Book General Comparative and Clinical Endocrinology of the Adrenal Cortex

Download or read book General Comparative and Clinical Endocrinology of the Adrenal Cortex written by I. Chester Jones and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General, Comparative and Clinical Endocrinology of the Adrenal Cortex, Volume 2 focuses on the many facets of adrenocortical form and function. This book discusses the mammalian adrenal cortex in structural, pathological, clinical, biochemical and histophysiological standpoints, including the functional and structural characteristics of the adrenocortical homologue of two poikilothermic groups- Reptilia and Amphibia. The general perspective that the adrenocortical homologue secretes materials that have an ubiquity of metabolism and mode of action in the Vertebrata is also elaborated. General, Comparative and Clinical Endocrinology of the Adrenal Cortex, Volume 2 covers the steroidogenesis in the zones of the mammalian adrenal cortex; adrenal gland in Reptilia; adrenal cortex of Amphibia; and aldosterone secretion and its clinical disorders. This volume is a good source for zoologists, biologists, and specialists interested in the endocrinology of the adrenal cortex.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adrenal Cortex presents a critical review of functional and structural zonation of the cortex. It discusses the regulation of adrenocortical function by control of growth and structure. It also addresses the adrenal cortex in the fetus and neonate. It demonstrates the cellular mechanisms involved in the acute and chronic actions of ACTH. Some of the topics covered in the book are the molecular structures of mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid receptors; description of adrenarche and adrenal hirsutism; types of congenital enzymatic defects of the adrenal; aetiology and management of Cushing’s syndrome; and the relationship between adrenal cortex and hypertension. The description and characteristics of adrenocortical dysfunction are fully covered. The interactions between the adrenal cortex and medulla are extensively discussed. An in-depth analysis of the pharmacokinetics of natural and synthetic glucocorticoids is provided. A study of the regulation of normal steroidogenesis by adrenocortical structure is well presented. A chapter is devoted to possible role of vascular system in neural stimulations. The book can provide useful information to neurologists, doctors, students, and researchers.

Book General and Comparative Endocrinology

Download or read book General and Comparative Endocrinology written by A.M. Schreiber and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-11-24 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General and Comparative Endocrinology: An Integrative Approach, takes a holistic approach to endocrinology, introducing students to the diverse facets of this interdisciplinary science ranging from the medical to comparative domains, while also exploring evolutionary, environmental, and conservation specializations within the field. The textbook is founded on the principle that students interested in the health sciences will benefit from understanding how proficiency in endocrine function among a diversity of organisms contributes to advances in modern medicine. Likewise, students intrigued by comparative physiology will benefit from the wealth of knowledge derived from medical/clinical endocrinology, the historical bedrock of the field. This textbook represents the modern field of endocrinology in its totality by addressing topics and recent advances not currently discussed in other introductory endocrinology textbooks. Key Features Introduces the broad and interdisciplinary scope of endocrinology. Provides clear chapter objectives and key concepts. Includes summary and synthesis questions for each chapter that are suitable for exams and quizzes. Includes a chapter devoted to endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Describes the roles played by the endocrine system in important health challenges related to appetite regulation, obesity, diabetes, and other diseases stemming from ‘mismatches to modernity’. Integrates evolutionary and comparative approaches to hormones and health.

Book Fundamentals of Comparative Vertebrate Endocrinology

Download or read book Fundamentals of Comparative Vertebrate Endocrinology written by I. Chester-Jones and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-14 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Endocrinology, as a discipline, was a late arrival in the corpus of established subjects. Its growth in recent years has been prodigious, extending from mor phology to molecular levels. Most of the major endocrine glands were noted by the early anatomists, although the adrenal glands were not described until 1563 by Bartholomaeus Eustachius (1520-1574). On the other hand, elucidation of the function of these glands was extremely slow. Key work by A. A. Berthold (1849), although overlooked at the time, showed that comb atrophy in castrated fowl was prevented by testis transplantation. The idea that glands produced substances reach ing the bloodstream directly and not via excretory ducts stemmed from Claude Bernard, who first used the term internal secretion in 1855. The clinical observa tions of Thomas Addison at Guy's Hospital-published as a monograph in 1855 entitled The Constitutional and Local Effects of Disease of the Suprarenal Capsules -were seminal. However, the stimulus of this early research did not bring imme diate widespread further investigations. Upon the discovery of secretin in 1902, Bayliss and Starling considered the term "internal secretion" to be clumsy, and the term "hormone" was coined (from OQ[!UW-1 excite or arouse) and it was first used by Starling in his Croonian of 1905.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 11 to 15 July 1977 about 60 physiologists, endo crinologists, ecologists and other biologists from 14 countries convened at the University Montpellier for a symposium on Environmental Endocrinology. This meet ing was organized as a Satellite Symposium of the 27th International Congress of Physiological Sciences, Paris, 18-23 July 1977. This volume is a record of the com munications presented at the symposium. The objectives of the program were to examine the role of the endocrine system in a wide spectrum of adjustments and adaptations to changes in environmental conditions by various spe cies of animals, including man, and to promote an ex change of ideas among investigators who have approached these functions from diverse aspects. The diversity of the information and ideas communicated is great. Of necessity, they represent only an extremely modest se lection of the many facets of endocrine function in the interaction of animals with their environments. Be yond the usefulness of the communications individually, we hope that they collectively demonstrate the substan tial heuristic value of the concept of environmental endocrinology as it was perceived by the participants. We acknowledge gratefully the kindness and sympathy of Professor Jaques ROUZAUD, President of the University of Montpellier II, for his generous extension of the hospitality of the University to the Symposium. We are most grateful to Mrs. Monique VIEU who effected so well the secretarial organization of the Sympos.
