Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Foundry Practice Once a habit of study is acquired, the learner will work out his own path, and his training will have so increased his powers of observation that his daily experience will call for wider knowledge; when he has attained to this stage he may safely be left alone. It must not be forgotten that even seven years' apprenticeship, with attendance at evening classes and home study, will not make a complete foundryman. Knowledge is not easily gained, and training is never complete. It may be thought that the outline here given is too much for an apprentice after doing a full day's work in the foundry. Naturally, it involves considerable strain, but the authors are advocating no untested scheme. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book General Foundry Practice

Download or read book General Foundry Practice written by William Roxburgh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Foundry Practice: Being a Treatise on General Iron Founding, Job Loam Practice, Moulding and Casting of the Finer Metals, Practical Metallurgy in the Foundry, and Patternmaking From a Moulder's Point of View The whole work is light and practical reading, and is intended to give the greatest amount of information on foundry methods, materials, and metals, with the least possible study. A book such as this, although primarily intended for moulders and founders of every description, is also written for draughtsmen, patternmakers, and the engineering profession in general. As a text book it will be most interesting to many students of metallurgy and users of metals, who either cast or con struct. Nevertheless, to some it may show but little new in founding, and probably something which may be objected to. Still, on the other hand, there may be just as many, nay more, to whom the book may, at least, be a source of relief in times of difficulty, and to such, and all that are interested in the abstruse problems of founding in its many phases is this book specially commended. Book Foundry Practice

Download or read book Foundry Practice written by James M. Tate and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundry Practice: A Treatise on Molding and Casting in Their Various Details In administering the work in foundry practice at the University of Minnesota, the want of a good text book has been a serious disadvantage. The work of the shop and that of the class room should be correlated - shop work should be studied and discussed in the class room, and examples illustrating the various principles underlying good practice should be worked out in the shop. While there have been some excellent books written upon the subject of foundry practice, yet, as a rule, these have been written with the needs of the experienced molder in view rather than those of the beginner. For this reason it is a difficult matter to teach the subject so that the student will acquire an intelligent understanding of its various details. The nomenclature and shop phraseology are not sufficiently elementary for the average beginner to grasp the statement presented, and much time is frequently spent in explaining an author's meaning. The present little treatise has been written with a full knowledge of the problems involved and with the object of lessening some of the difficulties which arise in teaching the subject. The authors are both men of wide experience in foundry practice and its correlated subjects. Mr. Tate is an experienced pattern maker, who has been in charge of the pattern shop at the University of Minnesota for the past fifteen years, and during a part of this time he has also had charge of the work in the foundry. Book The Steel Foundry Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Steel Foundry Classic Reprint written by John Howe Hall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Steel Foundry The tremendous increase in the number of electric furnaces in steel foundries since the first edition of this book was written in 1913, and the refinements in electric furnace practice that have resulted, made a revision of this volume advisable. In these nine years, too, much has been added to our knowledge of moulding sands, heat treatment and a great many other phases of foundry practice, which the author has attempted to outline. The work of revision has, of necessity, been done in what little spare time it has been possible to find, and it is the hope of the author that the result will justify the effort expended. Book A Text Book of Elementary Foundry Practice

Download or read book A Text Book of Elementary Foundry Practice written by William Allyn Richards and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Elementary Foundry Practice: For the Use of Students in Colleges and Secondary Schools IN offering this book to the public, the author would state that upon taking up the work of teaching foundry practice to boys in secondary schools, he was confronted with the great lack of literature on the subject, there being very little of an elementary character suitable for use as a text or a reference work. He has therefore tried to select matter - not too difficult for high school pupils and at the same time sufficiently advanced for the college student - such as will bring out the largest number of principles used in the molder's art; and he has endeavored to make everything so plain 'and practical that even without the direction of an instructor the student can put the patterns into the sand and achieve good results. The patterns chosen may be easily obtained; moreover, as each pattern brings out one or more distinct principles, a student who has completed this course ought to be able, with out further instruction, to produce satisfactory results with any reasonable pattern. Several supplementary exercises should be given to test the grasp of the principles. The author is fully aware that a great deal of work found in ordinary foundries and involving many principles has been omitted, but this has been done only after due consideration of all things involved and discussion with able educators. It is hoped that the ideas herein presented will be of as much value to others engaged in the profession as they have been to the author. He freely acknowledges his indebtedness to various books and periodicals for ideas received therefrom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Foundry Work

