Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General Sketch of Political History From the Earliest Times History is apt to present itself, not only to the youthful mind, as a haphazard collection of events grouped round a few interesting personalities, the groups of events being unconnected. A stage in advance of this is reached when we realise that English or Roman or Greek history is the story of the progress of a nation in which interesting personalities play only a part. At a third stage we dis cover that all history is the story of the progress of the human race, in which individual nations play only a part that the separate histories are not isolated, but act on and are acted on by others that the history of one period is the outcome of the preceding ages, as the history of the future will be the outcome of the history of the present. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Sketch of History The object of the present series is to put forth clear and correct views of history in simple language, and in the smallest space and cheapest form in which it could be done. It is meant in the first place for schools; but it is often found that a book for schools proves useful for other readers as well, and it is hoped that this may be the case with the little books the first instalment of which is now given to the world. The present volume is meant to be introductory to the whole course. It is intended to give, as its name implies, a general sketch of the history of the civilized world, that is, of Europe and of the lands which have drawn their civilization from Europe. Its object is to trace out the general relations of different periods and different countries to one another, without going minutely into the affairs of any particular country, least of all into those of our own. This is an object of the first importance, for, without clear notions of general history, the history of particular countries can never be rightly understood. Book The Pictorial History of the American Revolution

Download or read book The Pictorial History of the American Revolution written by Robert Sears and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pictorial History of the American Revolution: With a Sketch of the Early History of the Country No portion of the would's history can be more interesting to the present generation, than that recorded in this volume; and although of comparatively recent occurrence, it has acquired by neglect much of the freshness and fascination of novelty. The American Revolution is an event calculated to exercise a great influence on the present and future destinies of other nations. To write an authentic "History of the American Revolution," is no light, irresponsible task. We have endeavored to be impartial, and to be careful that no fact should be distorted, or receive a false coloring. Where, as is frequently the case, a considerable difference exists between various authorities, we have endeavored to exercise an unbiased judgment, and to adopt that statement which appeared on the whole, most consistent with Truth. The great principles of civil and religious freedom, the contest for which, in America, aroused the slumbering nations of Europe, can not fail engaging our ardent admiration; and every Friend of Human Rights, at the present day, can have no hesitation in adopting the words of the immortal Chatham, "I rejoice that they have resisted." At this moment, the whole English nation, which then, with a few honorable exceptions, was willing to aid her rulers in trampling on the necks of her transatlantic sons, is now sealing her approval of the principles which actuated American Patriots, by her own efforts to establish the truth, that "Taxation, without representation, is tyranny." In the preparation of a volume like the present, however, it is impossible to give universal satisfaction. Is it not enough that our fathers suffered, without the strife being bequeathed, as an heirloom, to their children? Wisdom suffers antipathies to die with the generation which has fostered them; and we believe that, were it not for the noxious influence of a portion of the periodical press, both in America and England, the only rivalry between the two greatest countries on the face of the globe would be, in the knowledge and practice of those principles of moral and political science, which are adapted to promote the happiness and welfare of mankind at large. History requires a distant eminence, from which to take an impartial view of the character and transactions of the recording pen: but little more than half a century has now elapsed since the Colonists first asserted their independence; and the generation, whose arduous struggles achieved so important a result, has passed away to the silent tomb. To give a just and impartial view of the rise, progress, and establishment of the American Republic, has been the design of the work. The editor has aimed to do justice without asperity; to applaud patriotism, but not to justify its excesses; to condemn tyranny, but not to overlook the virtues of many of its instruments; and to exhibit the kindly prospect of the future, more strongly than the irritating aspect of the past. The study of History can not be appreciated too highly; it tells to the youth of our country a story full of wisdom, and replete with many a moral - it shows the influence and success of honor and virtue - that vice and dishonor go hand in hand together; and it excites them to noble deeds of patriotism, and calls upon them to do all, and suffer all, for their country. To the Youth of America, especially, the present Narrative is invaluable. It tells the price at which all their present rights were purchased - it teaches them their incomparable value; and thus renders those in whose hands the destinies of America are hereafter to be intrusted, alive to every encroachment upon them. It relates to a country of greater extent, resources, and beauty, than is possessed by any other single nation under heaven; and to a people, of recent origin indeed, but developing immense powers, and making

Book excerpt: Excerpt from War-Time Sketches: Historical and Otherwise The following papers, written by Mrs. Dimitry while Historian of the "Stonewall Jackson Chapter" of New Orleans, were intended not solely to amuse and interest, but primarily to set forth in correct form historic events of the war of l861-'65, and further to preserve and hand down to an interested posterity incidents semi-biogrpahical which otherwise would have passed into oblivion. The author has derived her data not alone from written history, but largely from the lips of those who were participants in that memorable struggle - men who had been comrades of Mumford, confreres of Benjamin, and survivors of the ill-fated Louisiana. Material for the sketches of social life were drawn from the reminiscences of war-time women, mostly members of the Chapter, and all are based upon incidents occurring in real life. They shed side-lights upon the manners, customs and dress of that troublous period and reflect in their shining depths the high courage and quick wit of the women of the Southland. As a woman of the sixties Mrs. Dimitry herself writes in propria persona for she was one of the signers of those "fair Confederate bank notes," serving the Confederate government until its downfall. Born of splendid Southern lineage, a Mississippian, but of the Stuart family of Virginia and cousin to that chevalier Stuart "sans peur and sans reproche," she was qualified both by birth and experience to write feelingly and in authentic fashion. As the wife and intellectual helpmate of Prof. John Dimitry, she lived in an atmosphere of culture and scholarship. Professor Dimitry came of a