Book Effect of Wing Modifications on the Longitudinal Stability of a Tailless All wing Airplane Model

Download or read book Effect of Wing Modifications on the Longitudinal Stability of a Tailless All wing Airplane Model written by Charles L. Seacord and published by . This book was released on 1945 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: An investigation of the power-off longitudinal stability characteristics of a tailless all-wing airplane model with various wing modifications has been made in the Langley free-flight tunnel. Force and tuft tests were made on the model in the original condition, with the wing tips rotated for washout, with rectangular and swept-forward tips, and with various slat arrangements. Flight tests were made with the original wing and with the original wing equipped with the most promising modifications. The results indicated that changes in tip plan form or rotation of the wing tips did not appreciably reduce the instability at high lift coefficients. Addition of wing slats, however, improved the longitudinal stability at the stall when the slat extended far enough inboard to cover the area that tended to stall first.

Book An Interim Report on the Stability and Control of Tailless Airplanes

Download or read book An Interim Report on the Stability and Control of Tailless Airplanes written by Langley Stability Research Division and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problems relating to the stability and control of tailless airplanes are discussed in consideration of contemporary experience and practice. In the present state of the design of the tailless airplanes, it appears that sweepback affords a method of supplying tail length for directional and longitudinal stability and control, that the damping in pitching appears to have little effect on longitudinal behavior of the airplane provided the static margin is never permitted to become negative, that the influence of lateral resistance and the damping in yawing on the flying qualities is somewhat obscure, and that a reevaluation of the relative performance to be expected from tailless and conventional designs should be made.

Book An Introduction to the Longitudinal Static Stability of Low Speed Aircraft

Download or read book An Introduction to the Longitudinal Static Stability of Low Speed Aircraft written by F. G. Irving and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Series of Monographs in Aeronautics and Astronautics, Volume 5: An Introduction to the Longitudinal Static Stability of Low-Speed Aircraft covers the concepts and practical applications of longitudinal static stability and control to the design and flight testing of low-speed aircraft. This book is composed of 11 chapters, and begins with a brief overview of the concepts of static stability. The next chapters deal with the forces and moments acting on an aeroplane, particularly on the wings and tail, as well as their properties, which are expressed in mathematical terms. These topics are followed by discussions on conditions of static stability; general stability considerations; the influence of static stability on the pilot's action, and measure of static stability for flight tests. The final chapters review the maneuverability in pitch and the motion of tailplanes. This book will prove useful to undergraduate aeronautics students.

Book Notes on the Stability and Control of Tailless Airplanes

Download or read book Notes on the Stability and Control of Tailless Airplanes written by Robert Thomas Jones and published by . This book was released on 1941 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problems involved in the stability and control of tailless airplanes are discussed. Such factors as the location of the aerodynamic center and its effect on the longitudinal stability, longitudinal trim with high-lift devices, the effects of various changes in the shape of the wing on lateral stability, and the effects of nacelles are covered.

Book The Longitudinal Controls Fixed Static Stability of Tailless Aircraft

Download or read book The Longitudinal Controls Fixed Static Stability of Tailless Aircraft written by Cranfield Institute of Technology. College of Aeronautics and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes the development of a simple theory of the longitudinal controls fixed static stability of tailless aeroplanes. The classical theory, as developed for the conventional aircraft, is modified to accommodate the particular features of the tailless aeroplanes. The theory was then applied to a particular blended-wing-body tailless civil transport aircraft, BWB-98.

Book Compressibility Effects on the Longitudinal Stability and Control of a Pursuit type Airplane as Measured in Flight

Download or read book Compressibility Effects on the Longitudinal Stability and Control of a Pursuit type Airplane as Measured in Flight written by William N. Turner and published by . This book was released on 1945 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of the longitudinal stability and control of a pursuit-type airplane (the P-39N-1 airplane) were made in flight up to a Mach number of 0.78. The data are presented in the form of curves showing the variation, with center-of-gravity position, dynamic pressure, and Mach number, of the stick-fixed and stick-free stability, control, and balance of the airplane.

Book Some Data on the Static Longitudinal Stability and Control of Airplanes

Download or read book Some Data on the Static Longitudinal Stability and Control of Airplanes written by A. Martinov and published by . This book was released on 1940 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the solution of a number of problems on the stability and controllability of airplanes, there arises the necessity for knowing the characteristics of the tail surfaces of the types in common use today. Of those characteristics, the most important are the effectiveness and hinge moments of the tail surfaces. As has been shown in the present paper, there exists the possibility of determining these characteristics by the formulas obtained with a degree of accuracy sufficient for the purposes of preliminary computation. These formulas take into account a number of fundamental tail characteristics such as tail cut-outs on the control surface and the form of the control surface leading edge.
