Book Genetic Diversity Phenotypic Stability In Crop Plants

Download or read book Genetic Diversity Phenotypic Stability In Crop Plants written by S. Thirugnanakumar and published by New India Publishing Agency. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic diversity plays an important role in crop evolution. Assessing diversity by morphometric through classical plant breeding is very much useful to study the crop evolution and to identify suitable parents for developing superior progenies. The genetically diverse parents will show high combining ability resulting in high heterosis in F1 generation and throw some useful segregants in the F2 and in later segregating generations too. Genetic diversity has been classically measured with Mahalanobis’ D2 method. Diversity analysis over season and environments also gives useful information in identification of suitable parents. The consistent genetic diversity over seasons and environments would be useful in practical plant breeding. Further, genetic diversity has also being measured with molecular markers to avoid environmental interaction. The book carries useful information on genetic diversity and phenotypic stability among various field and horticultural crops for the researches who involved in crop improvement program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the last eighteen years we have been deeply involved in a cooperative effort with our Latin American colleagues in genetics, biochemistry, physiology, and molecular biology. We have been in close contact with scientists in a number of centers and have helped to organize symposia, workshops, and so forth, in an effort to accelerate their development and make their substantial work known. These symposia in Latin America have been quite successful. The fifteenth will take place in Brasilia in 1977. At the request of colleagues, we are in the process of developing a similar series in Asia. The first very successful symposium was held in Calcutta in 1973. We were most pleased when Dr. Amir Muhammed, Vice Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Lyallpur suggested that we hold a symposium on a topic of great importance to Pakistan, Genetic Control of Diversity in Plants, under the auspices of the University of Agriculture. It is our hope that this symposium will be followed by additional ones in Pakistan as well as in other countries in the Far East. Leadership is quickly developing in the hands of outstanding scientists in these countries, and we appreciate the opportunity to cooperate with them. We are especially grateful to the Natiohal Science Foundation for makingPL- 480 funds available which made this symposium possible.

Book Quantitative and Ecological Aspects of Plant Breeding

Download or read book Quantitative and Ecological Aspects of Plant Breeding written by J. Hill and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latest figures suggest that approximately 20% of the world's population of six billion is malnourished because of food shortages and inadequate distrib ution systems. To make matters worse, it is estimated that some 75 billion metric tons of soil are removed annually from the land by wind and soil ero sion, much of it from agricultural land, which is thereby rendered unsuitable for agricultural purposes. Moreover, out of a total land area under cultivation 9 6 of approximately 1. 5 x 10 ha, some 12 x 10 ha of arable land are destroyed and abandoned worldwide each year because of unsustainable agricultural practices. Add to this the fact that the world population is increasing at the rate of a quarter of a million per day, and the enormity of the task ahead becomes apparent. To quote the eminent wheat breeder E. R. Sears, It seems clear that plant geneticists can look forward to an expanded role in the 21st century, particularly in relation to plant improvement. The suc cess of these efforts may go a long way towards determining whether the world's increasing billions of humans will be adequately fed. Food for an ever-increasing population will have to be produced not only from an ever-diminishing, but from what will become an ever-deteriorating land resource unless justifiable environmental concerns are taken into account.

Book Mutagenesis exploring genetic diversity of crops

Download or read book Mutagenesis exploring genetic diversity of crops written by N.B. Tomlekova and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-04 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present era various international organizations, such as FAO, UNO, IAEA, FNCA, etc., have unanimously agreed that millions of people in both developing and developed countries are not only facing a shortage of food, but also non-availability of nutrients. The main reason put forward by these agencies is that there is less genetic diversity prevalent in the major crops, which has been further diminished since the inception of conventional plant breeding. Since the first decade of the last century the mutation breeding approach has been pivotal in enhancing the genetic diversity of crops, thereby enriching the genetic pool. ‘Mutagenesis: exploring genetic diversity of crops’ describes the latest achievements in mutation breeding, with a particular focus on the development of novel mutant varieties and F1 hybrids of crops highly superior to the parental ones. The book details experimental as well as literary studies of induced mutagenesis and its role in developing the new potent varieties. The book will be useful for agricultural policy making authorities in countries of agricultural importance, scientific researchers, breeders, teachers and students keen to use mutation breeding and to explore its hidden potential to secure food and nutrient availability for the growing world population.