family of educators and literary folk and was himself an historian of considerable merit, notable among his works being a "School History and Geography of Louisiana" and "The Confederate Military History of Louisiana." In this connection we can not refrain from quoting his peerless epitaph to Albert Sidney Johnston, engraved in the tomb of the Army of Tennessee. Metairie Cemetery, New Orleans. In its epigrammatic terseness of phrase, beauty of diction and poetic depth of feeling it deserves to rank as a classic. Book Sketch of the Life and Services of General Lewis Cass of Ohio Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sketch of the Life and Services of General Lewis Cass of Ohio Classic Reprint written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketch of the Life and Services of General Lewis Cass, of Ohio The father of General Cass was a native of New Hampshire, who entered the army as a private soldier the day after the battle of Lexington, and remained in the service during the whole war, till the dissolution of the army. He rose successively through the grades of corporal, sergeant, ensign, and lieutenant, to be captain, and was in the battles of Bunker Hill, Long Island, Monmouth, Brandywine, Germantown, in the expedition of Sullivan, in the actions between Gates and Burgoyne, and at the Siege of Yorktown. After the organization of the new constitution, he was appointed a major in the western army, and served under St. Clair and Wayne, till the year 1800, when he resigned and resigned to private life, upon the Muskingum, when he closed his useful and honorable career in the year 1830. A just tribute to his merit was paid upon two public occasions by two of the most distinguished literary men, who do honor to our country. By Mr. Everett in his remarks at Boston, upon the occasion of the visit of General Jackson, and recently by Mr. Bancroft, in a lecture at Philadelphia, when this accomplished historian turned to General Cass, who was present, and in an extemporaneous and most happy allusion, brought to notice the character and patriotic services of his father. His son, Lewis Cass, was born at Exeter, New Hampshire, where he was educated by a celebrated teacher, Doctor Abbot. At the age of seventeen he left that place and removed to Marietta, in the State of Ohio, where he studied law, and was admitted to the Bar, at the very close of the Territorial govern-vernment. After being admitted, he practised law at Marietta, Chilicothe, Zanesville, and other places, till the year 1806, when he was elected a member of the Legislature. He served during the eventful session, when the plans of Burr occupied so much of the public attention. There was a mystery about them which alarmed the general government exceedingly, and in fact, every man said to his neighbor, what is the object of all this, and who are engaged in it? Some thought the design was to sever the western from the Eastern States, and others that it was to take possession of New Orleans, seize the specie there, and push on to Mexico, to conquer that Kingdom. The alarm of Mr. Jefferson may be imagined from the fact, that he sent a special agent, Mr. Graham, to the Western States, to put himself in communication with the Executives and Legislatures, and to urge upon them the most prompt and vigilant measures for the defeat of the enterprise. Among other extraordinary powers granted upon this occasion was one to Mr. Tiffin, then Governor of Ohio, authorising him to remove "any postmaster west of the mountains, suspected of being unfriendly to the unity of this Republic." A special message from the Governor to the Legislature, brought this matter before them - and Mr. Cass was placed upon the committee to which it was referred. This committee put themselves in communication with Mr. Graham and Mr. Cass, drafted a law, which authorised the Governor to call out the militia, and to arrest all persons engaged in any warlike enterprise. The promptness of the Legislature was met by the spirit of the public. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Outlines General History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outlines General History Classic Reprint written by Frank Moore Colby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines General History History defined. History is the record of past events in the life of mankind. In detailing these events, however, it con cerns itself with their relation, and seeks to point out the connection of cause and effect that exists between them. A bare catalogue of unrelated facts, though true in themselves, would not make history in the modern sense. There must be some definite principle on which the selection of the facts is based. This principle is that a fact, in order to have bistori cal value, must help to explain what goes before or what comes after in the life of a people. Kinds of History. - It is clear that the past life of mankind may be regarded from different points of view. Thus, if the special purpose is to show how men have advanced in knowl edge from age to age, and what influences have quickened their minds or changed their modes of thought, the narrative is called Intellectual History. If the object is to point out the changes which have taken place in men's ideas of right and wrong, and to trace the development of moral standards, the work is termed a History of Morals. Political History deals with the external events in the life of a nation, showing its varying relations to other nations and to its own government. Constitutional History has to do with changes in the form and principles of government, and in the character and administra tion of law; Economic History, with the past conditions of a people in respect to the possession and acquisition of wealth. So the particular field to which the narrative is confined de termines how the history is to be classified. It is very difficult, however, to keep these departments distinct, as events which properly fall within the scope of one department have often a very important bearing on those which belong to another. A history which gives anything like a complete narrative of past events must investigate the facts pertaining to all sides of a nation's life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in General History In teaching history in higher grades, three points must always be in mind: first, to give each student independent work; next, to subject the results of solitary, individual thought to the freest criticism and discussion in the class-room; last of all, the accepted results of the collective labor must be arranged in compact and logical order, and stowed away in memory. By the' solitary study of the individual, the mind gains power and originality; by the free lance in a free field of class-room work, the mind gains courage, sharpness, speed, and generous temper; by the strict, close sifting of study and discussion, it gains concentration, clearness, and breadth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketches, Vol. 2 Under these circumstances, perhaps, it is fair to lay down that, while every care must be taken against the introduction of new, or the omission of existing ideas, in translating the original text, yet, in a book intended for general reading, faithfulness may be considered simply to consist in expressing in English the sense of the original the actual words of the latter being viewed mainly as directions into its sense, and scholarship being necessary in order to gain the full insight into that sense which they afford; and next, that, where something must be sacri ficed, precision or intelligibility, it is better in a popular work to be understood by those who are not critics, than to be applauded by those who are.
