Book Biogeography and Ecology of the Rain Forests of Eastern Africa

Download or read book Biogeography and Ecology of the Rain Forests of Eastern Africa written by Jon C. Lovett and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-07-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eastern African rain forests are remarkable in their high level of endemism. Miocene uplift of the central African plateau separated these montane and coastal forests from the main Guineo-Congolian forest of west and central Africa. Since then, stable Indian Ocean temperatures maintained a region of high rainfall throughout Pleistocene droughts that devastated forest elsewhere on the continent. Relics of the former Pan-African rain forest survived here, the study of which provides a unique insight into tropical evolutionary processes. This book brings together research on the animals, plants and geography of this intriguing residual forest, and highlights the need for effective management practices to conserve its exceptional biodiversity in the face of increasing pressure for land for cultivation.

This book is essential reading for terrestrialecologists, zoologists, and students taking courses in invertebrate biology. Introductory chapters consider millipede taxonomy and phylogeny, basic anatomy, locomotion, and ecomorphology. Later chapters review feeding and digestion, metabolism, nerves, and neurosecretion, together with all aspects of millipedes in decomposition processes, and their role as pests. Theauthors provide an extremely comprehensive bibliography of research papers and literature.

Book Annotated type catalogue of the Bulimulidae Mollusca Gastropoda Orthalicoidea in the Natural History Museum London

Download or read book Annotated type catalogue of the Bulimulidae Mollusca Gastropoda Orthalicoidea in the Natural History Museum London written by Abraham S.H. Breure and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2014-03-21 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The family Bulimulidae is a dominant land snail family in the Neotropics, with more than 1000 nominal taxa described. Revisionary work has only partially been done, but many genera need further revisionary work for which a sound taxonomic basis is needed. Type specimens for more than 400 taxa of this family are present in the Natural History Museum, London, U.K., and are documented in this paper. For each taxon the relevant literature is cited, type locality, label, the provenance of the specimens, and the current systematic position; photographs of nearly all type specimens and labels are also provided.

Book The Political Philosophy of Needs

Download or read book The Political Philosophy of Needs written by Lawrence A. Hamilton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-08-14 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious and lively book argues for a rehabilitation of the concept of 'human needs' as central to politics and political theory. Contemporary political philosophy has focused on issues of justice and welfare to the exclusion of the important issues of political participation, democratic sovereignty, and the satisfaction of human needs, and this has had a deleterious effect on political practice. Lawrence Hamilton develops a compelling positive conception of human needs: the evaluation of needs must be located within a more general analysis of institutions, but can in turn help to justify forms of coercive authority that are directed toward the transformation of political and social institutions and practices. His argument is animated throughout by provocative and original discussions of topics such as autonomy, recognition, rights, civil society, liberalism and democracy, and will interest a wide range of readers in political and social philosophy, political theory, law, development and policy.

Book Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems

Download or read book Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems written by Yossi Loya and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-22 with total page 984 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes what is known about mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) geographically and by major taxa. MCEs are characterized by light-dependent corals and associated communities typically found at depths ranging from 30-40 m. and extending to over 150 m. in tropical and subtropical ecosystems. They are populated with organisms typically associated with shallow coral reefs, such as macroalgae, corals, sponges, and fishes, as well as specialist species unique to mesophotic depths. During the past decade, there has been an increasing scientific and management interest in MCEs expressed by the exponential increase in the number of publications studying this unique environment. Despite their close proximity to well-studied shallow reefs, and the growing evidence of their importance, our scientific knowledge of MCEs is still in its early stages. The topics covered in the book include: regional variation in MCEs; similarities and differences between mesophotic and shallow reef taxa, biotic and abiotic conditions, biodiversity, ecology, geomorphology, and geology; potential connectivity between MCEs and shallow reefs; MCE disturbances, conservation, and management challenges; and new technologies, key research questions/knowledge gaps, priorities, and future directions in MCE research.
