Book Generation and Parametric Amplification of Few Cycle Light Pulses at Relativistic Intensities

Download or read book Generation and Parametric Amplification of Few Cycle Light Pulses at Relativistic Intensities written by Alexander Kessel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports on the development of a pioneering light source architecture of the so-called Petawatt Field Synthesizer (PFS) system, which is based on short-pulse pumped, optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA), driven by a homemade, 1-ps diode-pumped Yb:YAG. At a few-cycle pulse duration of the amplified pulses, this architecture yields record levels of peak power and temporal contrast, the latter boasting a 100-times faster rise time from the noise level to peak intensity of the pulse compared to conventional laser systems. This allows investigation of the true laser–solid interaction without premature plasma expansion and without lossy pulse cleaning by e.g. plasma mirrors. The book describes several concepts for the generation of broadband, high-energy and high-contrast seed pulses, as well as the OPCPA development, few-cycle pulse compression and contrast characterization in a concise and insightful manner. The theory chapter serves as an excellent and accessible primer on OPCPA and other nonlinear interactions, while the experimental parts provide an excellent description of the challenges of developing such a novel architecture and some of the innovative solutions to overcome them.

Book A New Generation of High Power Waveform Controlled Few Cycle Light Sources

Download or read book A New Generation of High Power Waveform Controlled Few Cycle Light Sources written by Marcus Seidel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents first successful experiments to carrier-envelope-phase stabilize a high-power mode-locked thin-disk oscillator and to compress the pulses emitted from this laser to durations of only a few-optical cycles. Moreover, the monograph introduces several methods to achieve power-scalability of compression and stabilization techniques. All experimental approaches are compared in detail and may serve as a guideline for developing high-power waveform controlled, few-cycle light sources which offer tremendous potential to exploit extreme nonlinear optical effects at unprecedentedly high repetition rates and to establish table-top infrared light sources with a unique combination of brilliance and bandwidth. As an example, the realization of a multi-Watt, multi-octave spanning, mid-infrared femtosecond source is described. The thesis starts with a basic introduction to the field of ultrafast laser oscillators. It subsequently presents additional details of previously published research results and establishes a connection between them. It therefore addresses both newcomers to, and experts in the field of high-power ultrafast laser development.

Book High Power High Intensity Few cycle Pulses in the Mid IR for Strong field Experiments

Download or read book High Power High Intensity Few cycle Pulses in the Mid IR for Strong field Experiments written by Matthias Baudisch and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-energy, few-cycle, mid-lR radiation sources featuring high pulse repetition rates are of tremendous interest for a variety of strong-field physics and attoscience applications. Such systems could be used in combination with the high harmonic generation process as nolel, tabletop, high-fluxX-rayradiation sources providing photon energies up to the keVlevel. Additionally, strong-field ionization eperiments of atom and molecules could help unravel the underlying phpics of photochemical reactions and molecular transformations. Nevertheless, implementing such sources remains challenging due to the absence of suitable mid-lR laser gain materials. One approach to orcrcome current limitations is optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA). While this method is already commonly used in the visible and near-lR spectral range, justfew demonstrations emitting mid-lR, highenergy, few-cple pulses meeting the stringent requirements set by strongfield physics erperiments hare been demonstrated. ln this thesis we present our effort to push the performance of current high-power, m id-lR OPCPA systems to overcome existing limitations and to match and even exceed the performance of similar visible and near-lR radiation sources. We report on the design and implementation of a high-efficiency, frequency up-con\,ersion extension of the one-of-a-kind, high-power, few-cycle, mid-lR OPCPA system located in the AUO group at the lnstitute of Photonic Sciences in Barcelona. The unique multi-color source provides opticallysynchronized, high-energy, femtosecond outputs atwavelength ranging from the deep-UV up to the mid-lR regime and a high pulse repetition rate bepnd 100 kHz. The short output pulse durations in combination with the all optical synchronization scheme makes the source a unique tool to drive highly nonlinear and strongfield pump-probe eperiments in the tunnel or multi-photon ionization regime. ln the second part, we report on the fundamental redesign and rebuild of the original high-power, mid-lR source yielding the first implementation of a GW-lercl peak-power, mid-lR OPCPA system featuring simultaneously pulse repetition rates beyond 100 kHz The upscaling of the pulse energy by a factor of 6 while maintaining the pulse repetition rate yelds a mid-lR output average power of 19 W ln order to enable such large mid-lR average power, we performed an in-depth study of common, nonlinear mid-lR crystals in respect to their thermal, via residual absorption induced parametric amplification limitations. ln the third part, we present one of the first realizations of few-cycle, mid-lR pulse self-compression via filamentary propagation in the anomalous dispersion regime in a bulk medium. The spectro-temporal behavior of the self-compressed pulses is studied as a function of the driving mid-lR pulse parameters resulting in temporal pulse shortening down to sub-3 optical crycles. We prove the suitabilityof this technique as compactand stable post-compression method featuring CEPstable,few-cycle pulse generation in the mid-lR spectral range.

