Download or read book Analysis of Laterally Loaded Piles in Multilayered Soil Deposits written by Dipanjan Basu and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses on the development of a new method of analysis of laterally loaded piles embedded in a multi-layered soil deposit treated as a three-dimensional continuum. Assuming that soil behaves as a linear elastic material, the governing differential equations for the deflection of laterally loaded piles were obtained using energy principles and calculus of variations. The differential equations were solved using both the method of initial parameters and numerical techniques. Soil resistance, pile deflection, slope of the deflected pile, bending moment and shear force can be easily obtained at any depth along the entire pile length. The results of the analysis were in very good agreement with three-dimensional finite element analysis results. The analysis was further extended to account for soil nonlinearity. A few simple constitutive relationships that allow for modulus degradation with increasing strain were incorporated into the analysis. The interaction of piles in groups was also studied.

Download or read book Essentials of Offshore Structures written by D.V. Reddy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-06-24 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essentials of Offshore Structures: Framed and Gravity Platforms examines the engineering ideas and offshore drilling platforms for exploration and production. This book offers a clear and acceptable demonstration of both the theory and application of the relevant procedures of structural, fluid, and geotechnical mechanics to offshore structures. It makes available a multitude of "solved problems" and "sample problems to solve" which give readers a strong understanding of the analysis and design of steel-framed and base-supported concrete gravity offshore structures. The book highlights sensible engineering applications for offshore structural design, research, and development; it can also be useful to those working in the design industry. The user will have a detailed overview of the various structures used in the offshore environment and the preliminary costing factors that will influence their choice for the site. Analytical principles emphasized in the book will help the user to clearly comprehend the various issues that need to be taken into account in the analysis and design of an offshore structure, using the API code. The book includes extensive worked-out problems and sample problems for use by the students and instructors, with a Solution Manual. The seabed pile/gravity foundation analyses and design are clearly outlined with their embedment characteristics and problems worked out. A global description of environmental forces has been given that includes those due to wave, wind, current, tides, earthquakes, ice floe/sheet action, and limit ice-load on Arctic structures. The book outlines the various factors that influence the material choice for offshore structures including fatigue and corrosion of the platforms in the ocean environment. Separate chapters detail the factors that influence the pile embedment and concrete gravity foundation characteristics, material choice including fatigue and corrosion, estimation of ocean environmental forces that will be exerted on the offshore structures, and the analysis fundamentals that the reader needs to possess. The last two chapters give detailed insights into the analysis and design of framed and concrete gravity platform offshore structures using API code procedures. Overall, this book is a comprehensive presentation of the analysis and design of steel and concrete offshore structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One-of-a-kind coverage on the fundamentals of foundation analysis and design Analysis and Design of Shallow and Deep Foundations is a significant new resource to the engineering principles used in the analysis and design of both shallow and deep, load-bearing foundations for a variety of building and structural types. Its unique presentation focuses on new developments in computer-aided analysis and soil-structure interaction, including foundations as deformable bodies. Written by the world's leading foundation engineers, Analysis and Design of Shallow and Deep Foundations covers everything from soil investigations and loading analysis to major types of foundations and construction methods. It also features: * Coverage on computer-assisted analytical methods, balanced with standard methods such as site visits and the role of engineering geology * Methods for computing the capacity and settlement of both shallow and deep foundations * Field-testing methods and sample case studies, including projects where foundations have failed, supported with analyses of the failure * CD-ROM containing demonstration versions of analytical geotechnical software from Ensoft, Inc. tailored for use by students in the classroom
Download or read book Soil Behavior Around Laterally Loaded Piles written by H. L. Gill and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field tests were performed to study the horizontal load-displacement characteristics of natural soil deposits and to associate these characteristics with the behavior of laterally loaded piles. The ultimate objective of the tests was to acquire information essential for the design of laterally loaded soil-supported structures. Three soil conditions were considered: (1) bay mud with a desiccated crust in its natural dry state, (2) bay mud submerged within the area of testing, and (3) a hydraulic fill of granular material classified as SP by the unified soil classification system. Segmental pile tests were performed with three sizes of laterally loaded segments and at various depths below ground surface in the bay mud. (Similar tests in the hydraulic fill were covered in a previous NCEL report.) Lateral load tests on full-scale piles from 4 to 16 inches in diameter were performed at each test site. Theoretical information, available soil data, and results of the segmental pile tests were compared and combined to establish representative lateral load-displacement relationships for the soil at any depth at the three sites by using rectangular hyperbolas. Theoretical predictions of the response of laterally loaded piles were made using these relationships, and the results were compared with data obtained during the lateral load tests on piles. Experimental data and theoretical predictions compared favorably. (Author).
