Book Legal Institutional and Economic Indicators of Forest Conservation and Sustainable Management

Download or read book Legal Institutional and Economic Indicators of Forest Conservation and Sustainable Management written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This review looks at the Nation's legal, institutional, and economic capacity to promote forest conservation and sustainable resource management. It focuses on 20 indicators of Criterion Seven of the so-called Montreal Process and involves an extensive search and synthesis of information from a variety of sources. It identifies ways to fill information gaps and improve the usefulness of several indicators. It concludes that there is substantial information about the application of such capacities, although that application is widely dispersed among agencies and private interests; which in turn has led to differing interpretations of the indicators. Individual chapters identify a need to further develop the conceptual foundation on which many of the indicators are predicated. While many uncertainties in the type and accuracy of information are brought to light, the review clearly indicates that legal, institutional, and economic capacities to promote sustainability are large and widely available in both the public and private sectors."--P. vi.

This book was released on 2023-11-04 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written with a view to provide readers with a comprehensive guide to the jurisprudence of forest laws in India. The book analyses, discusses and documents, every socially relevant piece of legislation governing forests in India. It traces the history of environmental jurisprudence giving a panoramic view to the existent legislations in India, their coming into being in light of the international developments. The authors discuss the right to environment as a human right, while simultaneously emphasising on the right to nature itself. Forests have assumed a significant position in India’s drive for ecological sustainability. The judges take an active part in the promotion and development of globally recognised concepts of sustainable development, outside government initiatives., a part of Indian environmental conservation framework. Moreover, giving forest sustainability its due importance, the Courts have contributed significantly by discussing the contribution of forests in the developmental process and bringing the issue of sustained use of the forest resource to the fore. Judgments have been delivered 8 highlighting the need for sustained growth practices which compensate for the forest loss and emphasize again and again on the need to conserve and maintain forests. Therefore, the book also embarks upon the judicial pronouncements and their role in exhibiting the rights of forest dwellers via judicial trajectory of these laws

Download or read book Wars in the Woods written by Samuel P. Hays and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2006-11-17 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wars in the Woods examines the conflicts that have developed over the preservation of forests in America, and how government agencies and advocacy groups have influenced the management of forests and their resources for more than a century. Samuel Hays provides an astute analysis of manipulations of conservation law that have touched off a battle between what he terms "ecological forestry" and "commodity forestry." Hays also reveals the pervading influence of the wood products industry, and the training of U.S. Forest Service to value tree species marketable as wood products, as the primary forces behind forestry policy since the Forest Management Act of 1897. Wars in the Woods gives a comprehensive account of the many grassroots and scientific organizations that have emerged since then to combat the lumber industry and other special interest groups and work to promote legislation to protect forests, parks, and wildlife habitats. It also offers a review of current forestry practices, citing the recent Federal easing of protections as a challenge to the progress made in the last third of the twentieth century. Hays describes an increased focus on ecological forestry in areas such as biodiversity, wildlife habitat, structural diversity, soil conservation, watershed management, native forests, and old growth. He provides a valuable framework for the critical assessment of forest management policies and the future study and protection of forest resources.
