Book Molecular Genetics in Fisheries

Download or read book Molecular Genetics in Fisheries written by Gary R. Carvalho and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic principle of all molecular genetic methods is to employ inherited, discrete and stable markers to identify genotypes that characterize individuals, populations or species. Such genetic data can provide information ori the levels and distribution of genetic variability in relation to mating patterns, life history, population size, migration and environment. Although molecular tools have long been employed to address various questions in fisheries biology and management, their contributions to the field are sometimes unclear, and often controversial. Much of the initial impetus for the deployment of molecular markers arose from the desire to assess fish stock structure based on various interpretations of the stock concept. Although such studies have met with varying success, they continue to provide an impetus for the development of increasingly sensitive population discriminators, yielding information that can be valuable for both sustainable exploitation and the conservation of fish populations. In the last major synthesis of the subject, Ryman and Utter (1987) summarized progress and applications, though this was prior to the wide-scale adoption of DNA methodology. New sources of genetic markers and protocols are now available, in particular those that exploit the widely distributed and highly variable repeat sequences of DNA, and the amplification technique of the polymerase chain reaction.

Book Comparison of Wild and Hatchery Brook Trout in Spruce Flats Branch Great Smoky Mountains National Park Classic Reprint

Download or read book Comparison of Wild and Hatchery Brook Trout in Spruce Flats Branch Great Smoky Mountains National Park Classic Reprint written by W. Douglas Harned and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparison of Wild and Hatchery Brook Trout in Spruce Flats Branch, Great Smoky Mountains National Park The original range of the brook trout in the streams of the southern Appalachians extended from about 610 meters ft.) elevation to the head waters. King (1937) felt their lower limit depended to a large degree on the temperature of the water. This in turn depended on the direction and degree of slope, type of forest cover, and the nature and density of the vegetation immediately adjoining the stream banks. Book Brook Trout of Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Download or read book Brook Trout of Great Smoky Mountains National Park written by Robert E. Lennon and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brook trout of Great Smoky Mountains National Park are relatively scarce and are found only in remote, headwater streams. They are also small and short-lived. Males outnumber females, especially among sexually mature fish. The fecundity is lower than in fish of comparable size in Wisconsin and Canadian waters. Under present conditions, any increase in exploitation of the brook trout in the Park or damaging alteration of the habitat might have serious consequences for the remanent populations.

Book Biological Resources of Water

Download or read book Biological Resources of Water written by Sajal Ray and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-04-25 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is divided into two sections and represents the current trend of research in aquatic bioresource. In the section "Biology, Ecology and Physiological Chemistry", high-impact articles are contributed on reproduction, population genetics, evolution, biodiversity, biology and ecology of different aquatic faunas. Physiological chemistry of lipid, bioactive pharmaceuticals and chemical ecological aspects of aquatic organisms were discussed. In the section entitled "Conservation and Sustainable Management", authors highlighted conservation- and management-related issues of various bioresources in different regions of the earth. The book mentions the biological, ecological, physiological and genetic significance of aquatic organisms with resource potential. The authors stressed on rational utilisation and management of bioresource ensuring minimal damage of the aquatic ecosystem. This book would provide a direction towards sustainable ecological management of bioresource.

Book Changes in Distribution of Trout in Great Smoky Mountains National Park 1900 1977

Download or read book Changes in Distribution of Trout in Great Smoky Mountains National Park 1900 1977 written by George Alan Kelly and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant changes have occurred in the distribution of trout in streams of Great Smoky Mountains National Park since 1900. By the mid-1970's the original range of the native brook trout had been reduced by about 70% and the species was relegated to suboptimal habitat in head water streams. Most of the stream sections lost by brook trout became the territory of the introduced rainbow trout, which in 1977 occupied about 80% of the Park waters. After 1950, brown trout introduced in State waters outside the Park established reproducing populations in some 50 miles of stream formerly occupied only by rainbow trout. If current trends continue, the recovery of brook trout in Park water may be difficult, if not impossible, and brown trout may occupy much of the territory now held by rainbow trout.

Book Ecosystem Management for Sustainability

Download or read book Ecosystem Management for Sustainability written by John Peine and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-06-23 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the 21st century approaches, the need to put principles of sustainable living and ecosystem management into practice has never been so urgent. Ecosystem Management for Sustainability recognizes this need and shares the experiences of the editor and 54 contributing authors, each leaders in the advancement of ecosystem management and champions of the natural environment. The book uses the Man And Biosphere program as a case example of a wide variety of resource management activities at work. Through the multi-authored contributions to this book, documentation of a comprehensive spectrum of ecosystem management and sustainable development principles is achieved. Ecosystem Management for Sustainability provides a link between theory and practice of these two philosophies.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brook Trout of Great Smoky Mountains National Park Stocking of rainbow trout began soon after 1900 and became frequent and heavy after 1910 in every major stream in the Great Smoky Mountains Much of this stocking was done by logging companies The species has thrived and moved upstream and into tributary waters In some virgin wilderness areas of the Park, the rainbow invaded brook trout habitat and the native species became reduced in numbers and range (king.
