Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Smut's Message to South Wales General Smuts, who was received with loud and prolonged cheering, said: Mr. Nicholas, ladies and gentlemen, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the reception which you have given me here to-night. I was invited to attend and address a meeting at Tonypandy, and instead of having a meeting, this has turned out from Cardiff to here one of the greatest demonstrations I have ever seen in my life. (Applause.) Ladies and gentlemen, I thank you for what I have seen, and, I may add reverently, I thank God for what I have seen, because I have seen that the heart of Wales beats true. (Applause.) After three years of the agonising loss and suffering caused by this war, the hearts of this little Nation beat true. The hammer strokes of fate have not made you falter, but they have proved your metal. (Cheers.) Just eighteen years ago, I left Pretoria to go into another war. That war lasted for three years. For three years I was, figuratively speaking, up to my neck in it. The position I took up, and still take up, is that that war was a war for freedom. It was a war of a small Nation against the biggest Nation in the World. We fought to the bitter end (Cheers), until all our men, women and children were either in the field or in concentration camps at home or overseas, and then we gave in. We lost our liberty, but we soon got our liberty back again. (Cheers.) By Gods Providence what seemed to be lost to us was restored to us in a very short number of years, and, when that great result had been achieved, I never thought I would spend another three years in waging the same struggle over again. Book Reappraising the Life and Legacy of Jan C Smuts

Download or read book Reappraising the Life and Legacy of Jan C Smuts written by David Boucher and published by UJ Press. This book was released on with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the authors cover both familiar and unfamiliar themes. One of the principal themes running throughout the book addresses head-on the deficiency in the literature highlighted by Saul Dubow, namely, the question of racism and Smuts’s reluctance to implement ‘native’ policies that may have averted future problems, rather than postpone them. We see throughout, a gap between the rhetoric and policy, and between policy and practice in its implementation. Amongst the familiar themes that are reappraised, are Smuts’s successes and failures in policies and leadership, domestically and internationally. ‘This wide-ranging volume re-evaluates myriad aspects of Smuts’ life, philosophy, political career and legacy. An important and timely book exploring one of South Africa’s most consequential and controversial leaders.’ Luc-Andre Brunet – Contemporary International History, The Open University. The book is a great contribution to South African cultural and social history. With the military element covered in other publications, the editors and authors have focussed on the less well-trodden aspects of Smuts’s history including but not limited to discussions on the atomic bomb, counter-revolution, film, early cabinets, racialism, trusteeship, ‘greatness’, political philosophy, racial segregation, and myth-making. The editors have skilfully continued the longer political discussion, reflecting on the myth and legacy of a prominent South African - Smuts. Antonio Garcia, Stellenbosch University, coauthor of Botha, Smuts and the First World War, co-founder Underground Strategy.

Book The Decision to Disarm Germany

Download or read book The Decision to Disarm Germany written by Lorna S. Jaffe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-08 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985 The Decision to Disarm Germany offers a fresh approach to Britain’s First World War and Paris Peace Conference policy on the question of German military disarmament. It offers interpretations based on extensive research into unpublished records and private papers and provides important new conclusions about British policy. The book shows the interaction of domestic concerns and strategic considerations in the wartime development of British thinking on the issue of post-war German disarmament and in the post-Armistice formulation and implementation of Britain’s German disarmament policy. It establishes the crucial interrelationship in British thinking and policy between German disarmament and general disarmament. It also shows the interwar consequences of wartime attitudes and peace conference policy.
