To date, structural design in the UK has only acknowledged earthquake loading for nuclear plants and other similar facilities. However, the issue of earthquake design criteria for conventional structures has arisen because of the proposal for a standard European seismic code of building practice. Therefore the Department of the Environment commissioned this study from Ove Arup and Partners to develop an appreciation of seismic risk to the UK insofar as it affects the built environment, and to determine whether seismicity should be taken into account in future planning decisions, and, if so, how. This is their summary report.

Although devastating earthquakes are almost unknown in the area and seismic hazard is not great, the seismic risk grows with the growing size and number of structures in the area. The study of the potential seismic risks, therefore, cannot be neglected any more. The siting and design of offshore platforms and submarine pipelines are controlled by the degree of their vulnerability as well as the seismic hazard. in the region.

Hence assessing hazards and drawing implications for the future is challenging, and how well it can be done heavily depends on the ability to assess the spatiotemporal distribution of past large earthquakes. This book explores some key issues in understanding hazards in slowly deforming areas. Examples include classic intraplate regions, such as Central and Northern Europe, Mongolia, Inner Mongolia, Australia, and North and South America, and regions of widely distributed strain, such as the Tien Shan Mountains in Central Asia. The papers in this volume are grouped into two sections. The first section deals with instrumental and historical earthquake data and associated hazard assessments. The second section covers methods from structural geology, palaeoseismology and tectonic geomorphology, and incorporates field evidence.
