Book The Book of Letters

Download or read book The Book of Letters written by J Mutter and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English language is a fascinating subject and thanks to circumstances in history has possibly travelled the globe more than any other. The very basis of the written language is in the letters used to form words, and this book examines every aspect of the alphabet available for writing English, from the formation of letters to their use in words. Each and every letter of the alphabet used to write down the English language has a story to tell. Often we accept them without a second thought and even believe there are only twenty-six of them, whereas if we look more closely there are at least fifty-two as each of the capital letters has a lower case form. Sometimes they are just smaller versions of the larger, such as C and c, or X and x, but the majority of letters have a different form entirely like A and a, or D and d. They also have more than one sound associated with them, many have three, and the mighty letter R involves itself with around seventeen different sounds. No wonder the language takes some mastering! The Book of Letters looks at global English, which the Oxford Online Dictionary refers to as 'British and World English', and examines each letter in minute detail starting with the shape, to the inferred sounds. Fact-finders, teachers and students should all improve their knowledge from this detailed work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No matter which side of the nature/nurture debate you're on, Amy Lincoln's prospects do not look good. Her mother abandoned her when she was ten months old (just a couple of months after Amy's father went off to serve his first prison term), leaving her in the care of Grandma Lil, who shoplifts dinner on the way home from her job as a leg waxer to the rich and refined. When Amy is fourteen, she gets a scholarship to a New England boarding school -- her exposure to the moneyed class. After Harvard and the Columbia School of Journalism, Amy becomes a political reporter for the prestigious weekly In Depth. While covering a political fund-raiser, Amy meets a college student who claims to be the son of one of the presidential candidates. It's precisely the sort of story that In Depth wouldn't deign to cover, but the idea of tracking down a lost parent and demanding recognition intrigues Amy. As she begins a search of her own past as well as the candidate's, she discovers a new and unimpeachable grandmother and a mother who is much more than she bargained for. Most important, she finally comes to understand the stuff she's made of and finds the perfect place to hang her hat in the world. Bold, insightful, witty, and exhilarating, Any Place I Hang My Hat is a novel about one extraordinary young woman looking for a place to belong -- by one of the most compelling and beloved voices in contemporary fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I left my wedding dress hanging in a tree somewhere in North Dakota. I don't know why that particular tree appealed to me. Perhaps it was because it looked as if it had given up and died years ago and was still standing because it didn't know what else to do. . . In her deliciously funny, heartfelt, and moving debut, Cathy Lamb introduces some of the most wonderfully eccentric women since The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood and The Secret Life of Bees, as she explores the many ways we find the road home. From the moment Julia Bennett leaves her abusive Boston fiancé at the altar and her ugly wedding dress hanging from a tree in South Dakota, she knows she's driving away from the old Julia, but what she's driving toward is as messy and undefined as her own wounded soul. The old Julia dug her way out of a tortured, trailer park childhood with a monster of a mother. The new Julia will be found at her Aunt Lydia's rambling, hundred-year-old farmhouse outside Golden, Oregon. There, among uppity chickens and toilet bowl planters, Julia is welcomed by an eccentric, warm, and often wise clan of women, including a psychic, a minister's unhappy wife, an abused mother of four, and Aunt Lydia herself--a woman who is as fierce and independent as they come. Meeting once a week for drinks and the baring of souls, it becomes clear that every woman holds secrets that keep her from happiness. But what will it take for them to brave becoming their true selves? For Julia, it's chocolate. All her life, baking has been her therapy and her refuge, a way to heal wounds and make friends. Nobody anywhere makes chocolates as good as Julia's, and now, chocolate just might change her life--and bring her love when she least expects it. But it can't keep her safe. As Julia gradually opens her heart to new life, new friendships, and a new man, the past is catching up to her. And this time, she will not be able to run but will have to face it head on. Filled with warmth, love, and truth, Julia's Chocolates is an unforgettable novel of hope and healing that explores the hurts we keep deep in our hearts, the love that liberates us, the courage that defines us, and the chocolate that just might take us there. Advance praise for Cathy Lamb and Julia's Chocolates "Julia's Chocolates is wise, tender, and very funny. In Julia Bennett, Cathy Lamb has created a deeply wonderful character, brave and true. I loved this beguiling novel about love, friendship, and the enchantment of really good chocolate." --Luanne Rice, New York Times bestselling author

