Immediate needs and close surroundings are what interest him. It is not until he has learned about these, and has followed back to their sources and causes some of the phenomena which have seemed simple and matter of fact, that he begins to realize that the distant forces have more effect upon his existence than the near-by, everyday happenings. Perhaps it is well, then, at the beginning of science study, to take his point of view, and lead him to follow each apparently simple need or desire, and to arouse in him the habit of seeking for a cause, and looking beyond the present and immediate to the future and the ultimate. It may be truly said that in a General Science course, "All roads lead to Rome," for the course may be commenced anywhere, and it will lead to a study of all science. In fact, if the pun may be forgiven, in a General Science course, "All roads lead to roam," and the pupil, after he is started, needs but to be guided. That is the purpose of this book. It is not easy to teach a course in general science successfully. There is always the temptation to specialize in some particular part, usually the part which the teacher likes best, and about which he knows most. If this temptation is not resisted, the course ceases to be general. The value of a General Science course is twofold. Without discussion of the advisability of a general course, therefore, the author would state her reasons for the wide choice of subjects considered in this book. For pupils who complete a high school course, the study of general science should be an introduction to any ordinary high school work in biology, physics, chemistry, geology, and astronomy. No pupil can study all of these subjects, but he can learn that they are not separate sciences but branches of science. Whatever branch he studies later, he will find that the course in general science has given him the elements of the other divisions which dovetail into that branch. To suit the needs of pupils who are not able to finish a high school course, this first year science course must present a comprehensive view, though with no attempt to be complete. "The proper study of mankind" for the pupil at the age of twelve to fourteen years seems to be the world of which he is a part. The fact that the earth, important as it is to man, is not the only nor the greatest body in the universe; that it is not an independent body sufficient unto itself; and that its influence extends to other bodies - these are some of the subjects taken up in the first chapters. Such mathematical problems as it did present could be solved by arithmetic and were not so difficult as to detract from the interest of the book. Since that time applied science has been greatly extended, so that it touches our common lives at more points than formerly. Mr. Daniel R. But in General Science as a high school subject selections of topics for study are made from any and all of the secondary school sciences. These topics are studied for the general purpose of giving scientific explanations to whatever affects daily life in so far as they lend themselves readily to elementary scientific discussions. Some theory is given as needed in these explanations, but there is little or no regard to whether the facts and explanations have to do with any one science or another. Sufficient experimental phenomena are to be provided in laboratory exercises and classroom demonstrations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of General Science Never before in this country has there been so insistent a demand for a more thorough and more comprehensive system of instruction in practical science. Forced by recent events to compare our education with that of other nations, we have suddenly become aware of our negligence in this matter. Now industrial and educational experts and commissions are united in demanding a change. While on the whole there has been a steady increase in the amount of time given to science work in the secondary and elementary schools, the attention paid to it, especially in the elementary schools, has been some what spasmodic, and its administration has been more or less chaotic. This is not due to lack of interest on the part of school officials but to their dissatisfaction with the methods of instruction employed. There is no doubt that superintendents would gladly introduce more science if they felt sure that the educational results would be commensurate with the time expended. This is indicated by a recent survey of about one hundred and fifty cities in seven states of the Central West. The survey shows that two-thirds of them have nature study in the elementary schools and that all are re quiring some science for graduation from the high school. The average high school is offering three years of science. Since 1900 there has been a greater increase in the percentage of students enrolled in science in the high schools than in any other subject with the one exception of English. Moreover, greater attention is now being paid to the training of teachers in methods of presentation of science. X The chief needs in science instruction today are a more efficient organization of the course of study with a View to its socialization and practical application, and a clear-cut realization on the part of the teacher of the aims, the principles of organization, and the methods of instruction; it is to meet these needs that this series is being issued. The books attempt to present such generalizations of science as the average pupil should carry away from his school experience and to organize them for the preparation of the teacher and for presenta tion to the class. The volumes will therefore be of three kinds: (1) source books with accompanying field and laboratory guides for the use of students in normal schools and schools of education, and of teachers, (2) pupils' texts and notebooks, and (3) books on the teaching of the various science subjects. In the first the material will be organized with special reference to the training of the teacher and the most effective methods of presenting the subject to students. In the second the matter will be simplified, graded, and arranged in such a way that the books will serve as guides in science work for the pupils themselves. Moreover, they will furnish texts for the grades and high school that will simplify the teacher's task of presentation and will assure well-tried and well-organized experiences, on the part of the pupil, with natural objects. This series of texts for elementary and secondary schools will have dependent continuity and the subject-matter will gradually increase in difficulty to accord with the increasing capacity of the pupils. It will furnish a unified course in science. The third type of book is for the teacher and deals with the history, aims, principles of organization, and methods of instruction in the several sciences.
