A series of environmental disasters and protonic wars have ruined the planet Zula. A space station was built to house a select group of survivors. The scientists on the space station develop new technologies, which are used to build a new spaceship. Also developed is D-stasis, a process for extending hibernation indefinitely, which could facilitate travel over intergalactic distances. When the space station is attacked by aliens, the only way to save a group of children is to launch them in the new spaceship, which has been programmed to search for a habitable planet. The mysterious spirit – Leaffe – intervenes. After a voyage of 20,000 light years, they awaken from D-stasis in a solar system consisting of nine planets and a small sun. The ship is near an ice planet, which is obviously uninhabitable. An accident with a 3-D model prompts a plan to blow up a moon, which should lead to the planet being moved to a warmer orbit. Radio contact through a black hole has enabled the receipt of messages transmitted from the space station Haven, and possible transport, giving them hope of seeing their families in the future. Their system of hibernation allows the travellers to periodically observe the planet’s geological and evolutionary changes over long periods, without themselves aging. The planet is seeded with a variety of life forms, whose evolution leads to some interesting and dangerous adventures.

In response to herbivory, plants release a complex blend of as many as 100 volatile chemicals, known as semiochemicals ('sign chemicals'). These act as an airborne SOS signal, revealing the presence of the herbivore to the predators and parasitoids that are its natural enemies. Plants also have endogenous defence mechanisms that can be induced in response to pathogens, and separate chapters deal with systemic acquired resistance, phytoalexins, and the interacting pathways in pathogen and pest resistance. The book discusses underlying biochemical mechanisms by which plant stress leads to the biosynthesis of chemical signals from pools of secondary metabolite precursors, or even from the primary metabolism source. Finally, consideration is given to the possibilities for exploiting these signalling pathways by plant molecular genetics. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of papers presented at a NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Biology and Molecular Biology of Plant-Pathogen Interactions" which was held at Dillington College, Ilminster, UK, 1-6 September 1985. It had been preceded by Advanced Study Institutes at Porte Conte, Sardinia in 1975 and at Cape Sounion, Greece in 1981. In recent years, methods for the manipulation and transfer of genes have revolutionized our understanding of gene structure and function. It was thus opportune to bring together scientists from distinct disciplines, e. g. plant pathology, cytology, biochemistry and molecular biology to discuss our present understanding of cellular interactions between plants. We also explored how the potential offered by the newer molecular technologies could best be realized. It soon became evident at the Workshop, and is a repeated theme of this publication, that future research will need concentrated multi disciplinary programmes. Many of the new approaches will be valuable. For example, immunocytochemistry does, for the first time, allow molecules to be located precisely within infected tissues. Equally, the methods of DNA isolation and gene transformation will facilitate the isolation and characterization of genes associated with pathogenesis and specificity. The description at the Workshop of immunocytochemical protocols and of transformation systems for pathogenic fungi have already stimulated an upsurge in research on plant-pathogen relationships. The papers discuss many interactions between plants and fungal and bacterial pathogens, but also provide a comparison with mycorrhizal and symbiotic relationships, and those involving mycoparasites.

This increased greenhouse gasses through the overuse of industry and the planet was heading for self-destruction. A space station, Haven, was built to house a select group, so their race would survive. When aliens, led by Shaitan, attacked the space station, Leaffe intervened. She helped a group of children to escape in the newly built spaceship Ark, which had been built on Haven using green technology. The crew on Ark travelled in D-stasis cocoons and did not age. This allowed Leaffe to take the Ark to a solar system many light-years away. Using the Ark’s advanced technology, Leaffe subtly persuaded them to change the orbit of a planet closer to the sun, creating planet Earth. By leaving their cocoons only for short periods, they were able to observe and take part in the evolution of Earth from the dawn of the dinosaurs to Homo sapiens. Three of them stayed with the sapiens, but Shaitan arrived, with devastating consequences. The Ark returned thousands of years later, finding some frightening facts about Shaitan and that there was more than one Mitochondrial Eve.

Book excerpt: Since the first observations of viral interference with antigen presentation in the MHC class-I pathway, the field has advanced to a detailed analysis. We know numerous genes and for some of them we have profound information on their mechanistic function. The antigen presentation pathway is affected at all stages starting from proteasomal degradation of an antigenic viral protein, as shown for EBV, transfer of the proteasomal cleavage products as peptides in the ER by specific transporters, the loading of the nascent MHC class-I molecule, and finally the transport of the complex to the surface and presentation in a normal or deranged form. All these different steps of the MHC class-I antigen presentation pathway are targets for viral proteins. Not only MHC class-I but also MHC class-II proteins are a target of viral influence either by direct downregulation and degradation of proteins or by interference of signal transduction pathways.

In order to reduce the risk of Cd pollution in crops, Cd pollution-safe cultivar (Cd-PSC) strategy, i.e. identifying, breeding and applying the cultivars with particularly low Cd accumulation capacity in edible parts even when grown in Cd contaminated soil, is proposed as a most effective, low-cost and environmental-friendly method for minimizing Cd pollution in crops. To describe the framework of the Cd-PSC strategy, a series research results on water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica Forsk) are summarized as a typical case. The latest findings about the Cd-PSCs of water spinach, including cultivar variation in shoot Cd accumulation, identification and verification of low- and high-Cd accumulating cultivars, stability of Cd accumulation capacity at the cultivar level, biochemical and molecular mechanisms of the cultivar-dependent Cd uptake, transfer and accumulation, breeding methods for improving Cd-PSCs, and so on, have been covered. This book will provide valuable theoretical and practical understandings for controlling Cd pollution in crops grown on agricultural soils with known or unknown risk of Cd contamination.
