discovered for root traits, indicting the importance of root traits in identifying abiotic stress tolerance in rice. The knowledge gained from this investigation could be useful in breeding for better crop establishment, yield improvement, screening for any abiotic stress tolerance.

Book Broadening the Genetic Base of Grain Cereals

Download or read book Broadening the Genetic Base of Grain Cereals written by Mohar Singh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers comprehensive coverage of important grain cereals including their origin and distribution, crop gene pool, level of diversity, production constraints, traits of importance for genetic base widening, crop improvement methodologies, genome mapping, genomics for breeding, and future strategies. The chapters, contributed by eminent crop researchers from around the world, provide rare insights into the crop-specific constraints and prospects drawing from their substantial experience. As such, the book offers an essential source of information for grain cereals scientists, teachers, students, policy planners and developmental experts alike. Grain cereals, which comprise rice, wheat, maize, barley, oats, sorghum and millets, are members of the grass family. These crops are vital to human nutrition, thanks to their roles as staple food crops in different parts of the globe. Some of them are rich sources of carbohydrates, which provide energy, while others are important sources of minerals, vitamins and proteins, in addition to their medicinal properties. In most cereals, the existing variability among elite germplasm has been exploited to attain a desirable level of productivity. However, to make further breakthroughs in enhancing yield and improving stability in future crop cultivars, new sources of genes/alleles need to be identified in wild/weedy species and incorporated into the cultivated varieties. Though there have been many publications on various aspects of grain cereal improvement in the recent past, to date this essential information has remained scattered among different periodicals.