Download or read book Foundry Work written by R. E. Wendt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundry Work: A Text on Molding, Dry-Sand Core-Making, and the Melting and Mixing of Metals In preparing this book, it has been the author's aim to provide a suitable text for schools and-colleges. And for use by apprentices in commercial shops. It'is elementary to the extent that the student can grasp the fundamental principles of foundry work, yet deep enough to give a general working knowledge of foundry practice. The book consists of three parts. The first will enable the student to secure a general knowledge of foundry work, of the sizes and types of blast furnaces, and of the making of pig iron. The second provides instructions for practice in molding, coremaking and other parts of foundry work. The third part is devoted to the mixing and melting of metals. The material contained in this volume was Obtained as a direct result of the author's experience in teaching apprentices in commercial shops and engineering students at Purdue University. The information on making coke, mining iron ore, operating blast furnaces, and chemical analysis of iron has been inserted to round out the volume and represents good commercial, practice. For many of the drawings the author is indebted to students taking foundry work under him, and for other illustrations to foundry supply firms. Download or read book Dr Edward Kirk s System of Foundry Practice written by Edward Kirk and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dr. Edward Kirk's System of Foundry Practice: Metallurgy of Foundry Irons and Foundry Practice This iron is the strongest of all the foundry irons and has the most marked tendency for chill when suddenly solidified against a cold chill. It was the only iron used for malleable iron and car wheels for many years, but at the present time the entire output of this iron in a year in this country is not sufficient to supply these foundries for one day, and only a few of the smaller malleable iron and car wheel plants favorably located continue to use it exclusively. Others only use about 10 per cent. To tone up their mixture of other irons, while others have been compelled to abandon its use entirely and use coke iron with steel scrap as a strengthener and chill giver. This iron is so strong that it is cast 1n pig of only about two thirds the width of those of coke iron, and the pigs are notched on both sides to facilitate breaking them for charging and melt ing. All the iron cannon used before the introduction of steel cannon were cast with this iron, and it was frequently termed gun metal. This iron, at the present time, is principally used for chilled rolls alone and in mixtures with coke iron. Outside of the Lake Superior-iron region it is principally graded by fracture indica tions. Download or read book A Practical Treatise on Foundry Irons Classic Reprint written by Edward Kirk and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Foundry Irons This volume has been prepared at the earnest request of many founders seeking practical information on foundry irons and their manipulation in the production of the various lines of castings. It has been the aim of the author to present, in a condensed form, only such matter as is of practical value to the founder and to eliminate as far as possible all theories that have not been established as principles and all laboratory experimental work that has not been fully demonstrated to be useful in actual foundry practice. It has been endeavored to give all useful up-to - date data on the manipulation of Foundry Irons as actually practiced in foundries, by both the old and the new methods; and thus, it is hoped to place before the founder, foundry foreman, moulder and melter such a variety of methods that he cannot fail to oh tain desired results under any and all of the various conditions met with in the manipulation of these irons. Download or read book Dr Edward Kirk s System of Foundry Practice written by Edward Kirk and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dr. Edward Kirk's System of Foundry Practice: Cupola Practice The word "Cupola" covers such a variety of objects that another word should be used in conjunction with it to indicate the object referred to. such as cupola furnace or foundry cupola, but to men familiar with foundry practice the word cupola is sufficient. The cupola, in the melting of iron, has many advantages over any other melting furnace for foundry work. It melts iron with less fuel and more cheaply than any other furnace, and can be run intermittently without any great damage due to expansion and contraction in heating and cooling. Large or small quantities of iron may be melted in the same cupola, and the longer it is kept in blast the smaller the per cent, of fuel required in melting. These advantages have made it the melting furnace almost exclusively used in gray iron foundry practice. Theoretically, a ton of iron can be melted in a cupola with 172 pounds of coke, but in practice 250 pounds are required in long heats, and in short heats 300 pounds. This is due to the same amount of fuel being required for the bed for a short heat as for a long heat. The reverberatory furnace, a limited number of which are used in grey iron foundries in melting for special castings, requires from ten to twenty hundredweight of fuel to melt a ton of iron. The pot furnace, in which the metal is melted in crucibles, requires a ton of fuel to melt a ton of iron.
