Download or read book Genesis written by Johann Peter Lange and published by Christian Classics Reproductions. This book was released on 2024-08-28 with total page 659 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original 63 volumes set are now reduced to 9 volumes. We have completed volumes 1, 6-9 which are the New Testament. Lord willing during 2023-2024, we will try to complete volumes 2-5 which are the Old Testament. This volume was published between 1867-1874 In contrast to the extreme skeptical-critical mode which came to characterize much of German scholarship in the 19th century, Lange represented a more traditional-conservative (and Evangelical) approach, shared in common with men such as E. W. Hengstenberg. He was also a (Reformed) minister, and the Commentaries reflect this combination of conservative criticism, Evangelical theology, and homiletics, in a way that is unique. For each passage that is covered, a consistent approach is adopted throughout. After giving the text in translation, along with textual notes, (as footnotes), three different kinds of commentary are presented: · EXEGETICAL AND CRITICAL · DOCTRINAL AND ETHICAL · HOMILETICAL AND PRACTICAL This gives you three times the value! For each verse you select, a drop-down box will appear allowing you to choose from each of these areas or kinds of commentary. For detailed analysis, go to the exegetical-critical notes; for sermon ideas and pastoral insights, select the Homiletical notes.

Download or read book From Creation to Babel Studies in Genesis 1 11 written by John Day and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories of Genesis 1-11 constitute one of the better known parts of the Old Testament, but their precise meaning and background still provide many debated questions for the modern interpreter. In this stimulating, learned and readable collection of essays, which paves the way for his forthcoming ICC commentary on these chapters, John Day attempts to provide definitive solutions to some ofthese questions. Amongst the topics included are the background and interpretation of the seven-day Priestly Creation narrative, problems in the interpretation of the Garden of Eden story, the relation of Cain and the Kenites, the strange stories of the sons of God and daughters of men and of Noah's drunkenness and the curse of Canaan, the precise ancient Near Eastern background of the Flood story and the preceding genealogies, and the meaning and background of the story of the tower and city of Babel. Throughout this volume John Day constantly seeks to determine the original meaning of these stories in the light of their ancient Near Eastern background, and to determine how far this original meaning has been obscured by later interpretations.
Download or read book The Intertextual Reception of Genesis 1 3 in Irenaeus of Lyons written by Stephen O. Presley and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Intertextual Reception of Genesis 1-3 in Irenaeus of Lyons, Stephen Presley explores the intertextual nature of Irenaeus’ interpretation of Genesis 1-3 by drawing on contemporary discussions on the topic. Irenaeus interprets the creation accounts, Presley argues, in continuity with the rest of the scriptural witness through a series of reading strategies including: a literary sense, prophetic fulfillment, typology, philological associations, organizational strategies, narratival arrangements, prosopological interpretation, illustrative identification, and general-to-particular reasoning. Irenaeus’ perspective competes with his Gnostic interlocutors who utilize similar methods of interpretation, but fashion distinctive textual relationships between Genesis 1-3 and other texts. These reading strategies circumscribe precisely how Irenaeus’ intertextual exegesis is applied to these creation texts within the integrative structure of his theological perspective.
