Book Breeding for robustness in cattle

Download or read book Breeding for robustness in cattle written by Marija Klopcic and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-04 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has revealed unfavourable trends in e.g. fertility, udder health and locomotion in some major dairy cattle breeds due to a large increase in production and insufficient consideration of functional traits in the breeding goals. Such unfavourable trends in some functional traits increase costs. Additionally, the enlargement of herds leads to less available labour time per individual cow. This asks for cows that are easy to handle. At the same time, society is demanding a higher welfare standard of animals. These contradicting developments have increased the desire for so called more robust animals. Robustness can be defined as 'the ability to maintain homeostasis in commonly accepted and sustainable herds of the near future'; or 'the ability of the cow to function well in the environment she lives in as well as in a wide range of climates and production systems'. This book contains a series of articles (26) dealing with the concept of robustness, including aspects like evolution, genetics, environment, animal health and welfare, and integrity. Besides the major functional traits also the links to energy balance, hot climatic conditions, and the attitude and input of stakeholders towards robustness as part of the breeding program are discussed. This book is the first attempt to summarise the available knowledge concerning this topic in cattle, making this book unique. The contributions are from authors of 16 countries from all over the world. However, the focus is presently on farm animal level, while in future robustness of the whole production system may also require additional attention.

This book was released on 1981 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objectives of the present study are: to investigate differences between the native goat in Venezuela and its crosses with Nubian Alpine, and Toggeburg breeds and attempt to identify and measure genetic sources of the differences; to study the degree of importance of environmental effects on productive and reproductive traits of the local breed and its crosses; to make recommendations on the orientation for genetic improvement of the local in Venezuela.

Book Evaluation of Functional Traits in Karan Fries Cows

Download or read book Evaluation of Functional Traits in Karan Fries Cows written by Balasundaram Balakrishnan and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Functional traits are the characters of an animal which increase the efficiency not by higher output of product but by reduced cost of input. Udder and reproductive disorders are the imperative functional traits which causes major losses in milk production. Reproduction disorders affect the herd life, reproductive efficiency of cows and are responsible for removal of the cow from the herd. Crossbred cows appear to be more prone to infections and disorders as compared to indigenous breeds. Karan Fries cow is a crossbred of Holstein Friesian and Tharparkar (India) developed at National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, India. Incidence of abortion, still birth, dystocia, retained foetal membrane, metritis, endometritis, anoestrus, repeat breeding, pyometra and other reproductive disorders in Karan Fries cows were evaluated. Production and reproduction performance traits were found to be influenced by reproductive disorders. Repeatability of anoestrus and abortion were moderate to high in second and third lactation. Metritis was the most severe reproduction disorder. Overall incidence of reproduction disorders was lower in F1 than interbred genetic group of Karan Fries cows.

Book Genetic Parameters Estimate for Performance Traits of Fogera Cattle

Download or read book Genetic Parameters Estimate for Performance Traits of Fogera Cattle written by Tesfa Sendeku Assemu and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is targeted to read and inform about the Fogera cattle breed of Ethiopia that found in districts surrounding Lake Tana of Amhara region. The breed is well known for its milk production and gives up to eight litters of milk without any concentrate feed supplementation. The breed is also known by its over standing potential of the marsh area of Lake Tana and its long leg to plow the black and swampy land of the area. Fogera cattle breed is conserved at Andassa Livestock Research Center, the sole livestock research center in the country, and Metekel Fogera cattle conservation ranch for the past 50 years. On top of this the breed is also conserved by the community (In-situ) with "community based In-situ conservation approach" by the leading of the research center at Fogera and Gondar zuria districts. As shown in this book, the performance of the breed at the Ex-situ conservation site has shown improvements both in production and reproductive performance. The book also presents a detailed review and summary of the growth and reproductive performance of Ethiopian indigenous cattle breed.