Download or read book Money and More written by Todd Gaddis and published by Guardian Books. This book was released on 2007-07 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you find yourself interested in money, you're in good company because Jesus was too-and still is. In fact one-sixth of the gospels and one-third of the parables deal with the critical area of stewardship. Money & More: The Quest for Generous Living explores a portion of these key encounters and teachings. But it doesn't stop there. The author taps into other sections of the Old and New Testaments to reveal Divine counsel on a subject that has occupied people's time and attention throughout the centuries. God provides three ways for us to invest in eternity-with our time, talents and treasures. The way we share our treasures is the driving force behind this book. Liberation begins when we realize God is the owner and we are the stewards. How we choose to handle what He so graciously provides has a major impact on the quality of life we can anticipate. Some choose to hoard their money, thus missing the blessings that could be theirs by sharing their resources and giving back a portion of what they've received to churches and other worthy charitable causes. Others squander their money as fast, some even faster than it comes in, leaving nothing to give. Jesus' claim that "It is more blessed to give than receive" (Acts 20:35) is by no means an empty platitude or shop worn clich . It's a life changing truth that Money & More seeks to deliver in a fresh and a new way. Dive in, yet take small bites and chew slowly as you begin your quest into generous living. About the author: Todd Gaddis has been a pastor since 1990 and currently serves at First Baptist Church in LaFayette, Georgia. He has written for Focus on the Family, Leadership, Pray, War Cry and numerous LifeWay publications. Before entering the pastorate, he worked in public relations and fundraising for a Christian college and also as a corporate sales representative. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists no longer accept the existence of a distinct moral organ as phrenologists once did. A generation of young neurologists is using advanced technological medical equipment to unravel specific brain processes enabling moral cognition. In addition, evolutionary psychologists have formulated hypotheses about the origins and nature of our moral architecture. Little by little, the concept of a ‘moral brain’ is reinstated. As the crossover between disciplines focusing on moral cognition was rather limited up to now, this book aims at filling the gap. Which evolutionary biological hypotheses provide a useful framework for starting new neurological research? How can brain imaging be used to corroborate hypotheses concerning the evolutionary background of our species? In this reader, a broad range of prominent scientists and philosophers shed their expert view on the current accomplishments and future challenges in the field of moral cognition and assess how cooperation between neurology and evolutionary psychology can boost research into the field of the moral brain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of financial giving to the church can create tension and anxiety if not understood from the scriptural perspective of the Christian's heart for Christ. In this theological treatment of giving, Steve Swartz examines the biblical basis for obedience in giving to the Lord's work, which is, ultimately, because of his love for and loyalty to Jesus Christ. The gospel of Christ compels the Christian to respond in gratitude for God's grace in salvation, and giving is one such tangible response.Dr. Steve Swartz (M.Div., The Master's Seminary, D.Min., The Master's Seminary) serves as the senior pastor of Grace Bible Church of Bakersfield, California. He is the author of several books such as Shattered Shepherds and Strength in the River and is a regular lecturer at John MacArthur's Grace Advance, a post-graduate academy for church-planting pastors. Steve is the featured Bible teacher at Steadfast in the Faith (www.steadfastinthefaith.org), the online media ministry of Grace Bible Church."The call to give is often met with tension in today's church. But with the mind of a theologian and the heart of a shepherd, Dr. Swartz carefully tackles a sensitive subject with grace, compassion, and clarity, guiding the reader to a better understanding of the heart of God... This book includes practical teaching on giving, but even more, provides a pathway to a life of real joy focused on worshiping the Lord with a generous heart... After reading Joyful Generosity: Responding to God's Grace, I have a greater desire to give to Kingdom work, a clearer view of God's heart, and a more intense longing for heaven."-Dr. Michael Staton, Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church of Mustang, Oklahoma, and featured speaker of Every Word Preached, www.everywordpreached.com."Joyful Generosity: Responding to God's Grace is a spiritually powerful, biblical-theological approach to the subject of financial stewardship. Dr. Swartz avoids the heresies of prosperity theology while teaching God's clear commands and promises related to giving ... I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting a God-centered and audience-sensitive exposition of biblical giving. I will be providing this book to the pastors in all our capital campaigns."-Dr. Rod Rogers, Owner/principal consultant with AMI Church Consulting Services, www.abundantgiving .com.
