Book Comprehensive Nanoscience and Technology

Download or read book Comprehensive Nanoscience and Technology written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2010-10-29 with total page 2785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction: Nanotechnology and its underpinning sciences are progressing with unprecedented rapidity. With technical advances in a variety of nanoscale fabrication and manipulation technologies, the whole topical area is maturing into a vibrant field that is generating new scientific research and a burgeoning range of commercial applications, with an annual market already at the trillion dollar threshold. The means of fabricating and controlling matter on the nanoscale afford striking and unprecedented opportunities to exploit a variety of exotic phenomena such as quantum, nanophotonic and nanoelectromechanical effects. Moreover, researchers are elucidating new perspectives on the electronic and optical properties of matter because of the way that nanoscale materials bridge the disparate theories describing molecules and bulk matter. Surface phenomena also gain a greatly increased significance; even the well-known link between chemical reactivity and surface-to-volume ratio becomes a major determinant of physical properties, when it operates over nanoscale dimensions. Against this background, this comprehensive work is designed to address the need for a dynamic, authoritative and readily accessible source of information, capturing the full breadth of the subject. Its six volumes, covering a broad spectrum of disciplines including material sciences, chemistry, physics and life sciences, have been written and edited by an outstanding team of international experts. Addressing an extensive, cross-disciplinary audience, each chapter aims to cover key developments in a scholarly, readable and critical style, providing an indispensible first point of entry to the literature for scientists and technologists from interdisciplinary fields. The work focuses on the major classes of nanomaterials in terms of their synthesis, structure and applications, reviewing nanomaterials and their respective technologies in well-structured and comprehensive articles with extensive cross-references. It has been a constant surprise and delight to have found, amongst the rapidly escalating number who work in nanoscience and technology, so many highly esteemed authors willing to contribute. Sharing our anticipation of a major addition to the literature, they have also captured the excitement of the field itself in each carefully crafted chapter. Along with our painstaking and meticulous volume editors, full credit for the success of this enterprise must go to these individuals, together with our thanks for (largely) adhering to the given deadlines. Lastly, we record our sincere thanks and appreciation for the skills and professionalism of the numerous Elsevier staff who have been involved in this project, notably Fiona Geraghty, Megan Palmer and Greg Harris, and especially Donna De Weerd-Wilson who has steered it through from its inception. We have greatly enjoyed working with them all, as we have with each other.

Book Synthesis of Nanocomposites by Laser Ablation

Download or read book Synthesis of Nanocomposites by Laser Ablation written by Stephen Mutisya and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immunoglobulin E (IgE)-conjugated gold nanoparticles were produced via in situ conjugation of gold nanoparticles with immunoglobulin E by laser ablation of Au in a liquid solution. The colloidal stability and the size distribution of the resulting bio-nanoconjugates were examined with UV-Visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). These techniques showed that the Au nanoparticles in aqueous solutions were highly monodispersed spherical particles with a very narrow size distribution. The particles net diameter using TEM, was found to be D5 =3.8[plus or minus] .9nm and D10 =4.7 [plus or minus] 1.3nm while the hydrodynamic diameter obtained with DLS was found to be h5 D =171 [plus or minus] 12 nm, h10 D =164 [plus or minus] 18nm for 5min and 10min laser ablation time respectively. Enzyme-Linked immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and flow cytometry measurements of the conjugates confirmed that the gold-bound protein remained biologically active, thus paving the way for the application of these nanoparticles in immuno-diagnostics, particularly in tumor-targeted drug delivery.

Download or read book Gold Nanoparticles written by Joshua R. Chin and published by . This book was released on 2020-02-19 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gold Nanoparticles: Advances in Research and Applications opens by presenting the properties of gold nanoparticles and the necessity of a thermodynamic investigation. The physics of heat generation and heat transfer by diffusion, convection and radiation are examined, and the effect of thermoplasmonics on the random lasing of nanoparticles is described. Nanoparticles are being incorporated into a variety of devices to improve their performance. Recent advances in applications of the plasmonic effects of nanoparticles, significantly focused on the incorporation of gold nanoparticles to improve solar cell efficiencies, are discussed. The authors go on to investigate the formation of elongated gold nanoparticles, which occurred by laser ablation of gold target in aqueous solutions containing divalent ions. Additionally, the influence of a permanent external magnetic field on generated earlier colloidal solutions of Au nanoparticles is investigated. The penultimate chapter describes the events that lead to gold's well-deserved reputation as a good catalyst for several reactions, and considers some of the applications and catalytic uses of gold, mostly in the form of nanoparticles. The concluding study explores gold nanoparticles' applications for the treatment of various forms of cancer, such as adenocarcinoma, melanoma, breast cancer, gastric, laryngeal, lung, oral cancer and prostate cancer. Gold nanoparticles are used in cancer treatment primarily as drug carriers, photosensitizers and radiosensitizers.

Book Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles Via Laser Ablation in the Presence of Phytoglycogen

Download or read book Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles Via Laser Ablation in the Presence of Phytoglycogen written by Joshua Sampson and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phytoglycogen is a naturally occurring glucose-based polymer that has promising applications in personal care, nutrition, and biomedicine. Gold nanoparticles were generated using two-step laser ablation in pure Milli-Q water (AuNP) and Milli-Q containing phytoglycogen (AuNP-Phg) and characterized for size, shape, and nanoparticle concentration. AuNP showed a unimodal distribution of diameters, peaked at 8.8 nm, but AuNP-Phg showed a bimodal distribution: smaller particles, peaked at 4.1 nm, had their growth limited by phytoglycogen; and larger particles, peaked at 7.9 nm, grew unhindered. AuNP, AuNP-Phg and AuNP mixed with phytoglycogen (AuNP+Phg) were used to catalyze the reduction of 4-nitrophenol using the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model. The dispersions had similar k, K_NP and K_BH4; however, the average surface-normalized apparent rate constant was smaller and the induction period was larger for AuNP+Phg compared to AuNP and AuNP-Phg. This suggests that phytoglycogen associates with the gold nanoparticles, preventing the reagent from reaching the catalytic site.
