Book Generation Portrait of the United Nations Development Programme

Download or read book Generation Portrait of the United Nations Development Programme written by United Nations Development Programme and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In one generation, development progress has transformed the prospects for humankind, and international cooperation has been a catalyst. Technical assistance for developing countries through two predecessor organizations of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) had small beginnings in 1950, and grew to become a multimillion dollar enterprise. This "portrait" shows the evolution of this endeavor over the last 35 years. It looks at how development is changing, and how UNDP is also adapting to new circumstances and needs. Expanding services, a broader resource base, and closer coordination of external assistance are giving UNDP a new look. Also included are four country profiles, illustrating the design, scope, delivery, and national impact of UNDP assistance over the years. These countries are the Dominican Republic, Sri Lanka, Algeria, and Senegal. A complete listing is given of the major components in the participation of over 180 countries and territories (developed and developing) in the program since its inception. The document concludes with an extract from testimony given in May 1985 by a former UNDP/UNESCO international expert to a parliamentary committee in his home country (a major donor to UNDP) about on-the-ground experience in technical cooperation. Book The United Nations Development Programme

Download or read book The United Nations Development Programme written by Craig N. Murphy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-09-14 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations Development Programme is the central network co-ordinating the work of the United Nations in over 160 developing countries. This 2006 book provides the first authoritative and accessible history of the Programme and its predecessors. Based on the findings of hundreds of interviews and archives in more than two dozen countries, Craig Murphy traces the history of the UNDP's organizational structure and mission, its relationship to the multilateral financial institutions, and the development of its doctrines. He argues that the principles on which the UNDP was founded remain as relevant in a world divided by terrorism as they were in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, as are the fundamental problems that have plagued the Programme from its origin, including the opposition of traditionally isolationist forces in the industrialized world.

Book UN Contributions to Development Thinking and Practice

Download or read book UN Contributions to Development Thinking and Practice written by Richard Jolly and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2004-06-18 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: UN Contributions to Development Thinking and Practice is at once a history of the ideas and realities of international development, from the classical economists to the recent emphasis on human rights, and a history of the UN's role in shaping and implementing development paradigms over the last half century. The authors, all prominent in the field of development studies, argue that the UN's founding document, the UN Charter, is infused with the human values and human concerns that are at the center of the UN's thinking on economic and human development today. In the intervening period, the authors show how the UN's approach to development evolved from mainstream areas of economic development to include issues of employment, poverty reduction, fairer distribution of the benefits of growth, equality of men and women, child development, social justice, and environmental sustainability.

Book Global Institutions and Development

Download or read book Global Institutions and Development written by Morten Boas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book explores a very broad range of ideas and institutions and provides thorough and detailed case studies in the context of broader theoretical analysis. Key topics such as poverty, global governance, sustainable development and the environment are closely examined, with detailed case studies of the World Bank, the WTO, the IMF, Asian Development Bank, UN Development Programme and the OECD's Development Assistance Committee. The impact multilateral institutions such as the World Bank and IMF have on development is hotly debated, but few doubt their power and influence. This book examines the concepts that have powerfully influenced development policy and, more broadly, looks at the role of ideas in international development institutions and how they have affected current development discourse. The authors analyze why some ideas are taken up by these institutions, how the ideas travel within the systems and how they are translated into policy, modified, distorted or resisted.
