Book A General History of Europe Vol 1

Download or read book A General History of Europe Vol 1 written by James Harvey Robinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General History of Europe, Vol. 1: Europe Before the Eighteenth Century; Brief Course It is obvious that in order to make room for all this new and essential material it has been impossible to include all the events which have usually been found in a general history. The task of selection is a difficult one. It is fair to ask the reader who is disturbed by the omission of some familiar name or topic to con sider what portion of the present narrative he would discard in favor of the incident he has in mind. In the matter of perspective it will be noted that less than half of the history is devoted to the story of the Western world down to'the Sixteenth century. Nearly a quarter of the space is assigned to the last fifty years. This corresponds to a growing demand that we should study the past in the interest of the present. The illustrations have been chosen with especial care, and the legends furnish much information which could not have been added to the text without complicating the narrative. The questions at the ends of the chapters will serve as a review and assist the student in summarizing his knowledge. Questions which cannot be answered from the text have sometimes been added in the hope of stimulating the student to carry on a little investigation of his own and to make some application of what he has learned. Book The General History and State of Europe Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The General History and State of Europe Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Voltaire Voltaire and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The General History and State of Europe, Vol. 2 My method of studying history was calculated for my own use, and not for the public, whom I never intended to trouble with my thoughts on this subject. At length a lady, the ornament of her age and sex, whose extensive genius embraced every subject, had a mind to learn history along with me, though she had conceived as great a dislike to it at first as Father Mallebranche, because, like him, she had great abilities for geometry and metaphysics. "What signifies it," said she, "to a Frenchwoman like me, who live here in a rural retirement, to know that Egil succeeded King Haquin in the kingdom of Sweden or that Ottoman was the son of Ortogrul? With pleasure I have read the Greek and Roman histories; because they exhibited pictures to my mind drawn at full length, which fixed my attention. But I have not been yet able to go through any one large history of our modern nations: for I hardly see any thing in them but confusion, a multitude of trivial events, without any order or connection; a thousand battles no way decisive, and in which I did not even so much as learn the weapons they made use of to destroy one another. I therefore renounced so dry and unprofitable a study, which overloads, without improving the mind." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book History of Europe Ancient and Medieval

Download or read book History of Europe Ancient and Medieval written by James Henry Breasted and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Europe, Ancient and Medieval: Earliest Man, the Orient, Greece and Rome General European history is one of the most perplexing sub jects to deal with in the high school. It seems absolutely essen tial that boys and girls should have some knowledge of the whole past of mankind without that they can have no real understand ing of the world in which they live, for the simple reason that the present can only be explained by the past. The older historical manuals were, in the main, short accounts of past events; but it is really past conditions and past institutions and past ideas that are best worth knowing about. The older books tended, more over, to give too much attention to the remote past and too little information in regard to recent history, so that there was little chance of the pupil's realizing the vital bearing of the past on the present. The aim of these two volumes is to avoid the defects of the older books, first, by frankly subordinating the mere happenings of the past to a clear statement of the conditions under which men lived for long periods, of the ideas which they held, and of the man ner in which conditions and ideas have undergone great changes in man's slow rise from his original savage estate; secondly, by devoting about half of the work, namely, Volume II, to the past hundred and fifty years, which concern us most immediately. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General History of Europe: From the Beginning of the Sixteenth Century to the Peace of Paris, in 1815, With Addenda, Bringing the History Down to 1840 From the time of their conversion to Christianity, the semi-barbarous nations which were spread over the north and middle of Europe had been making Slow but steady progress in civilization and the refinements of social life, chiefly, if not altogether, under the influence Of the church. Learning, arts and sciences had been introduced by her ministers their buildings were the first specimens of architecture; they were the literati, the repositories of all archives, and as such Often made umpires and arbiters by the rude warriors, who, when not called to the field by their liege lord, were almost con stantly at variance with some neighbouring baron. Among them the church soon assumed a feudal form, and the Pope, as paramount head of the church, was appealed to as the liege lord of Christendom, by a necessary consequence of the de velopment of the feudal idea. This power was used on the whole for the general good, and many a war was stopped by a decision of the Holy See, which now may excite surprise. But it was not only between prince and prince, or baron and baron, that the church exercised this authority. The cry Of the oppressed or Of the serf procured her interference, and it was seldom ineffectual. In her bosom rank was forgotten: the peasant might become primate or even pope, and as many did, their natural efforts were to elevate the lower classes. Book Europe Since 1815 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Europe Since 1815 Classic Reprint written by Charles Downer Hazen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-17 with total page 922 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Europe Since 1815 Tn]: purpose of this book is the presentation of the history of Europe since the downfall of Napoleon. Needless to say, only the broader lines of the evolution of so crowded a cen tury can be traced in a single volume. I have, moreover, omitted many subjects, frequently described, in order to give a fuller treatment to those which, in my opinion, are more important. I have endeavored to explain the internal development of the various nations, and their external rela tions in so far as these have been vital or deeply formative. I have also attempted to preserve a reasonable balance be tween the different periods of the century and to avoid the danger of over-emphasis. The great tendencies of the century, the transference of power from oligarchies to democracies, the building up of nations like Germany and Italy and the Balkan states which was the product of long trains of causes, of sharp, decisive events, and of the potent activity of commanding person alities, the gradual expansion of Europe and its insistent and growing pressure upon the world outside, shown in so many ways and so strikingly in this age of imperialism and world-politics, the increasing consciousness in our day of the urgency of economic and social problems, all these and other tendencies will, I trust, emerge from the following pages, with clearness and in just proportion. While giving the essential facts of universal history, he aims, above all, to describe the formation and political development of the states of Europe, and to indicate the historical causes of their present condition and mutual relations. Download or read book East and West Through Fifteen Centuries Vol 1 of 4 written by George Frederick Young and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from East and West Through Fifteen Centuries, Vol. 1 of 4: Being a General History From B. C. 44 to A. D. 1453 And although in a comparatively short history general features rather than details must necessarily be chie y attempted, yet one compensating advantage is gained which is a very real one. For in such a history a general perspective is obtained, which is not possible when the events in the various countries of Western Europe, those in what was once the eastern half of the Roman Empire, and those in England,1 have all to be studied in different books. It is difficult to give the history of so long a period in a condensed way without making it dull and uninteresting. I have endeavoured to avoid this result (at the risk of a charge of unevenness) by going from time to time into detail regarding particular episodes while these occasional glimpses into the circumstances and life of the time enable the reader to picture the same in the case of other episodes which of necessity have been more brie y narrated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russell's History of Modern Europe Epitomised: Forming a Complete d104-Book of Modern History Within the compass of this volume the reader is presented with an epitome of Russell's larger work, upon the History of Modern Europe. It remains the favourite guide to a knowledge of the various subjects of which it treats; and has very recently been recom mended as a text-book by the Government Civil Service Commissioners and the Earl of Clarendon. No modern work enjoys a similar reputation, and it is in all respects a safe authority. Every fact and the date of all the events recorded in these pages have been verified, original matter has been introduced, and the entire work submitted to the most careful revision. In epitomising this valuable book of reference the editor has endeavoured to give as fair a View of the leading details of modern history, as was possible Within the limits. The more interesting portions of the sub ject, that stand out in bold and full relief on the map of the past, have been described at greater length, while less important matters have been abridged, without, however, interrupting the thread of the narrative. In fact the editor's aim has been to supply what has long been wanting in English literature - a Handbook, in which the chief events of Modern History are set forth in a clear, concise, and intelligent form.
