Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Crop Report as of April 1, 1939 Wheat: Farm stocks of all wheat on farms April 1 are estimated to be bushels compared with bushels a.ysar ago, and bushels the 10 - year (1928 - 37) average. The April 1 stocks were the largest since 1926, the earliest available record. The indicated disappearance of all wheat from farm stocks between January 1 and April 1 was bushels compared with bushels for the same period a year ago and bushels the 10 - year (1928-37) average. April 1 farm holdings of wheat by classes amounted to approximately bushels of hard red winter, bushels of soft red winter, bushels of hard red spring, bushels of white (both winter and spring), and bushels of durum. Corn stocks: April 1 stocks of corn on farms are estimated at bushels. Present stocks are the highest of any April 1 since 1926 when April 1 estimates of stocks were first made. These stocks exceed by 4 percent the previous high of bushels on April 1, 1933 and by over 60 percent the 10 - year (1928 - 37) average of bushels. The large stocks this year follow last year's above average April 1 stocks of bushels. For the Corn Belt as a Whole, Government loans reported to April 5 represent over 20 percent of the total April 1 farm stocks in that area. In a number of the Corn Belt States over one-fourth of the April 1 farm stocks are represented by Government loans. The disappearance of farm stocks from January 1 to April 1 this year amounted to bushels com pared with bushels for the same period in 1938 and bushels, the 10 - year (1928 - 37) average. In the 10 Southern States, the amp is slightly smaller than was indicated on May 1. Increases from the May 1 forecast in North Carolina, Florida, and Oklahoma were more than offset by decreases in Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. The June 1 forecast of bushels in these States is slightly larger than the 1938 crop of bushels and is 12 percent above the 10-year average produc tion of bushels. Indicated production is above average in all States of this group except North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Crop Report as of October 1, 1939 Fruit production is sufficient to give more than the usual per capita supply. The tonnage of deciduous fruits is expected to be about 15 percent above last season and equally above the lo - year (1928 - 37)average. Large crops of peaches, pears, apricots, cherries and commercial apples account for most of this increase. 'prospective production of citrus fruits for marketing from the fall of 1939 through the early spring months of 1940 is considerably above aver age, but not so large as the record production of last season. The supply of early and midseason oranges will be 5 percent smaller than last season, and grapefruit production will be 16 percent less than the 1938 - 39 crop. The total supply of dried fruits, including dried prunes, raisins, apricots, dried apples and dried peaches, probably will be above average. The total pack of canned fruits will be slightly larger than last year. Large crops of walnuts, almonds and filberts and nearly an average crop of pecans are in prospect. Supplies of fall vegetables for current consumption and winter storage appear adequate. The quantity of onions and snap beans is particularly large, while the tonnage of late crop cabbage is somewhat light. October reports also indicate expansion of the acreage of late fall and winter vegetables in the South. Reports for 10 early crops show an increase of 6 percent. Particularly large increases have been made for fall peppers and kale, and large increases are in prospect for fall and winter cabbage. Harvesting of southern cabbage, tomatoes, and other miscellaneous vegetables is expected to begin somewhat earlier than usual this fall. Taking all crops into consideration, aggregate production will be 1 or 2 percent above the average production during the 10 years before the drought of 1933, for good yields per acre more than offset the 7 percent reduction in acreage. Crop production, however, is quite unevenly distributed and the poor condition of western ranges and the lack of moisture in the Wheat Belt accen tuate the shortage of feed that is affecting part of the Great Plains Area and Portions of the Western States. In general, however, livestock numbers are relatively low in most of the drought area and the local shortages of feed are expected to result in rather close marketing, and in locally retarded expansion of flocks and herds rather than in extensive forced liquidation or reductions in livestock numbers.
