The majority of those individuals have a loss of a lower limb (Ziegler‐Graham et al, 2008), and over 150,000 people undergo lower limb amputation per year (Dillingham et al, 2005; Owings et al, 1996). Those with transtibial or transfemoral limb loss utilize lower-limb prostheses, which commonly includes a passive prosthetic foot. Prosthetic feet can be costly, limited in their functionality, and can be difficult to integrate with the addition of a sock, prosthetic cover (i.e. shell), and shoe. This study explores the use of computer-aided generative design to create usable additively manufactured (AM) mechanically-passive prosthetic feet that are optimized for multiple forms of ambulation including level, upstairs, downstairs, and sloped walking. Using the generative design framework, the foot is not only optimized for safety during multiple forms of ambulation, but also redesigned for reduced mass and cost using AM, as well as greater ease of use – forgoing the need for a separate shell or shoe by combining the prosthetic foot and customized sole into a single integrated unit. The result of this design study is a customizable 3D-printed foot model and sole, verified for safety through compressive loads to simulate multiple ambulation tasks, as well as different phase within these tasks. The models were tested against existing carbon fiber and 3D printed passive foot models, with and without a shell and shoe, under compression to simulate different forms of ambulation. For these conditions, we evaluate stiffness profiles and failure modes experimentally, as well as examine the distributions of stress and displacement within the finite element simulations of the generative design to understand how these designs function during different phases and modes of ambulation. This creation and validation of an AM, customizable foot and shoe prosthetic could open the door for the increased accessibility and performance of foot prostheses, as well as improve the quality of life for lower-limb amputees

It is shown that cholesteric liquid crystals in the synovial liquid play a significant role in the mechanism of intra-articular friction reduction. The results of structural, rheological and tribological research of the creation of artificial synovial liquids containing cholesteric liquid crystals in natural synovial liquids are described. These liquid crystals reproduce the lubrication properties of natural synovia and provide a high chondroprotective efficiency. They were tested in osteoarthritis models and in clinical practice.

The camp serves as a home-away-from-home where we might rethink a deliberate life. We also camp to find a new collective space where family and society converge. Many of us attended summer camps, and the legacies of these childhood havens form part of American culture. In Campsite, Charlie Hailey provides a highly original and artfully composed interpretation of the cultural significance and inherently paradoxical nature of camps and camping in contemporary American society. Offering a new understanding of the complex relationship between place, time, and architecture in an increasingly mobile culture, Hailey explores campsites as places that necessitate a unique combination of contrasting qualities, such as locality and foreignness, mobility and fixity, temporality and permanence, and public domesticity. Camping methods reflect the rigid flexibility of the process: leaving home, arriving at a site, clearing an area, making and then finally breaking camp. The phases of this sequence are both separate and indistinct. To understand this paradox, Hailey emphasizes the role of process. He constructs a philosophical framework to elucidate the "placefulness" -- or sense of place -- of such temporary constructions and provides alternative understandings of how we think of the home and of public versus private dwelling spaces.Historically, camps have been used as places for scouting out future towns, for clearing provisional spaces, and for making semipermanent homes-away-from-home. To understand how "cultures of camping" develop and accommodate this dynamic mix of permanence and flexibility, Hailey looks at three basic qualities of the camp: as a site for place-making, as a populist precursor for modern built environments, and as a "method." This is especially true with the population deemed to be “the oldest of the old,” specifically those over the age of 85. Unlike any other time in history, this demographic is the fastest growing segment of most developed countries. In the United States the oldest old is projected to double from 4.3 million to 9.6 million by 2030. The increased life expectancy of the population since the early 1900s has been built on the improvement of living conditions, diet, public health and advancement in medical care. With this we have seen a steady decline in the age-specific prevalence of vascular and heart diseases, stroke and even dementia. Older persons are healthier today than their counterparts decades ago. More importantly than in any other age group, the care of the oldest old must be individualized; management decisions should be made taking into consideration the older persons’ expressed wishes, quality of life, function and mental capacity. The inevitable consequence is that there will be an increase in the prevalence of older persons with chronic diseases, multiple co-existing pathologies and neuro-degenerative diseases. The oldest of the aging population are often excluded from drug trials and their treatments are largely based on findings extrapolated from that of the younger old. Furthermore, among the oldest old, physiologically they are more diverse than other segments of the population. Their demographic characteristics are unparalleled and different compared to that of the younger old. Several studies have drawn attention to the differing attitudes among health professionals towards elderly people and many show prejudice because they are old. As a result, the use of age as a criteria in determining the appropriateness of treatment is of very limited validity, yet there are limited resources that guide physicians through these challenges. This book creates a greater awareness of these challenges and offers practical guidelines for working within the infrastructures vital to this demographic. This book is designed for geriatricians, primary care physicians, junior medical officers, specialty geriatrics nurses, and gerontologists. It is divided into 3 sections: General Considerations, Chronic diseases and Geriatric Syndromes.
