Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Physiology, an Outline of the Science of Life The plan of the present book first assumed fixed form during a journey which I made in the year 1890 to different points on the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea for the purpose of making comparative-physiological researches. After my return my uni versity lectures in Jena gave me an opportunity to present the collected material in connected form. But the greater part of the labour remained to be performed, and in the summer of 1892 I began the writing of the book. Although for nearly ten years I have been busy with the problems of general physiology and have endeavoured to contribute something to their solution, so much labour has been associated with the collection, examination, selec tion completion, and arrangement of the much scattered material, that the book has progressed slowly - and with varied feelings on, my part I have often wondered whether the result would accord with the enthusiasm and love with which the task was undertaken. Only the criticism of my colleagues can decide this. It is not to be expected that a book which brings together for the first time in a unified form a mass of material hitherto regarded as hetero geneous, shall upon its first appearance pretend to completeness. I cherish no illusions that I have succeeded more than approx1 mately. I am fully aware that many faults and errors must have crept in, and these I beg my colleagues in friendliness to correct. It has afforded me especial satisfaction that one of my American colleagues, Professor Frederic S Lee, of New York, in an address before the New York Academy of Sciences has developed simultaneously and independently the same ideas regarding the claims of modern physiology as are presented in detail by myself in the first chapter of this book. These ideas have also been expressed by me elsewhere, especially in an article in the Monist (chicago, If a book is to reach a wide circle of readers, its language must be neither too technical nor too prosaic. I have endeavoured to comply with this requirement. I wished to write something that would appeal first to my fellow physiologists, and offer them, besides certain new facts and ideas, a summary of our scattered knowledge. But at the same time I wished the work to give to any interested scientific reader, whether a student of medicine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Human Physiology The living body contains no other elements and forces than those found in the inanimate world. There is no special Vital Force. The properties of life are dependent upon the chemical and physical properties of the living sub stance. The composition of this substance is not known; in fact, it is a question whether it is chemically an indi vidual substance or a mixture of different bodies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lines of Physiology, Being an Introduction to the Science of Life: Written in Popular Language, Designed for the Use of Common Schools, Academies, and General Readers To the earlier editions of this little work, several pages of prefatory matter appeared requisite, in order, partly, to apologize for the introduction of a new candidate for pcpu lar favour, in a department of science for which several introductory text-books adapted to the use of schools and unprofessional readers had been previously produced, and, partly, to defend the fitness of Physiology as a branch of elementary education, not only for male children, but for females also. Book Principles of General Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of General Physiology Classic Reprint written by William Maddock Bayliss and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of General Physiology IN the preparation of courses of lectures dealing with various physiological processes I have found considerable difficulty, and spent much time, in the extraction from books and original papers, many of them not biological, of material of fundamental importance in the proper treatment of the subject. The mechanism of reactions in heterogeneous systems may be mentioned. It seemed to me, therefore, that the results of this labour might be of use to others, whose work does not allow them sufficient time to read articles which do not appear to bear upon their particular domain of science. In arranging these facts, however, it became manifest that a somewhat wider treatment would be of more value, so that the book might be of service to all desiring a general, elementary, treatment of what may be called abstract physiology, as distinct from the applied physiology required by the agricultural, medical, or veterinary student for the purpose of his profession. In extenuation of my conduct in producing a work on physiology for the use, as I venture to hope, of all those who have any interest in science, I should like to quote a few words by Huxley to be found in his address, On the Educational Value of the Natural History Sciences (huxley, 1902-1903, p. 59 - see Bibliography). He gives an answer to the question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to General Physiology: With Practical Exercises To write a satisfactory text-book for those commencing the study of a science is well known to be of greater difficulty than to write one for advanced students. In fact, it would probably be true to say that the former task is a severe test of the author's comprehension of the subject. I venture to hope that the thought given to the present work may not be found to have been in vain. Any readers who may find parts of it expressed insufficiently clearly are requested to help the author with suggestions. It was found to require much consideration to decide what should be omitted. My firm conviction is, that a thorough understanding of the main fundamental conceptions is of more value than a superficial acquaintance with a large number of facts and theories, even if it leads, for the moment, to the omission of what many may regard as essential. The student will probably be surprised to find how many of the more detailed descriptions follow naturally from a knowledge of a few general principles, when these are clearly grasped. For this reason, more space has been given to certain elementary facts of physics and chemistry than might be supposed necessary; but it has been my experience that, although a student may have attended good courses in these sciences, he docs not readily apply the knowledge to physiological problems. Moreover, there arc some things essential to physiology, but often regarded as outside the scope of an elementary course in the preliminary sciences. I intentionally lay myself open to the charge of inserting matter that is not, strictly speaking, physiological. The rather "intensive" treatment sometimes adopted leads to what some may regard as an excursion into advanced regions. But this is unavoidable when the conception cannot be passed over without risk of error. In another way, the manner of presentation adopted may meet with objection. Download or read book A Text Book of Physiology Vol 1 of 2 written by John Gray M'Kendrick and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104 Book of Physiology, Vol. 1 of 2: General Physiology Although this work has been modelled to some extent on my "Outlines of Physiology," now out of print, it is essentially a new book, and as it aims at giving a more detailed account of the subject, the title of "Outlines of Physiology" has been abandoned for that of a "d104 Book of Physiology." I have not endeavoured to give anything like an encyclopaedic account of the modern researches that have built up the physiological science of the present time, but rather to weave into a consecutive narrative the main facts and principles of physiology, as these present themselves to my mind, after nearly eighteen years of experience as a teacher of the science. Probably no science is advancing with greater rapidity, if one may form an opinion from the large number of original papers that are announced, month by month, and from the large number of investigators in the physiological laboratories of the Continent, of America, and of our own country. Thus it is year by year becoming more difficult for a teacher to keep abreast of the wave of progress, and still more difficult to assimilate the new facts and to incorporate them with his previous knowledge. Each teacher will also view the subject more especially according to his prodilections for the morphological, the chemical, or the physical side of the science, and it is not easy in the preparation of such a work as this to be impartial and to present the science in all its completeness to the reader. Download or read book A Text Book of Human Physiology Classic Reprint written by Albert Philson Brubaker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-28 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Human Physiology An animal organism in the living condition exhibits a series of phenomena which relate to growth, movement, mentality, and re production. During the period preceding birth, as well as during the period included between birth and adult life, the individual grows in size and complexity from the introduction and assimilation of material from without. Throughout its life the animal exhibits a series of movements, in virtue of which it not only changes the relation Of one part of its body to another, but also changes its posi tion relatively to its environment. If, in the execution of these movements, the parts are directed to the overcoming of opposing forces, such as gravity, friction, cohesion, elasticity, etc., the animal may be said to be doing work. The result of normal growth is the attainment of a physical development that will enable the animal, and, more especially, man, to perform the work necessitated by the nature of its environment and the character of its organization. In man, and probably in lower animals as well, mentality manifests itself as intellect, feeling, and volition. At a definite period in the life of the animal it reproduces itself, in consequence of which the species to which it belongs is perpetuated. The study of the phenomena of growth, movement, mentality, and reproduction constitutes the science of animal physiology. But as these general activities are the resultant of and dependent on the special activities of the individual structures of which an animal body 'is composed, physiology in its more restricted and generally accepted sense is the science which investigates the actions or functions of the individual organs and tissues of the body and the physical and chemic conditions which underlie and determine them.
