Download or read book Research Investigation of the Generation Measurement and Properties of Picosecond Laser Pulses written by William H. Glenn and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report summarizes a number of research projects concerned with the generation, measurement, and properties of picosecond laser pulses produced by mode-locked lasers. Topics discussed include a theory of the two photon absorption-fluorescence method of pulse width measurement, a statistical model of the mode-locking process that is capable of explaining many of the observed features, a comparison of the model with experimental results, experiments with time-resolved spectroscopy and experiments with a novel type of nonlinear optical element that is potentially useful for mode-locking. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon after the invention of the laser, a brand-new area of endeavour emerged after the discovery that powerful ultrashort (picosecond) light pulses could be extracted from some lasers. Chemists, physicists, and engineers quickly recognized that such pulses would allow direct temporal studies of extremely rapid phenomena requiring, however, development of revolutionary ultrafast optical and electronic devices. For basic research the development of picosecond pulses was highly important because experimentalists were now able to measure directly the motions of atoms and molecules in liquids and solids: by disrupting a material from equilibrium with an intense picosecond pulse and then recording the time of return to the equilibrium state by picosecond techniques. Studies of picosecond laser pulses-their generation and diagnostic tech niques-are still undergoing a fairly rapid expansion, but a critical review of the state of the art by experienced workers in the field may be a timely help to new experimentalists. We shall review the sophisticated tools developed in the last ten years, including the modelocked picosecond-pulse-emitting lasers, the picosecond detection techniques, and picosecond devices. Moreover, we shall outline the basic foundations for the study of rapid events in chemistry and physics, which have emerged after many interesting experiments and which are now being applied in biology. An in-depth coverage of various aspects of the picosecond field should be helpful to scientists and engineers alike.

Book Flexible Generation of Picosecond Laser Pulses in the Infrared and Green Spectral Range by Gain Switching of Semiconductor Lasers

Download or read book Flexible Generation of Picosecond Laser Pulses in the Infrared and Green Spectral Range by Gain Switching of Semiconductor Lasers written by Sina Riecke and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Picosecond laser pulses find diverse applications for example in material processing as well as in analysis and sensing. Fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy in particular requires pulses with variable repetition rate and moderate pulse energy. While suitable pulses in the red and blue spectral range can be provided by gain-switched laser diodes, the generation of green laser pulses requires a more elaborate setup based on second harmonic generation. The starting point is a gain-switched infrared distributed-feedback laser diode. The optimization of the laser design and the operating conditions allows to generate spectrally narrow picosecond pulses with a peak power above 1 W. Different gain media are compared for further amplification of these pulses, and options for the miniaturization of the master-oscillator power-amplifier system are explored. The resulting intense infrared pulses are then used for second harmonic generation of green picoseconds pulses. Their peak power of above 5 W exceeds all previous green pulse sources with variable repetition rate. In terms of pulse energy and background suppression, the reported green pulses are thus ideally suited for fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy

Book Laser Picosecond Pulse Generation and Measurement

Download or read book Laser Picosecond Pulse Generation and Measurement written by D. J. Bradley and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailed studies of ruby laser mode-locking with saturable absorbers were carried out. Oscillation in pure, low order transverse modes has been achieved and improvements in pulse duration and general reproducibility have been obtained by employing DDCI in optical contact with a laser cavity mirror. Anomalous quenching effects of two-photon fluorescence patterns in Rhodamine 6G and DPA have been extensively studies. Transverse mode-locking of the ruby laser has also been observed in a confocal cavity which also produced simultaneous transverse and longitudinal mode-locking. The saturable action of phthalocyanine dyes in the vapour phase has been studied and successful Q-switching of the ruby laser employing phthalocyanine vapour has been accomplished. (Author).

Book High Voltage Picosecond Pulse Generation Utilizing Lasers

Download or read book High Voltage Picosecond Pulse Generation Utilizing Lasers written by R. Heintz and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mod-locked Q-switched Nd:YAG laser is used to generate a train of light pulses of approximately 70 picoseconds duration. The energy in these laser pulses are of the order of 2 milli-joules. The train of pulses are then passed through a switchout so that a single pulse is selected. This single pulse then strikes a chromium doped GaAs semiconductor switch which then conducts. If a high voltage supply is connected to one end of the switch and a load is connected to the other end, then the load will observe an electrical pulse which is half the amplitude of the d.c. voltage and of the order of 100-200 picosecond duration. The width of the electrical pulse is determined by the width of the laser pulse and of the characteristics of the transmission line over which the GaAs is mounted. (Author).

Book Femtosecond Laser Pulses

Download or read book Femtosecond Laser Pulses written by Mounir Khelladi and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this contribution some basic properties of femtosecond laser pulse are summarized. In sections 2.1,Äì2.5 the generation of femtosecond laser pulses via mode locking is described in simple physical terms. In section 2.6 we deal with measurement of ultrashort laser pulses. The characterization of ultrashort pulses with respect to amplitude and phase is therefore based on optical correlation techniques that make of the short pulse itself. In section 3 we start with the linear properties of ultrashort light pulses. However, due to the large bandwidth, the linear dispersion is responsible for dramatic effects. To describe and manage such dispersion effects a mathematical description of an ultrashort laser pulse is given first before we continue with methods how to change the temporal shape via the frequency domain. The chapter ends with a paragraph of the wavelet representation of an ultrashort laser pulse.
