Book excerpt: Charlemagne Tower (1809-1889) was an American lawyer and businessman active in acquiring land in the Schuylkill Valley in Pennsylvania and serving as an officer for coal and railroad companies. He organized and led a company of Union soldiers from Pottsville in a 3-month enlistment during the American Civil War, when he was commissioned as captain. After the war, with sell-off of lands by the Northern Pacific Railroad, he acquired large tracts in the upper Midwest and Northwest. Charlemagne Tower was a giant of his time, leaving an indelible footprint on the history of the United States. He is credited with creating the mining industry in Minnesota, as well as attracting settlers to the area. He was deeply involved in the mining industry in Pennsylvania, and was part of the ascension of the Reading Railroad. Towns in three states are named after him. He served on the board of overseers for Harvard University, and was involved in many business ventures, many of them successful. “PROFESSOR BRIDGES has written a book which is of compelling interest from three points of view: as a story of business adventure, as a study in the character of an eminent entrepreneur, and as a chapter in the economic history of the Northwest. Founded on a large body of previously unused manuscript materials, it supplies elements of vital importance to our knowledge of the development of the iron and steel industry in the United States. The story which Dr. Bridges tells with such scholarly care and narrative verve is one which should interest all students of our past.”—Allan Nevins

Book Young Charles Sumner and the Legacy of the American Enlightenment 1811 1851

Download or read book Young Charles Sumner and the Legacy of the American Enlightenment 1811 1851 written by Anne-Marie Taylor and published by Univ of Massachusetts Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book challenges that long-standing view, offering in its stead the portrait of a man animated more by principle than by impulse or ambition. According to the author, Sumner's reform-minded politics, including his fervent commitment to put an end to slavery, must be understood in the context of a young nation still struggling to live up to the Enlightenment ideals embraced by its founders and embodied in its Constitution." "Focusing on the first forty years of Sumner's life, before he took public office, the volume traces the evolution of his character and thought among Boston's cultural elite."--Jacket.

Book The Emerson Brothers

Download or read book The Emerson Brothers written by Ronald A. Bosco and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Emerson Brothers: A Fraternal Biography in Letters is a narrative and epistolary biography drawn from the unpublished lifelong correspondence exchanged among four brothers: Charles Chauncy, Edward Bliss, Ralph Waldo, and William Emerson. This is an extensive correspondence, for not counting Waldo's previously published letters, there are 768 letters exchanged among the brothers and an additional 483 unpublished letters from the brothers to their aunt Mary Moody Emerson, mother Ruth Haskins Emerson, and Charles' fiancee Elizabeth Hoar, among others. While lesser figures might have faltered under the burden of having been born an Emerson, with social, political, and ecclesiastic roots extending back to the first century of New England settlement, the brothers' letters reveal that all were invigorated by a shared sense of origin and aspired to make a significant reputation for themselves. Across six richly developed chapters, the signal events and friendships that shaped the Emerson brothers' lives are strung together to reveal a remarkable family culture. For the first time, The Emerson Brothers treats the illustrious history of the Emerson family in America as a foreshadowing of expectations the brothers inherited; defines the extent of Waldo's debt to William for his encounter with German Biblical Criticism; develops Charles' and Edward's incredibly promising but ultimately tragic lives; examines the profound emotional and intellectual impact of Aunt Mary on the younger Emersons; considers the three-year courtship between Charles and Elizabeth Hoar in the context of Waldo's own marriages; and studies the brothers' preoccupation with financial security for "the family" (revealing, too, that finances were at least as powerful a motivation behind Waldo's 1832 resignation from Boston's Second Church as were the death of his first wife and his religious doubts). This biography approaches Waldo's inner life in a way that makes him a figure to imagine personally by portraying him in relation to his brothers who are his intellectual equals. It offers an imaginative social and cultural history of one of our oldest and most gifted families, unique players in a period often considered to be the "American Renaissance."
