Chapter IV provides viewpoints from state higher education officers, representatives of educational associations, professors of higher education, principals, counselors, faculty, and administrators regarding the function and operation of the associate degree. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to produce data and information that inform California Community College decision-makers of: (a) extent of variance in California's associate degree definitions and graduation requirements, and (b) perceptions of curricular leaders regarding the variances. Associate degree definitions and graduation requirements were compiled and analyzed from the 1997-98 catalogs for the 106 institutions. Degrees offered, number of general education units required, level of English and math required, transfer patterns, and general studies degree patterns were compiled in tables. The interpreted data from the catalog research were confirmed by the articulation officers. Chief Instructional Officers and Curriculum Chairs at each college were surveyed regarding the degree variations and graduation requirements. Were the differences considered problems or issues for the California Community College system? The catalog review findings indicated that a quarter of the colleges define the degrees in terms of purpose (transfer or occupational) while three-quarters define the degree by major or discipline. The minimum number of general education units required to earn an associate degree range from the legal minimum of 18 semester units to as many as 41 units. One-third of the colleges require freshman English composition while others accept a course one level below. Titles used for transfer general education programs are the same titles used for non-transfer or general studies programs at other colleges. The AA in Liberal Arts is comprised of transfer general education on some campuses, while it is a general studies degree on others. A majority of the leaders surveyed agreed that the California Community College system should work toward developing common definitions for associate degrees. The leaders supported offering the Associate of Applied Science degree. The study concluded that Associate degrees vary so significantly among the 106 campuses of the California Community College system that there is no common meaning to the degree. Associate degree definitions in California have no relationship to the definitions set by the American Association of Community Colleges. The study recommended that an Associate Degree Task Force be convened to study the issue and present recommendations to the California Community College Board of Governors.

But over time, in-depth study in a major discipline has come to dominate the curricula at many institutions. This evolution of the curriculum has been driven, in part, by increasing specialization in the academic disciplines. There is little doubt that disciplinary specialization has helped produce many of the achievement of the past century. Researchers in all academic disciplines have been able to delve more deeply into their areas of expertise, grappling with ever more specialized and fundamental problems. Yet today, many leaders, scholars, parents, and students are asking whether higher education has moved too far from its integrative tradition towards an approach heavily rooted in disciplinary "silos". These "silos" represent what many see as an artificial separation of academic disciplines. This study reflects a growing concern that the approach to higher education that favors disciplinary specialization is poorly calibrated to the challenges and opportunities of our time. The Integration of the Humanities and Arts with Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in Higher Education examines the evidence behind the assertion that educational programs that mutually integrate learning experiences in the humanities and arts with science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) lead to improved educational and career outcomes for undergraduate and graduate students. Chapter 1 defines the collegiate function as an amalgam of the liberal arts curriculum and efforts to promote student transfer. Chapter 2 focuses on the liberal arts curriculum, pointing to patterns in enrollments and courses offered in the disciplines of science, social science, mathematics, humanities, composition, and fine and performing arts. Enrollment trends between 1975 and 1986 are analyzed for each discipline. Chapter 3 considers the scope of liberal arts-related activities in the noncredit area, outlining the difficulties in integrating continuing education offerings into the credit curriculum. The community college faculty's role in shaping the liberal arts curriculum is the topic of chapter 4, which draws on data from seven national studies to reveal trends in faculty characteristics. Chapter 5 introduces the transfer function as reflected in the intentions and behavior of students, and explores answers to questions concerning the number of students transferring, the number seeking to transfer, and the post-transfer experience. Chapter 6 presents data on the use of tests to screen entering students, and summarizes arguments for and against statewide uniformity in test administration. Services that support the liberal arts curriculum and student transfer, such as orientation, advising, remedial studies, and honors programs, are explored in chapter 7, while chapter 8 looks at examples of interinstitutional cooperation designed to promote student transfer.