Book Control of Nonlinear Laser Pulse Propagation in Plasma with Strong Magnetic Fields

Download or read book Control of Nonlinear Laser Pulse Propagation in Plasma with Strong Magnetic Fields written by Thomas Cunningham Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We examine nonlinear laser pulse dynamics in plasma, encompassing both transverse and longitudinal envelope effects, in isolation and when coupled by the plasma. This is underpinned by an interest in how strong magnetic fields, aligned along the laser axis, modify these processes. In the presence of a strong magnetic field, such that the electron cyclotron frequency is on the order of the laser frequency, there is dramatic modification to the laser-plasma interactions, with the electron motion under left circularly polarised light remaining weakly-relativistic-like at laser intensities typically associated with fully-relativistic behaviour. Conversely right circularly polarised light sees the opposite effect, with the laser-plasma interactions becoming nonlinear at much lower light intensities. This affects all processes underpinned by relativistic motion of the electrons, chiefly self-focusing and self-compression. Such processes are studied in detail for both unmagnetised and magnetised plasma, and the results are compared. We find that not only does an external field alter the relativistic response of the electrons, but it also modifies the laser group and phase velocities, making the pulse shape of interest to the envelope dynamics. We apply this to study spherical compression of a laser pulse, wherein the pulse dimensions reduce symmetrically towards a single cycle. This process results in greatly amplified single-cycle pulses in the lambda-cubic regime, which may peak at over 100 times the initial laser intensity. Finally, the process by which a fully relativistic pulse may amplify an existing magnetic field is examined. We find that while this effect is known of for Laguerre-Gaussian light, it can also occur for linearly polarised light. The pondero motive effect of the laser, and the external field trapping particles which would otherwise escape, bends their trajectories such that a self-sustaining azimuthal current forms. This current scales with both laser intensity and plasma density, and may produce fields of up to 10 kilotesla. We offer that this work may be of interest for the manipulation of low-power or long-wavelength lasers in underdense plasma, the generation of single-cycle pulses for high-harmonic generation and the generation of localised, quasistatic ultra-intense magnetic fields.

Book Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers

Download or read book Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The laser has revolutionized many areas of science and society, providing bright and versatile light sources that transform the ways we investigate science and enables trillions of dollars of commerce. Now a second laser revolution is underway with pulsed petawatt-class lasers (1 petawatt: 1 million billion watts) that deliver nearly 100 times the total world's power concentrated into a pulse that lasts less than one-trillionth of a second. Such light sources create unique, extreme laboratory conditions that can accelerate and collide intense beams of elementary particles, drive nuclear reactions, heat matter to conditions found in stars, or even create matter out of the empty vacuum. These powerful lasers came largely from U.S. engineering, and the science and technology opportunities they enable were discussed in several previous National Academies' reports. Based on these advances, the principal research funding agencies in Europe and Asia began in the last decade to invest heavily in new facilities that will employ these high-intensity lasers for fundamental and applied science. No similar programs exist in the United States. Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers assesses the opportunities and recommends a path forward for possible U.S. investments in this area of science.

Book Femtosecond Optical Frequency Comb Principle Operation and Applications

Download or read book Femtosecond Optical Frequency Comb Principle Operation and Applications written by Jun Ye and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-06-15 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few years, there has been a convergence between the fields of ultrafast science, nonlinear optics, optical frequency metrology, and precision laser spectroscopy. These fields have been developing largely independently since the birth of the laser, reaching remarkable levels of performance. On the ultrafast frontier, pulses of only a few cycles long have been produced, while in optical spectroscopy, the precision and resolution have reached one part in Although these two achievements appear to be completely disconnected, advances in nonlinear optics provided the essential link between them. The resulting convergence has enabled unprecedented advances in the control of the electric field of the pulses produced by femtosecond mode-locked lasers. The corresponding spectrum consists of a comb of sharp spectral lines with well-defined frequencies. These new techniques and capabilities are generally known as “femtosecond comb technology. ” They have had dramatic impact on the diverse fields of precision measurement and extreme nonlinear optical physics. The historical background for these developments is provided in the Foreword by two of the pioneers of laser spectroscopy, John Hall and Theodor Hänsch. Indeed the developments described in this book were foreshadowed by Hänsch’s early work in the 1970s when he used picosecond pulses to demonstrate the connection between the time and frequency domains in laser spectroscopy. This work complemented the advances in precision laser stabilization developed by Hall.
